lol people in the comments leaving silly comments when it's obvious they've never had a bird. If the bird didn't like it, you would KNOW. My cockatiel at the vet screams and flails bloody murder about being harmlessly wrapped in a towel, no bird will sit there and contentedly be preened, with eyes closed and festhers fluffed, if it's in what is apparently extreme pain, according to some of these people :p

That’s why you shouldn’t do it that way…. 😢 Scritches are absolutely good & fine. Why risk your bird and why potentially pull him like that when he doesn’t have much choice about it? 😢😢😢 This is why many of us have never seen anyone preen a parrot like this - the danger is HEAVY. This is risk-assessment. It’s why people just scratch their budgies to help them, not use tools that can put an eye out 😊
@alohaXamanda
@alohaXamanda Жыл бұрын
@@catsberry4858 He doesn't have another bird to help get the pin feathers on his head so I try to use my fingers to preen them. Gentle scritches don't get rid of pin feathers and can actually hurt the ones that aren't ready due to the back and forth movement. It's better to try to get the sheathe off gently with fingers to mimic another bird co-preening
@a-bird-lover
@a-bird-lover Жыл бұрын
also pulling feathers isn't dangerous, and in some cases is medically necessary! It happens on accident fairly commonly, and once the feather leaves the skin, the skin closes around the area and no pain is felt (a bit like ripping off a band-aid, the actual process might hurt, and if you're doing it on purpose it's best to do it as fast as possible, but it doesn't hurt at all after). It's uncomfortable and best avoided, but it happens and isn't a major issue or medical issue at all. It's a good idea to know how to do that though as a parrot owner, because if blood feathers break you have to pull them or the bird could die of blood loss!

Yes, you are correct! I am taking the dead part off. Pinfeathers grow where the top is the oldest, and if you look closely, I am not touching the developing blood part, only the dead part.

The one you keep going back to before you pulled the one out is a blood feather, they are deeply painful for birds, please do research before preening your birds so you know what to look for and what you need to do when you come across a blood feather…. Also the tweezers you are using are way to big you need needle nose tweezers and not pulling so hard that obviously your your bird is bleeding on the skin.. this is so scary to watch!
@pinfeathersgalore
@pinfeathersgalore Жыл бұрын
Yes, thank you, I am aware it's a blood feather. I have an educational video regarding pinfeathers right here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i36TZGN6r7qKqMU In this video, I am taking the cap off! I have worked in wildlife aves rehabilitation for the last decade years and am in the medical field for the two decades, and have lots of experience with pin/blood feathers :) it is my field of interest. My birds are free to go whenever they like, as well if it gets too much for them. They are flighted and not clipped. I used blunt tweezers in this video to show people the variety of tweezers I have.

You don't have enough patience doing this, and you're bothering your poor bird. And I think that kind of tweezers is not suitable, they should be smooth. A suggestion, buy a fake bird and rehearse a little this procedure, and when you control it perfectly, you can make it to your real bird, and record and public it. I’m sorry but the video is not relaxing, on the contrary rather. I got nervous seeing how upset the bird was.
