Great questions. The best place for in depth conversations is on our website under the ask the coach section. There we are not limited by the length of the comment box. If you post a question about this there Alois will answer it for you. The shoulder rotations are an important part of the stroke when you are trying to generate more power as to are the legs, the arm and even the wrist. All of this will help you get the bat moving through faster.
@pingskills

It's all about the brushing action. Against backspin your stroke can be more vertical. Make a fine brushing contact and as it is a fine contact you can move your bat through quite fast. You can also ask questions on our website under the ask the coach section. There we have a lot more room to answer your questions.

The topspin is an extension of the counterhit. You put more topspin on the ball which causes the ball to dip and allows you to hit the ball harder and still get it on the table.
@pingskills
@pingskills 12 жыл бұрын
Are you getting a good brushing action on the ball? What sort of bat are you using? Can it generate plenty of spin?
@pingskills
@pingskills 12 жыл бұрын
Correct. A loop is a shot with lots of topspin that causes the ball to dip. It is also refered to as a topspin stroke.

Thanks, I've been told shoulder rotation movements are quite slow to recoil (compared to elbow rotation), are they promoted in this vid because the block is a rather slow ball ? I guess we wouldnt have time to make a full elbow swing against a more agressive couter ball,would we ?
@pingskills
@pingskills 12 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily starting at 90/90. This is the finish position. Some players like to start with the arm quite straight and others prefer it more bent. Find what feels comfortable for you.

Seems you do this stroke without using the swing of your arm, but instead you use shoulder/body rotation? I make more use of the swing of my arm rather than shoulder rotation, Should I change that? Does it make me more consistent if i go for shoulder body rotation rather than arm rotation?

I'm just curious Pingskills regarding the finishing position of the loop and forehand topspin. At the end of the stroke does the bat angle have to be at the side of your head or tilted at your head?
@pingskills
@pingskills 10 жыл бұрын
Hi James Tse, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the question. You want to keep the bat angle consistent throughout the entire stroke. See if you can watch the video again and see the finish position and see if it answers your question. If I haven't answered your question then please let me know and I'll try again.

Hey alois please help me every coach or video i referred told me that your hand needs to be relaxed and straight and you close the forearm to generate the spin but jeff's hand always remain at 90 degrees. also i noticed that even your hands are mostly straight while hitting a topspin. since i have been following your site my action is quite similar to jeff which my coaches say is not right. what do i do now?

Coach Jeff my top spins always have a side spin on them even though I have a flat bat contact and don't tilt the bat how to create pure topspin?I like your coaching a lot
@pingskills
@pingskills 6 жыл бұрын
A little sidespin is not a bad thing but if you want pure topspin it really comes down to the bat angle when you contact the ball.
@anahuic
@anahuic 7 жыл бұрын
Your demos show your balls all bouncing to Jeff at the same height. So he starts with the bat between knee and hip height and ends the stroke with the bat just above head height. If the ball bounces a foot or more higher the stroke clearly has to start from a higher position. But does it still end at the same height as before? I'm having trouble with the high bouncers.
@pingskills
@pingskills 7 жыл бұрын
Yes ideally you'd still finish at the same position. If the ball is higher you can angle your bat downwards a little more and you can also move the bat further forward but the finish height should still be around the same. If the ball gets really high then you can use the forehand smash so take a look at our video on that stroke too. Good luck!

hi Coach Alois. I noticed that you don't mention anything about using your wrist on a forehand loop. I have always used my wrist when I do a forehand loop. However my loops have always been spinny but slower. I recently stopped using too much wrist and found that my shots are faster. I'm also able to make more kill shots. What's your opinion on using the wrist on the forehand loop?
@pingskills
@pingskills 9 жыл бұрын
+muntecy Good question. I don't think that the wrist should be too much of a focus to start with. It's much easier to be consistent without too much use of the wrist. In our video on the advanced forehand topspin we discuss this a bit more. You can find this on the PingSkills website under Table Tennis Lessons -> Strokes & Techniques. Once you develop your topspin you can use a little bit of wrist but it's not as critical as it is for the backhand. We recommend just relaxing it and letting it come through naturally. Anyway watch the advanced forehand topspin video and let me know if it helps.

Hi, I'm just wondering what is the different between topspin and drive?
@pingskills
@pingskills 8 жыл бұрын
We don't use the term drive much here in Australia. I think the drive is closer to what we call a counterhit with less topspin than the shot we call a topspin. Don't worry too much about the terminlogy. It's useful to think of all of these topspin based strokes just as extensions of each other.

what should be the angle of the racket?
@pingskills
@pingskills 8 жыл бұрын
It really depends on a lot of factors. So rather than worrying about the exact angle. Get out on the table and experiment. If your opponent has a lot of topspin, you need to close the angle more. It also depends on how you contact the ball. If you get a really good brushing contact and come forward with a lot of speed, you can also close the angle some more. As we demonstrate in the video, start with a fairly flat bat, and then start to close the angle and then move your stroke more forward. Good luck!

dear pingskill, i have a question, if i want to topspin, it always become sidespin. is it okay or should i changed my techniques?
@pingskills
@pingskills 6 жыл бұрын
It is OK, but you should try and work on being able to hit a pure topspin as well. If you always get sidespin it just means that your bat is angled to the side when you hit the ball so to get pure topspin make sure the bat is parallel to the ground when you make contact with the ball.

Do I lock my wrist when I do this?
@pingskills
@pingskills 10 жыл бұрын
Hi ItsCrystal, You don't lock your wrist, just keep it fairly relaxed and you'll naturally get some movement which can help your stroke. When you are learning the stroke though don't focus on the wrist, instead really concentrate on getting the start and finish positions correct.

I always favour my backhand block over my forehand which allows my opponent to go on the attack and get the point most of the time. How do I stop doing that and actually play my forehand more?
@pingskills
@pingskills 10 жыл бұрын
Hi vijay sekar, It really comes down to practice. See if you can get a training partner to loop the ball to your forehand over and over. The more you practice it the more comfortable you will be with it. This is to practice the block which you mentioned in your comments. For an attacking stroke, like we show in the video, you can loop the ball and have your partner block it back to you.

Do I need to lock my entire arm to do this stroke right?
@pingskills
@pingskills 9 жыл бұрын
DarrenmiDinyin93 No you don't need to. Some players prefer using the full arm and some like to have the elbow a bit more bent when starting the stroke. The key is to focus on the start and finish positions. If you get these right then everything else will fall in place.

@pingskills
@pingskills 9 жыл бұрын
+Rajavardhan Vadla I'd advise that you pick on hand and stick with it. If you want to play left handed then play like that all the time. I think it will help your development. If you are playing left handed then starting with more weight on you left leg is good, and then you can transfer it to the right as you play the stroke.

The forehand topspin adds more topspin to the ball and is a more attacking stroke. You can think of it as an extension of the counterhit. Don't get too caught up in the names of all the strokes, as long as you are improving your technique that is the main thing.

@pingskills
@pingskills 10 жыл бұрын
Hi DaJaguar, you can certainly extend your arm more. Some players like to keep the stroke a bit shorter as they feel it gives them more control and with the speed of the rackets and by using the twisting motion, your legs, wrist, you can still generate a lot of power. People tend to categorise these two styles as the Chinese loop (bigger arm motion) and the European loop (smaller arm motion).
