2018 Remix blu-ray from a couple of years ago compared with the brand new blu-ray. Only difference (other than artwork)? A new Atmos mix!
Does that make a purchase worth it?

I have been listening to this album since 1977. I own the 5.1 mix and now the Atmos mix. Maybe it’s my imagination, but the Atmos mix has more detail. I’ve heard things that I’ve never heard before, rhythms, the bass, everything I’ve never heard before, plus the synths floating overhead. I like the new mix but I’ve been a Floyd fan since 1970. I could be fooling myself, either way I enjoy it and I would highly recommend the Atmos disc..

Agreed! I have listened to Animals countless times over the years only being disappointed by the sound quality. The remixed version changed everything. I finally got to listen to Animals the way I always hoped for. This was the most important release from Pink Floyd in probably decades.

Great description, Mike. And I'm guessing the new Atmos version ALSO left out the rare 8-track version of POTW pts 1 & 2, where it was bridged together as one song, with a guitar solo by Snowy White? Two missed opportunities. BRING ON THE WALL!

Yes, I totally agree… the atmos takes it up to the next level and beyond and since this is one of my all time favourite albums that’s a total gift and a dream come true❤

Thanks for yet another great review. I had the 5.1 but recently sold it in anticipation of the ATMOS mix. I've yet to order it but will be shortly. Personally feel they should have worked on releasing ATMOS versions of WYWH and The Wall before revisiting this as it does come across as a cash grab. All of us having purchased the 2018 mix in the last couple of years now having to decide if we want to spend again on the ATMOS mix. Very poor optics and unfair on us the fans. Keep up the good work 😊

Really great video, I appreciate the detailed description of the different sonic qualities of the 1977/2018 mixes as well as the differences between the 5.1 & Atmos mix. I also agree with you that a drier mix doesn’t equal a better mix & I’m all for a remaster that sounds different than the original as long as that difference could be considered an upgrade & doesn’t just mean “brick-walled”.

Thanks Mike for the great as usually review.Your opinion always matters to me,so despite of having the 5.1 BD ,I've just ordered this new Atmos release after your comments.I have 5.2.4 Atmos setup and after listening this new version on the Apple, I'll be enjoying real physical source of this classic album.

I appreciate all the PINK FLOYD surround mixes and have purchased all of the various mixes that are created and I am waiting for a OBSCURED BY CLOUDS and MEDDLE complete album mixes but I am not getting my hopes up too high.

Agree with pretty much everything said here. For the stereo mixes, it reminds me of when Brendan O'Brien remixed Pearl Jam's "Ten". The original is a classic drenched in reverb and the remix pretty much removes that and offers more clarity to the listener.

Nothing finer than firing up a pink floyd album on SACD with a good cup of joe and a doobie first thing in the morning! As much as i like listening to the animals sacd im still partial to wish you were here or dark side of the moon.

The Atmos disc is better than the great 5.1 disc on my 7.2.4 system Animals is my favorite PF album

Thanks Mike as always! Following your channel may be expensive, but you learn a lot about new stuff! This album was unknown to me and it was ordered as soon as I had seen the video. I bought (of course) the last Animals, but without the Atmos track. And after all, I have a 9.2.4 system here (With all speakers from the Arendal 1723 series except my two subs witch are SVS PB16 Ultra and SVS SB-4000) and will love to test the last of my many Animal records! 🙂 LOVE your channel! Keep it up and thank you!

Great video, I just received my copy of the atmos mix, I have the big box set and the new SACD too, can’t have enough. Lol. I hope one day that they release some good quality live content from this period and the 77 in the flesh tour. And they need to finally release a Blu Ray 5.1 surround mix of The Wall. I really wonder why that hasn’t been given this treatment yet.

It’s more like a 4.1 mix. With both the SACD and Apple Music multi channel mixes, there is very little audio in the center channel. I noticed prior to the Blu-ray announcement, the Atmos tag showed up on the Apple Music version, but was still stereo. It was available on release day. It sounds amazing in my new Beats Studio Pro headphones

Just the remix version alone was worth getting. This was the album that convinced to really get into Pink Floyd decades ago but I always felt the sound quality was greatly lacking. The remix version changed all that. To have a great sounding version of Animals was a huge deal for me as a fan of the album.

Thank you for this review. You mentionned the 5.1 Atmos fold down is not worth it over the previous 5.1 mix but it also sounds like you didn't test or compare the two versions before offering that opinion. I only bring this up because there are many cases where the 5.1 Atmos fold down sounds better than the 5.1 mix on 5.1 systems, case in point Rush Signals 40th Anniversary Edition (it was your video of it that convinced me that the Atmos fold down was worth it over the 30th Anniversary Edition in 5.1 and on my 5.1 system it certainly is!) The Atmos mix is a different mix and the 5.1 fold down of it can be a better and worthwhile option for those with 5.1 systems.

Don't have an Atmos system or either Blu-ray. But I do have the 5.1 SACD of Animals which sounds great. I only have a couple of Atmos Blu-rays that were not available with a 5.1 mix. Not sure I am sold on playing an Atmos mix through a standard 5.1 system. Eric Clapton 24 Nights Blu-ray has either an Atmos mix or a 2 channel LPCM mix. To my ears the 2 channel mix played through Dolby Pro Logic II sounds better. The Atmos 7.1 mix is at a much lower volume. Have to crank it up. Not sure why.

yeah the difference between 1977 and 2018 is HUGE. the only complaint I have is the prayer in "Sheep" was re-recorded and completely different. it's kind of jarring.

PF is preparing us to expend around $300 for WYWH box set like DSOTM $300 box set just to get the Atmos version. What every PF want is The Wall in surround, no matter if it's 5.1 or atmos.

LOL I love how you said approach the 2018 mix with an open mind. 1977 is superior IMO. Maybe Steven Wilson can do a better job?

The 2018 5.1 was such a leap forward from the 77 for me the 77 belongs in the trash. It always was thin, compressed, flat and apart from being a brilliant LP was too dull sounding for extended play. The 2018 5.1 changed my life; there was a time when I played it for a year each night before bed. I admit to having the finest sounding system outside Abby road or Olympic studios that I've every heard and the '18 mc mix just lends itself superbly to quality hifi. Daves telecaster blows me away as does the vocals, bass and keys and drums that come galloping through. TO my, Animals is the definitive PF album; like it is the centre of the PF universe and every other record before and after spokes out from Animals

I have the 1992 Remaster CD and the 2018 Remix Blu-ray. It's not my favorite Pink Floyd album, not even in my top 3, so I'm not going to get the new Blu-ray.
