First for me would be "Wish You Were Here ".. then "Animal's." There BOTH extraordinary even for the Floyd. To come back with such strong intentions after 'Dark Side of the Moon" is No small feat!!!! They were definitely in their peak years at this time ( if you ask me..) And this Gem is Gilmore's BEST Guitar work period! Again..My Opinion! Thank You, Carry On!?! 😉

I grew up with my family's poor to mediocre taste in music. One day, I was 15/16 years old, I was unbelievably lucky, because the gods of music took pity on me when I found an abandoned cassette on a wall(!) which I took home with me (the cassette, not the wall). On the one hand, there was Deep Purple with such popular pieces like "Smoke on the Water" or "Child in Time", and on the other side, "Animals" by Pink Floyd. I thought Deep Purple was great, that was already a big leap, Pink Floyd I found very strange and I didn't know at first what to make of it. But I listened to the cassette over and over again for a fortnight, both sides one after the other. And then, without me realising it my perception changed. And after those two weeks, I only listened to Deep Purple very rarely, but Pink Floyd became a significant benchmark in music for me, because double happiness, right after "Animals", I discovered "Dark Side of the Moon". Looking back, I would almost say, but only almost, I never learned more about music than I did in those two weeks, and I don't want to know what a poor person I would have become if that hadn't happened to me.

Mr Phil. Love the story. I'd say my family was completely opposites. I was a Johnny come lately, and with 4 older brothers . The one up from me was 8 years my senior and the oldest was 16 years my senior. The oldest was at the real Woodstock. The one down from him was burning draft cards in 71 on the DC lawn. So needless to say the hand me down albums I acquired were the best anyone could put their hands on. As I grew older people older than I was amazed at my music collection and the knowledge of those albums that came from hours on end listening to these legendary musicians. Zeppelin, Floyd, and Sabbath always stood out for me, but the early stuff from the protest movement really had a place in my heart. But I'm glad you discovered Purple Floyd, and thank God it wasn't ABBA.

I was 8 when this came out and with 4 older brothers this was playing in the house outside in the yard and in the car. If there was and album I could credit to myself this would be it. The whole thing is a masterpiece. Sad how egos create that inter turmoil within that develops into hatred. And with anyone it's most likely over the smallest and dumbest of things like money. You can always make more.

I wonder how many Americans (understandably) misunderstood what _"Hey you, Whitehouse"_ was referring to? It's actually referring to Mary Whitehouse, a very well known and somewhat pompous clean-up campaigner famous in Britain for trying to keep swearing and nudity out of the media, hence the lyrics _"Mary, you're nearly a treat"_ and _"You're trying to keep our feelings off the street"._ She was loved by half the country and mocked and hated by the other half.
@christophercoles4401
@christophercoles4401 Жыл бұрын
@@TonyEnglandUK I actually was aware because a review of Animals cleared it up. Mary Whitehouse sounds like a Brit version of Anita Bryant , a former Miss America , who led an anti-Gay movement in the '70s and early '80s. Before that the only thing she was known for was Tropicana orange juice commercials.

@@patgalvez4563 Roger stained the whole brand Momentary Lapse was a good album, but Division Bell (from what I’ve heard from it ) was not very inspired. Gilmour’s solo albums (and Roger’s) are better than that album I guess they patched it up in 2005, but losing Wright before any solid regrouping (IF there was to be any?) is a “moot point” , now. It’s NOT Pink Floyd without Wright , IMO - like so many other bands that try to forge ahead after a key member passes - it’s just never the same

