You should try to imagine how we felt when this album came out in 1975. We didn't have any kind of electronic devices at home other than a TV with perhaps five channels on it and a stereo. There were no computers, cell phones, video games, DVD players Etc! Additionally, this was during the analog period In history and they did not have any computers to put together a kind of mix like this so we heard nothing like this beforehand and it still sounds futuristic in 2022!! Anyway the end of this song is a ride up the high-speed elevator to the penthouse and the start of "have a cigar" at the big party with the greasy executive with the cigar putting his arm around the band! Pink Floyd is a mysterious bottomless rabbit-hole so keep enjoying your journey with them and keep up the good work!

Five channels...that was posh LOL. We had three in the UK and I used to listen to this in my car with its one speaker. Great days though, going to a mate's house to play records, Floyd, Purple, Tull, Yes, Genesis

That was awesome. You reminded me of my granddaughter when she heard this song. A tender young mind got blown. You did figure Pink Floyd music out fast. One experiences Pink Floyd music. They are by far the best band to step on stage or studio. Check the history of this band. It's fascinating. I got my first experience in 1972 and have been amazed the entire time.

Now try to imagine putting on headphones back in the 1970's before the Internet, before "electronic music" was a thing, having the volume up waaay too loud and listening to Pink Floyd which simply didn't fit the traditional Pop, Rock, Blues etc etc but seemed to be some other worldly fusion😉 Sometimes I wonder, how did we get from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd and then end up with Justin Bieber?🤣 So great to see someone go through the "first listen" & remind me how I felt nearly 50 years ago! Oh and if you think, wow dude your quite old, then absolutely right now, listen to Pink Floyd - "Time" from the album The Dark Side of the Moon and have the lyrics to hand. I was so lucky I heard it all those years ago 😉

Records became too expensive to make. And computers took all the profit out of the record business so no one is willing to invest the big money it takes to produce real music anymore. It’s too expensive with too small a payoff because everyone just listens on KZbin or Spotify now instead of buying records. So everything today is fast and mass produced with little thought.

One of their best--so original, creative, and effective at creating this mechanized, hollowed-out, bleak world...the throbbing pulse created by the VCS3, Rick Wright's sinister Minimoog leads, the octave-separated vocals (like an imprisoned wailing)...it feels like an H.R. Giger painting put to sound.

Pink Floyd IS an experience, they are Legendary! A person feels Pink Floyds music as much as they listen to it, there's a deep cerebral connection between Pink Floyds music and the people listening. Pink Floyd music is always best listening to with headphones, in so many songs there is just so much going on in the background. Also, listening to Pink Floyd whole albums in one sitting is always the best way to listen to them, because virtually all of their albums are concept albums, they tell a complete story. But listening that way is not practical in a KZbin setting, although some do, do it, and Pink Floyd doesn't block use of their music/video, so that helps too. So, with that in mind, you should check out their studio version of "Time" from their 1973 "Dark Side of the Moon" album. I think you'd really enjoy that, and also a live version "Comfortably Numb" from their 1994 Pulse concert is a Phenomenal performance!

I think this song mostly grew out of Syd Barrett's experience with pop stardom back in 1967 -- his desire to just be an artist coming up against the realities of the music business and what is required to survive there. This song and Have A Cigar are companion pieces -- the former describes arriving at the knowledge that your youthful dreams and desires have been corrupted and you are now just a cog in a vast machine; the other describes the reality of being an artist and dealing with music business executives who see you as nothing more than a money-making vehicle for their bottom lines. That said, the lyrics are vague enough that it could be applied to many different scenarios. Also, as others have said, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, that bookends the album, is a brilliant composition that will blow your mind. Wish You Were Here is one of those top tier albums that will reward listening for the rest of your life.

@@kevinohara2618 Yeah, most definitely. I mean, without Waters stating specifically what he was thinking when he wrote the songs, I think what happened with Syd informed Welcome to the Machine... but Have a Cigar is definitely from the bands' experience with success after Dark Side.

I saw the Pink Floyd Animals tour in Cleveland in the mid 70's. I paid $11.00 for the ticket, which was twice as much as I had ever paid for a concert. I was hesitant to spend all that money back then (sounds silly now). They played the entire Animals album and many other songs from their catalogue including Welcome To The Machine. After the show was over I was saying that I would have paid to see it twice, once to listen to the music and once to just enjoy the visuals. To this day one of the most amazing concerts I have ever been to, and I've been to many.

Young lady, you had a Pink Floyd experience. I think I heard this album the first time in 1976 brought directly from London and all our neighbors liked it or not they had the same experience because all Pink Floyd songs must listen on full volume. Some liked it some cursed me. Actually, almost everything was arranged or written by Roger Waters the most controversial genius of the band. You just did dig a deep hole for yourself, which gonna take years to climb out of it. The lyrics do make young and old to think about life’s deeps and highs.

That’s the most radical interpretation of this song. It’s really a question of your validity in the music industry. The album cover shows 2 men shaking hands. One is from the music industry, one is the aspiring musician. He’s the one on fire. Getting “burned” in a one sided deal. That’s what the next song portrays Excellent reaction though. .

I worked in a restaurant in NYC many years ago when Pink Floyd was playing in NJ (I didn't go). Pink Floyd's manager had a birthday and they celebrated at the restaurant. I had a unique opportunity to ask David Gilmore what really happened to Syd. He said it was really sad and tragic. Basically he snapped when his father died, becoming more and more "out there" as time went on, to the point it was difficult to work with him. I had a friend in High School, freshman class president, smart, outgoing. His mom died the summer before sophomore year, and he slowly started to lose it over the next couple years, to the point that he dropped out and never graduated. He did drugs , like Syd, but I wouldn't blame his downward spiral to drugs. Legend has it that Syd was Rock's first acid casualty, but the drugs were just a byproduct of the mental issues he had. I would recommend listening to the albums Barrett and The Madcap Laughs, his two solo albums produced by Gilmore (the man who replaced Syd) so you can hear the maniacal genius that he was (RIP).
