Picked up the Cleveland chipper a couple of weeks ago and it is already my favorite Club in the bag. I am absolutely deadly with this thing

I have both in my bag. I use the Cleveland when I’m on the fringe of the green or in thick rough. I use the Ping when I’m 15-20 yards or farther. Like another commenter on here said, the Ping ChipR does tend to run out a bit.

Great video. I tried both of these and I have to agree that the Cleveland is much more playable due to the extra loft and shorter shaft especially on those delicate chips and pitches.
@LukeHanlonGolf Жыл бұрын
Definitely built to serve its purpose more I would say. And it seems to be the more popular option for those who have tried the two but as usual they’ll stay under the radar for most compared to the ping 🫣

I play off 4 and have put the Cleveland in my bag for the winter season here in Melbourne Australia as it is almost unbeatable from the very soft ground conditions. Also I find it’s surprisingly good from out to about 110 metres. I have taken my 50 gap wedge out and am yet to miss the wedge. I intend to swap them back over for summer but couldn’t be happier now

@@Cyrus92178 just the chipper so I think it’s around 37-38 degrees

The Ping ChipR is in my bag now. Needed to get used to it a bit - first chips ran way too long... Got adjusted in the meantime and now it is more than reliable.

Thanks for this review. I actually own an older Cleveland Smart sole chipper that I have had for a number of years now. Its been very very good but I wondered how it might stack up against the new Ping model. I didn't realize the Cleveland is shorter than the Ping. Difference in control counts. Watching this gives me an idea. They both look good but I think the Cleveland is a good fit for me. I also keep a 37 degree Adams chipper that I have had for years. I will use each one in different situations and I have a good deal of success with them.

Hi Joseph thanks for the feedback. We don’t actually stock Cleveland apart from the wedges where I work so when I got the chipper I was actually really impressed with the overall club. I think they’re both really nice clubs and just go a different way about the deigns of them. I like that idea of having 2 different lofted chippers, you should never not be getting up and down with both of them haha
@dickbroomer78772 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph read your reply 👍, you have more experience with chipper’s than me, I bought a ChipR (2 weeks ago) It’s a brilliant club great 👍 design and performs well for me,got it tweeted added (2.5deg) loft now perfect, with a graphite shaft it’s great around the Greens & from 100yds, with a penetrating high flight with spin, recommend you try one out, let me know how it goes, Dickey 9hcp 75year Senior Golfer (good luck)

Thanks I will give them a look. I like graphite shafts. Most of my clubs are Ping . Love their stuff.

I'm playing the Cleveland Smart Sole 4 chipper. I love it. Easy to play. Never duffed or miss hit it. The head design gives me a lot of confidence. That said, the Ping looks better in the bag... more like a traditional wedge than a chipper. Having never used the Ping, I can't say if its better or worse; but, given my experience with the Cleveland, I find it hard to believe there is a clearly better chipper out there.
@LukeHanlonGolf2 жыл бұрын
I agree the ping looks better in the bag but at the end of the day do you want something that looks good in the bag or something that is going to help your game and work better for chipping 😄
@chevy4x466 Жыл бұрын
While I am a sucker for nice looking clubs. I want a chipper that can get though a small bit of a lye in the rough. Seems like the couple extra degrees could be helpful
@alancunliffe19302 жыл бұрын
Good review but you didn't mention that the ping chipper can be ordered to suit your requirements rather than a standard model off the shelf. So for example you can order it as graphite or steel shafts, change the shaft length etc. You can also get a full fitting from Ping.
@TAYLORFAN502 жыл бұрын
It's not rocket science, it's a f'ing chipper! The only shaft you need to address is not getting shafted by paying for excesd b.s. that you don't need. 🙄

Smartsole 4 G, S, and C in my bag. Who cares what chipper you use as an amateur, as long as you are using a chipper.
Liked most of your review and also like the Cleveland, but you made me smile when you compare chipping around the green, maybe a bit of player error there as well mate? hahaha

Get fit for the ping…. I play ping irons and ordered custom CHIP-R…. According to color code and fits perfect in the set…Try using them more like a putter than a wedge… your hands lean way too Forward…Practice chipping at landing spots first …. So easy to use … but again try a putting stroke

I just bought the Cleveland. Years ago I had a old cheap two way chipper that I loved, but when I got shiny new irons, I retired the old chipper. But after I kept finding myself in situations where I missed the chipper, I saw the Cleveland and knew I needed it 😄

I love my Ping ChipR. All my golfing buddies make fun of me for using it...but I have the last laugh when I actually chip onto the green and they duff or blade their 60 degree wedges. lol.

I own both and find the Cleveland much easier to use because of the loft.

@@LukeHanlonGolf I tried the Ping, ran through the green. The Cleveland had more loft and was easier for me to chip with.

I play the smart sole C 4 and it’s permanently in the bag. I also bought the ChipR but found the Cleveland More accurate and friendlier to use. Unfortunate as I’m a ping fan. So far I’m getting up and down 42% with the Cleveland. I hope Ping decides to offer more lofts in the ChipR down the road.

I think the ones which look like a putter will be better than these as these will cause the same feel as an iron which many struggle with fats and thins. Odyssey X act for example.
@LukeHanlonGolf2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that was my thoughts as well to be honest.. the Cleveland isn’t too bad for it like it has a completely different feel to it around the green
@golfrichardvc2 жыл бұрын
I am actually quite a decent chipper but I play on a fast downland course where you are often left with some awkward chips because of the run offs. I've got a Cleveland SS4 and the actual benefit of it is the lack of thought needed before you hit it. You pull the club out and all you need to do is determine how hard you hit it. It gets through the grass with no problems because of the sole and gives it just enough loft to get it up and running. Proof that it's working for me is that I've dropped my handicap nearly three shots and am now comfortably inside single figures. All those who took the mickey out of me are now looking at these clubs very differently.

I love Cleveland's full face wedges and found a used Smart Sole for $30. Couldn't pass that up. Not for me, though. It's in the backup back for my newb buddies.

To be honest, I don't think you really understood how to use these clubs, you were putting shaft lean on them and swinging like a lob wedge, they are designed to be used just like a putter.

As others have mentioned, these clubs are designed to be used with a putter grip and stroke, not swung like a wedge as done here. In addition, no mention is made of the sound and feel, which are both very important. The Ping is noticably softer feeling and sounding than the Cleveland. The Ping also looks like a normal iron in the bag, while the Cleveland is just plain goofy. But to each their own.
