I was lucky enough to be at the recording of this song back in September 1971 when I was a mere 17 year old. The performance took place at the BBC Paris studio for the In concert programme hosted by John Peel. This was their opening number and the concert also featured One of These Days and Echoes I regularly attended these John Peel hosted concerts which were recorded on Thursday evenings and broadcast on Radio 1 on Sunday afternoons. Amongst the other bands that I saw were Rod Stewart and the Faces, Deep Purple, Supertramp, Fairport Convention, Humble Pie, Roxy Music, T Rex, Family, Atomic Rooster......plus many many more. A fantastic time and all for free as tickets for BBC recordings were complimentary. All you had to do was keep writing in to apply, include a stamped addressed envelope and four tickets would be sent to you by return post. Amazing!

This is an incredible performance and arrangement. Just WOW! Funny how everyone on the comment section is praising Gilmour but few mentioned Wright's organ playing on this performance. The melodies, harmonies, counterpoint, timbre, patience, accompaniment etc..., just wonderful to sink my ears into it. The way he lifts Gilmour onto a floating cloud, with so much feeling. Never overplaying. Super soulful and gentle. Just listen...

This one of the few examples, where the Pink Floyd re-invented a song especially for the live performance. It is more rock-oriented, it is more room for improvisation. Pink Floyd are the masters of dynamic rock performances. Sometimes very lyric and tender and then again explosive-ecstatic

Had taped this on a cassette back in 1991. Would get home from work in the summer and as the Mrs was preparing supper would take the 4 kids on a 1/2 hour ride on the surrounding country roads west of Roseville IL. This was the 1st song played in that 1984 Dodge P/U. Windows down cassette player turned up and cruising 35-45 mph down country lanes. I'll never forget it. Kids ranged from 13 to 3 back then. 3 oldest definitely remember those evening drives, the baby not so much. But they are Good memories for me of the music and my alone time with my 4 children.

This song was considered for Floyd's "Best of" album "Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd 2001". Gilmour confirmed it in an interview and shared he made a case for it, but no Atom Heart Mother songs are represented on ""Echoes". When Floyd's manager, Steve O'Rourke died in 2003, "Fat Old Sun" and "Great Gig In The Sky" were played by Gilmour, Richard Right and Nick Mason at his funeral. High praise indeed.

jsvkia1 From Wikipedia - This song was one of several to be considered for the band's "best of" album, Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd (2001), as remarked by James Guthrie, the producer of Echoes. Gilmour himself confirmed this story on Johnnie Walker's Radio 2 drivetime show in 2002 that he had made a case for this song to be included, but was out-voted and the album Atom Heart Mother goes unrepresented on that album. "Fat Old Sun" is perhaps best described as a pastoral, a hymn of praise to the countryside (as several early Pink Floyd songs were, such as "Grantchester Meadows" from Ummagumma and "Green Is the Colour" from More). The bell sounds heard at the beginning and the end of the song were later used again in "High Hopes" from their album The Division Bell and in "Louder than Words" from their album The Endless River. When the Floyd's manager, Steve O'Rourke, died in 2003, Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason played "Fat Old Sun" and "The Great Gig in the Sky" at O'Rourke's funeral.

One of the greatest keyboardists ever. I'm so glad he gets regarded as such, because he is such an underrated member of the band, but search "best keyboardists ever" and you will see him regarded among the best ever. He was so amazing. R.I.P. Rick Wright.

I know someone has probably said this before. weather your favorite band member, Pink Floyd would not of made the impact they have without all of there talents together, yes even Syd. So stop arguing and just sit back and enjoy the music for what it is, and that is a work of art.

I understand and appreciate what Roger Waters brought to Pink Floyd but I don't think Roger Waters understands or Appreciates what David Gilmour brings, .......for me , his good Tone and lead playing adds a lot and solidifies things, and this is also some of Rick Wrights best playing, I wish he had done more like this. Thanks for sharing PinkyflOyd ! Will
