Pink Floyd - Matilda Mother (1967)

"Matilda Mother" is the third track on the UK version of the LP (which I have on CD) that started it all for Pink Floyd, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, released in 1967.
Although written by Syd Barrett, the lead vocal is sung by Richard Wright with Barrett singing the final verse. Despite the ordering of songs with "Astronomy Domine" set as the opening cut, "Matilda Mother" was the first song ever recorded for the album. As images from fairy tales and legends play out in the video, Matilda Mother (played by Sharon Tate from her role in the film Thirteen aka Eye Of The Devil, 1966-67), can be seen telling tales to the children in a castle setting in scenes not unlike part of a somewhat dark tale of enchantment.

Funny thing. When this first played on Fright Night on Friday nights on TV (when I was only about 13), I not only did not yet know who Sharon Tate was, but never made the connection between this character she played and her until many years later. I also never made the connection between Sharon and the recurring character she played as a bank secretary in The Beverly Hillbillies until fairly recently.

What happened to Sharon Tate was something out of a nightmare. It is hard to believe the murderers actually gained support from so many in the hippie community who thought the Beatles White album was cool because psycho killer and cult leader Charles Manson got his ideas from it. From all remembrances Sharon was a sweet person who loved life and that life, the life of her unborn child, and the lives of her friends, were taken away coldly and without mercy.

I think it's more fantasy. LOTR. The song "The Gnom" from this album is build on the Hobbit But it is a story told by a mother.

@@andersguldagerlarsen Curious, as a Barrett Junkie Ive never read or heard any claim that any somg off Piper at the Gates of Dawn was inspired or influenced by Tolkien. If theres evidence Please link that claim or list where it was sourced from. Cheers
