The seagull sound effect is achieved by David taking his Vox wah wah pedal and reversing the cord plugs. That is, the wah wah pedal's output to the amp is plugged straight from the guitar and the input is plugged into the amp. On his black strat he switches to the two bottom pickups and the tone knob is all the way off and the volume is turned all the way up. The guitar is then played through the tone knob turning up the tone creates the effect. Turning it back slowly gives it the laughing effect. Note that at the very beginning of the song David is rubbing the strings of his guitar with a solid steel slide/tone bar in his right hand as he frets the strings with his left. That gives the guitar a violin kinda sound. Then at about the 2:40 mark in your video you see him switch out the tone bar for a steel slide on the finger of his left hand. Also, Rick at the very beginning is playing a grand piano that is mic'd through a Leslie speaker. There are three Leslies in that bank of speakers. They are the short brown cabinets behind Nick, David and Rick respectively. Rick then moves to what looks like his Hammond organ. Though he also played a Farfisa Compact Duo. At 19:47 between Rick's hands you can see the gold letters "compact duo". This video is part of Adrian Maben's movie that came out in the mid 70s but it was filmed in the first week of October 1971.

David Gilmour has never again played Echoes live since Rick Wright (keyboards) died. He has always considered Echoes a "duet" both in singing & in the way the keyboards & guitar played off each other. He said "another guy could learn the keyboard part, but could never have the chemistry that I had with Rick". Their final performance before Rick's death always hits me...especially the last part ...it's so beautiful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKOzo6KBardqo9U

There is a live version of Echoes from David Gilmour's 2006 "On an Island" solo tour. Rick Wright, Pink Floyd's keyboardist, joined him on that tour. Their last performance on that tour was in Gdansk, Poland and their performance of Echoes would be the very last time it will ever be performed live. Unbeknownst to David at the time, his good friend Richard was battling cancer and would succumb soon thereafter. So that performance, and the interaction between the too, is extremely poignant and emotional.
@TheMule712 жыл бұрын
The last part is meant to be a deep and sweet conversation between David's guitar and Rick's keyboards, and it would never be the same w/o Rick. I think David said he won't play Echoes live ever again after Rick's death.

This song was extremely important for the band. From Echoes (more exactly Meddle (71'), the album) they finished polishing his style and founding a route. Next is history, 4 of the best conceptual albums of all times: Dark Side of the Moon (73'), Wish you were here (75'), Animals (77') and The wall (79'). I think we can start with some Dark Side of the moon reactions :), or finishing the Wish you were here album (I think wish you were here is the only song left)

Congratulations for coming to this masterpiece! But now, you really should stay a bit longer in Pompeii, there's a lot more to come! The versions of 'Set the controls' and 'Saucerful of secrets' are phenomenal, and Ricks' parts make them unprecedented! What to speak of 'Careful with that axe'! Sometimes I think the Floyd had been like psychic mediums, channeling moods and emotions from another realm and converted it into sound on our plane! They really wrote the soundtrack to my life! Keep up the good work!

Yep, you got it 1000% right. Their voices together in this song are nothing short of angelic, stunningly beautiful sound. Not sure if you noticed because i'm not sure most people do, but David messes up the lyric at 22.35, he says Inviting instead of inciting. You can see he says inviting twice and looks over at Richard at gives a slight smile at the end of it, like he knew he just messed up. Even Richard looks up at him and then turns his head away for the next line cause i think you can tell he was going to smile back too because of his error. That part of this performance always gives me a smile.

Saw this as the encore in the old Boston garden back in 1975, it was surreal to see David Gilmour from around 50 feet away, sitting on the edge of the stage during the incredible solo in the middle of the song with him making bird sounds into the cosmos. That followed Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety. Lucky as Hell and this retired, old hippie still enjoys their immortal music. Try Comfortably Numb Live at Pulse in 1994 or with David Bowie on David Gilmour's solo tour with Rick Wright in 2006. They will be a great musical journey for you as they have been for many millions for many decades now. Enjoy! 🎵

