I had an old Bush Hog brand finish mower that I inherited from the previous owner of my property. It never worked well. It often dug into the ground and bent the casters, having to replace several over the years which is expensive. This video made me realize the previous owner had the swivel bracket setup backwards where there was no swiveling happening at all. I took it apart and assembled it correctly and now that finish mower works like a dream, hugging the ground perfectly and not digging in. Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

I made the mistake of lending my tractor & brush hog to a neighbor while I was away for a while. When I returned, the two arms from the pivot point to the top of the brush hog were bent and I couldn't figure out how he did it. He did a 'cleanup & lube' to be a nice neighbor and evidently put it back together wrong. Now I know. The arms weren't hard to straighten again and he did do a nice job at cleaning it up.

I just ordered the Kit. Thank You. I am new to Rotary Cutters and tractors in general. I purchased a very well made and in outstanding condition Rotary Cutter only to discover two things: 1.) It is very old and the company is out of business ("Servis") so I can not get parts, and 2.) The 45 degree straps are bent exactly as you said they could be about half way down from the top link connection point. There is no pivot point on those straps and no pivot bracket where the top link connects. I have not used the RC yet but have checked everything on it and it appears excellent except for no pivot point. You most likely saved me from really messing up my RC or my new to me Ford Jubilee. Thank you.

Great video! I have that horseshoe bracket on my tractor and I honestly thought it was just something that was added by a previous owner for who knows what reason! lol! Of course it is also backwards. So that will be corrected as well. Question though, for quick hitch setups, would that be why you see some brush hogs that use chains to attach the top of the 3pt to the back of the cutter, to make up for the lack of the horseshoe backet and still allow the cutter to pivot?

I've never seen anyone use a top link with a brush hog. We always use a short chain as a top link so you can still pick it up if needed but the chain allows it to follow the contours of the land and won't bend the brush hog if you cross a ditch or terrace wrong
@PineyGroveHomestead
@PineyGroveHomestead 10 ай бұрын
That's why it has that pivot point. I think most people use top links.
@chaseledbetter5186
@chaseledbetter5186 10 ай бұрын
@PineyGroveHomestead but they won't pivot enough if you cross too much angle. Of the 8 or 10 people I know locally, none use a top link. We live in the foothills of NC so nothing is flat here so maybe that's why. I use a chain so I can still lift it but most people around here use nothing for a top link. they pick it up by the lower arms and let the rear wheel roll. I've seen several brush hogs on you tube bent and beat to death from using a top link but not around here. Most old timers would never use a top link on a brush hog unless it's chain

@chaseledbetter5186
@chaseledbetter5186 7 ай бұрын
@joerapo yeah agree. That 6 or 8 inches of pivot with a top link isn't enough. Plus that's a newer thing. Old bush hogs didn't have a pivot point. Anyone who tries a chain never goes back to a solid link that I've heard of. I guess if your land is completely flat you could get by but there's no advantage. You can still pick it up all the way with a chain it just lets the rear flow up and down as much as needed

Those first 2 brush hogs are virtually identical to a Chinese one I have just purchased in NZ. I consider the way rear wheel is attached to body is a design flaw. It should run on an independant mounting bolt to make height change easier.

I use chain, also, but not for the top link. I replaced the "45-degree brackets" with lengths of chain. They max out to lift the attachment, but flex when, say, backing into a hill. We have very uneven ground in New England.

I don't currently own a brush hog but I've used many in the past when did farm work every summer for over 10 years. None of the ones I used in the past included that pivot. Also puzzling me is the fact that my tractor's 3-point hitch doesn't produce any down force and will easily raise upwards if my 3-point implement gets pushed upwards by something. I can see that pivot allowing a brush hog to change its angle with the ground though. That might be useful if you want the reward wheel end to be able to independently raise upwards. Without that pivot, pushing upwards on the wheel would raise the entire brush hog. On the other hand, the brush hogs I've used only had a single wheel so allowing just the rear wheel end to independently raise would allow the front of the brush hog to potentially hit the ground more often. Are you certain all brush hogs, even low priced discount models are supposed to include that piece and related pivot? BTW I have a hydraulic offset flail mower that I find works very well for us.

Shouldn't a 3point hitch float and absorb this kind of motion or is this just a concern for additional float beyond the normal travel of the 3pt hitch? I know my 3pt hitch "floats" down and hydraulically lifts. I can go behind the tractor and completely lift an (extremely small...) implement to the top of my 3point hitch's range and then it just floats back down to my set point. It's one of the reasons you can't "force" something like a plugger or a tiller to a certain depth and either have to add weight or just wait for it to scratch enough to get down to the point where you've set your 3pt. I do think some of the more industrial "big ag" tractors do have some ability to hydraulically press implements down to certain heights, but I'm not aware of any compacts or subcompacts that have the ability to do this. They all float down to a set point. Admittedly, you are a bit more aggressive with that brushhog at the end of the video than I ever am. lol. What am I missing?
@PineyGroveHomestead
@PineyGroveHomestead Ай бұрын
A brush hog has to pivot or it will stress out the tailwheel over uneven ground. If you rely on the tailwheel to pick up the whole implement plus the tractor arms from the back it will break the tailwheel off!