It pisses me off that FM radio only plays Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall and Wish You Were Here. No Animals, Atom Heart Mother, Ummagumma, etc etc.....I stopped listening to the radio 30 years ago at the age of 14 in 1992 as that was around the time American popular music had the last shovel of dirt tossed on it's coffin. There's still great American music but you gotta be willing to go on an often fruitless search. Imagine being in your car between 1961 to 1981 and turning the radio on, what wonderful sounds you'd hear! "Pop Music" in 2022 is such absolute garbage and the thought of being stuck in an elevator and having to listen to it for hours is like a waking nightmare for me! Remember that "pop" is just an abbreviation for "popular" which means "pop" music in the 60's and 70's was fu*king awesome! The Beatles, The Who, Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gay, Journey, Neil Young, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Yes, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, and if course the king of pop, Michael Jackson. I know that when people hear "pop" they expect up beat dance music but that's just kinda what it morphed into over time, specifically the 1980's. A band can simultaneously be in 2 genres at the same time i.e "rock" & "pop". (Ok, it's time to rant!) Good God we have lost so much in America due to an ever eroding educational system and ignorant polar extremists in both culture and politics which, let's face it, are almost indistinguishable from one another in 2022. Long live rock, funk, motown, folk, progressive and real "country" music. Hurry up and die reality TV and it's musical counterparts, Evangelical Christian fascists, Q-Anon idiots, all far Left & Right uneducated & wilfully ignorant politicians and their voters, violent hate groups of both liberals & conservatives & all autocratic power hungry billionaires, who are the ACTUAL enemy of the American people. Love your neighbor for the quality of their hearts and minds.......not their religious & political beliefs. There are so many other good reasons to hate someone! I think religion is totally stupid yet I have good friends who are religious but they know not to try to convert me & I'd never dream of telling them that their beliefs are stupid. The same goes for double for politics! Sadly there aren't enough good people left to reject or eject a GOOD person over religion and politics. But I'll 86 a BAD person if they're a religious bigot in a heartbeat and never give them a 2nd thought. As for thoughts, here's my final one on the matter..... THE GREEDY RICH & THOSE WHO LUST FOR POWER ARE THE ENEMY, NOT YOUR NEIGHBOR!

Made this 46yo tear up. Where are people like you? Where have all the cowboys gone? I'm guessing you like Dwight Eisenhower and the heroes who stand against the military-industrial complex as well... Keep up the good fight, Aramis, you've got allies ✊

@@mrinvader I'm just a guy trying to stay away from the Twitter idiots and the M.A.G.A. Morons while trying to stay 2 feet ahead of the fu*king wolves. Sadly it's the American military industrial complex that's keeping our collectively undereducated asses alive! Without our military and advanced weaponry we'd all be dead or colonized by China!

@@aramisloe6842 read eisenhowers farewell address to see what i meant... A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction... This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence-economic, political, even spiritual-is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together. [emphasis added]

@@mrinvader To say that there's a dichotomy at play in the American citizenry would be the understatement of the century. (I'm not saying you said this) We are living in such a chaotic meat grinder of a society and yet half of the country mocks the socialism of our Western European allies, while not even know the definition of what socialism is. They declare it to be evil Communism to the likes of Joseph Stalin or Fidel Castro yet nothing could be further from the truth. Without the ability to think cognitively which is of paramount importance. Again, thank God for our big powerful weapons of war that keep our dumb asses safe!

Saw them in the checkerdome in st. Louis, the year I graduated 1985, maybe 1988, don't remember. Rodger was not with them unfortunately. Sat on the floor, row 31, middle row, they had speakers in all 4 corner's. Before the show I kept hearing birds chirping, singing etc. I was thinking I was the only one that heard it. I asked the people I was with if they heard birds chirping. They said they heard it too, but they were thinking they were to high and didn't say anything. Surround sound had us believing we were hearing things, which we were. Greatest show I will ever see.

Mike Gore. It would have been 88 , I had 12 tickets to the show in Cleveland. I'll try to keep it short. What I remember was tickets went on sale like 6 months before hand. And for the younger crowd, this is back when you had to stand in line for hours sometimes days to vet tickets. I got there around midnight knowing tickets didn't go on sale until 8am. There were about 30 points front of me and this is 6 months before an open air stadium summer concert in Cleveland. So it's cold as fuck. I had my friends money also to get 12 but 3 of us were definitely going together. FF to that summer and the date is getting near. But my brother got me a kick ass job at a factory working 2nd shift making $8.56 per hour. This is when minimum wage was $3.35 and if you had a job getting $5.00 per hour, you had a good job. It was a Union job and my probation period was 90 days and of course my dumb luck was my 91 day was the night of the show. Didn't know what to do, and was told Nottoway take my 1st day off, I did anyways and was fired. But that show was awesome. I ate 3 hits of some good blotter and we took the train downtown to the stadium. But I remember those sounds coming from behind me above me and below me. They were sound checking still we we arrived and one time I heard a distant airplane and it got louder and louder until the sound penetrated my soul and sounded like it landed in the middle of the field. Then they made it sound like someone was running around the top of the stadium around and around. Then Pink Floyd who haven't toured like this in 7 years and they open up with a 28 minute Echo's. There is so much to say about that show. I'm glad I went, but I was never the same again.