HI Glad to see someone so young really appreciating this music from before they were even born. In actual fact you WERE watching a movie, part of it anyway. A French film director, and Floyd fan, Adrien Maben wanted to make a movie using the bands music and after a few aborted ideas came up with an idea for a live performance in the ancient Roman ampitheatre at Pompeii whilst he was visiting as a tourist. Pompeii was buried by mountains of volcanic ash after the catastrophic eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79AD and the ampitheatre had never been used for a performance since then, even after it was excavated and opened for tourism. Fortunately, a local Professor at Naples University was a Floyd fan as well and got permission for the band to set up their full stage rig and film a performance in such an amazing location whilst it was closed for 6 days days to tourists so that the shoot could take place. It was never intended to have an audience save for a basic film crew and the ghosts of the victims of the ancient catastrophe, (although David Gilmour did revisit many years later to give a performance that did have an audience). Unfortunately they had a power cut for a couple of days and had a limited time left to finish the shoot. That is the reason for the cuts where the band is performing in a Paris studio, because they hadn't had the time to shoot all the footage they needed. The movie was released as Pink Floyd-Live in Pompeii in 1972/73 to be watched in Cinemas and over the intervening years released on DVD and other media several times with different versions such as a "Directors Cut" containing additional footage. Normally Echoes was played on stage in full but the Film Director decided to split it into Parts 1 and 2 which "book end" the movie with some of their other songs sandwiched in the middle. Unfortunately David Gilmour stopped performing many Floyd songs after the death of Richard Wright the keyboard player and co-vocalist on this song, he'll be now in in his mid 70's and I'm not sure if he will still be touring. Similarly for Roger Waters the bass player in this video. Nick Mason, the drummer, has a band called Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, with Nick on drums and young British musicians with a passion for early Pink Floyd music, which is what they play to a very high level, you might catch them on tour. Alternatively there are several tribute bands who tour like the Australian Pink Floyd, who are supposed to be really good, I know it's not the real thing but, unfortunately, it's as near as we'll get these days.

Incredible iconic performance among the ruins of Pompeii Italy, this performance was way back in 1971, over 50 years ago! These guys are all in their 20s here in 1971, this is also two years before they released their epic "Dark Side of the Moon" album, (1973 release). That album catapulted them into worldwide Rock Stars, not to mention the millions and millions of $ that came their way from that album alone. Currently that album has sold over 50 million copies alone! In 2006 David Gilmour, (guitar, lead vocals), and Rick Wright, (keyboards, synth), two members of Pink Floyd, did a concert in Gdansk Poland. Gilmour and Wright are the two Pink Floyd members that sing the harmony vocals in "Echoes". At that concert they did both parts of "Echoes", 1 and 2, with both of them singing their parts like they did in 1971, 35 years ago! For a die-hard Floyd fan, this is epic! Both Gilmour and Wright are in their 60s at the Gdansk concert. I've included a link to that "Echoes" performance that I would love to see you react to, At the very least you could just watch it on your own sometime. Judging how much you "get/understand" and enjoy Pink Floyd, you would really like this Gdansk Echoes! kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIi3aqePqrx8m6c

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. (1972) Concert documentary directed by Adrian Maben and featuring Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. Although the band perform a typical live set from the era, there is no audience beyond the basic film crew. The main footage in and around the amphitheater was filmed over four days in October 1971, using the band's regular touring equipment. Additional footage filmed in a Paris television studio the following December. (wiki) Thanks for sharing - liked.

Then, pour another, woof that down too, then pour a third one and go turn off all the lights. Put this or any Pink Floyd record on. Go find a bean bag or deep leather couch, put your headphones on and sink down into your chair, close your eyes, sip away the final drink, and let the music sooth your soul !!!

SUCH A CLASSIC...I never tire of it. Can you believe some people will never hear this? This band is one of the reasons I decided to get an electric guitar and start experimenting with music and sound in 1975. This is a masterpiece Now I've routinely simulated bird sounds and the slide and echo effects on the bass guitar, and other sounds can easily be duplicated, but the most significant point of P. F. is that they were creative INNOVATORS. This was never done before nor since... and this is the kind of thing only innovators do. Cheers🌛

A company called HIP-O-RECORDS produced a DVD of Pink Floyd live in Pompeii that was filmed in 1972 and they remixed re-edited and produce this DVD in 2003. That way you can see the entire documentary which has them playing numerous older songs recording parts of Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road and a lot of interviews. If you're really wanting to learn a lot of history of Pink Floyd this is a good DVD to do it on. One interesting note David Gilmour is producing another album right now and Rodger Waters is planning on touring this year. So you might be able to kind of experience a Pink Floyd concert live if Rodger Waters comes near your town. He's getting older but still puts on an incredible show!!

The high "Ping" at opening and closing is explained by Richard Wright in an interview somewhere. Sorry, can't remember where. Song best experienced on LSD. I remember the first time I heard this I was tripping listening to it on a walkman (portable music device that played cassette tapes) on headphones. At first, when it hits the trippy breakdown I couldn't tell if it was the song or the batteries in my walkman dying or the drugs hitting me hard. lol...Anyways you sound like you're from my neck of the woods with that accent. And that guitar where it's all squeaky is done with a combo of slide and volume knob & whammy bar. No point in going into the pedal setup. But that's basically how it was done. Pompeii was a devastating event from early history. I recommend you look it up if you haven't already.

Other than a few flashes, you see very little of Roger Waters in this video. I can only guess that was his choice, but I've never been able to understand why. The iconic guitar riff that follows the verses was plagiarized by Andrew Lloyd Weber for his musical drama "Phantom of the Opera," but it was without permission from the group.

And Waters decided it wouldn't be worth it to sue Lloyd Webber. Instead he references the sheer audacity of the man (composer?) in his song It's A Miracle on his album Amused To Death ('Lloyd Webber's awful stuff runs for years and years and years and years...')

A vomitorium is a passage situated below or behind a tier of seats in an amphitheatre or a stadium, through which big crowds can exit rapidly at the end of a performance. They can also be pathways for actors to enter and leave stage.[1] The Latin word vomitorium, plural vomitoria, derives from the verb vomō, vomere, "to spew forth". In ancient Roman architecture, vomitoria were designed to provide rapid egress for large crowds at amphitheatres and stadia, as they do in modern sports stadia and large theatres.[2] hence the modern word vomit to be sick, excuse the subject.

I hope, by now, somebody has told you that most of Pink Floyd's most-known albums are all concept albums, meaning they should be listened to from first track to last, in order, uninterrupted for you to get the FULL meaning of each song. And, if you listen to them from a vinyl copy, you will not even hear the songs change from one to the next. From cds you will hear a slight dead-air gap. Does NOT happen on vinyl, each side almost sounding like one song. And that was the idea. One story told in many chapters. At least for the first time listen, the album should be done so that each song is placed in context of the whole concept. THEN when you re-listen to a singular song, you will know the WHOLE idea, in context to the album, what it is all about. That squeaking / screeching sound is the magic of Mr. David Gilmour's guitar. Which does not sound like ANY other guitar on this planet. And I have been listening to music since 1975, and Pink Floyd, imo, was, is and always will be the best group ever! Dark Side of the Moon has set (is still setting?) the record for how many weeks on the Top Hits chart, with, I believe, over 900 weeks! Phantom of the Opera stole their famous riff from this song. Pink Floyd never bothered taking it to court.

Perhaps the movie soundtrack you are thinking of is Phantom of the Opera which users (Roger Water would say steals) the same chromatic run used in Echoes. Waters considered suing Andrew "Floyd" Weber for copyright infringement but never did.

Another great reaction. There's an impromptu version of the ending of this David Gilmour's band broke into when rehearsing, A search for 'David Gilmour -Echoes Acoustic Version' should take you to it. Pink Floyd (and Roger Waters) have been my favourite band since discovering Dark Side Of The Moon in 1973. It's great to see you enjoying this music and sharing an experience not only over distance, but over time. Best wishes👍👍👍

You need to check out David Gilmour Live in Pompeii ...It is his return to there after 40 plus years of being there with Pink Floyd he and Pink Floyd are the only to have performed there since the Gladiators did before the Volcano covered it all in ashes

They recorded this at the same time they were mastering The Dark Side of the Moon. 2 fun DSotM facts; it was in the Billboard chart’s Top 200 for 147 weeks, over 14 years and since it’s 1972 release it has been IN the top 200 MORE than it has been out of it. THIS was the last show they played nothing off that album.

Another song I recommend by Pink Floyd that’s kind of similar to this song is Atom Heart Mother.

Please listen the the last live revision of this before Richard Wright passed away... its David Gilmour Echoes live Gdansk the connection between David and Richard is incredible, also there's a small impromptu David Gilmour Echoes acoustic version. Good reactions 👍

great reaction. a lot of their songs sound as if they belong in a movie. only the album, 'More' is, though, although, the track, 'Time', from the Dark Side Of The Moon album, has been used in the introduction to the recent movie, 'Eternals', although the album is from '73

Ha ha yes it is definitely a crime to put an ad in between a Pink Floyd song mark my words, most have been fined and jailed lol! Good luck with the rest of their songs,...there will never ever be another Pink Floyd, never!

This live version was far better than their album IMO and yes, there was a bit of a contention in part if this song that sounded like the James Bond theme but the copy writers had the good grace to let it pass.

You should the title track from Atom Heart Mother, their previous album. Also over 20 minutes long, and shows the speed of recording technology improvements in almost 2 years, and how they evolved. Echoes is my favourite track, but Wish you were here is their “tour de force” and needs to be listened to in one go, just like I did in 1975. They were the most technically involved band, as you hear, and, as former architecture students, the live shows were beyond belief - enjoyed then, still love it all today ❤️
