It's David inventing the Pink Floyd sound that we all know and love... Roger was the words... But David along with Richard on the keys were the men who moulded the sound.

Although Roger didn’t pen the words on this song. David asked him to and Rog told him to get stuffed. Apparently Gilmour was embarrassed by the lyrics he wrote which is in part the reason the vocals are buried in the track by the instruments.

Yesss at last hahaha! This album was the band members bringing their solo contributions, sort of a brainstorming session for the band to find its footing after losing Syd Barret. One newcomer to the band did this: David Gilmour. By the end of this track, he had invented the new Pink Floyd sound that would lead to Echoes. This is a true gem and I'm so glad tou finally got to it!

I was one of those guys who highly recommended you (and others) listen to the Narrow Way (part III especially). Parts I and II are great, but the sound, the feeling, the trippy quality of the last part is out of this world. It captures the quintessence of that Pink Floyd sound. Another early Floyd track you should definitely react to is the beautiful Cirrus Minor. Hope you can get to it soon.

This album was an experiment in music and sound. They learned a lot as is evident in their later work. If you get a chance check out "Several Small Species of Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave Grooving with a Pict". Yes, it is weird as the title suggest. Thanks for the reaction!! "Grantchester Meadows" is very good song as well.

Every time....Every time I see you are going to do a Pink Floyd song.....I get so excited because they are my favorite band of all time. I just can't wait to see what it's going to do to you as I too feel the music the same way. It's been 50 years or more since I fell in love with these guys and it NEVER gets old to me. Great job on a great song....please keep it going.❤❤❤

Wow: Deep cut from Ummagumma, an album (itself a bit of a deep-cut in their discography) that had four pieces of music, one from each one of the band members, among other tracks. "The Narrow Way" was David Gilmour's contribution.

PLEASE READ MR SQUEEZE!!!!!!! -------> PLEASE react to another song on this album that I have been requesting in your comment section for a LONG TIME. CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE EUGENE It is a LIVE recording that showcases the amazing ability of Pink Floyd to weave a whisper-quiet beginning and build dynamics to an orgasmic climax and then come back down again. This level of artistry only comes from years of playing together and knowing every move your bandmate will make next. The other thing I love about this song is that it was recorded before the band made it mainstream with Dark Side. The audience is respectful and doesn't make a peep until the very last cymbal tap is made. AMAZING!!!!! BONUS suggestion: Same album, a song that will fry your fragile brain ----> SEVERAL SMALL SPECIES OF ANIMALS GATHERED TOGETHER IN A CAVE AND GROOVING WITH A PIC. You are welcome! :) Keep doing what you do!!

I suggest some solo Gilmour from his two albums from late 70s/early 80s. All the songs are titled. First album is called David Gilmour, the second is About Face. Pick any songs you want, they're that good. A suggestion to start from both is "Short And Sweet" and "Murder".

Great reaction as usual! I am a long time sub, but don't often comment - I'm long winded lol! So I mostly lurk. I really think you should try reacting to the Tribute to Pink Floyd done by one of my favorite bands. The tribute (NOT a cover) song is High Hopes by Nightwish. Its a Pink Floyd song off their Division Bell album. Nightwish also has a HUGE catalog of music to go through. High Hopes is sung by their bassist, but 99.9% of their songs are sung by their female lead vocalist. Live shows are always the way to go with Nightwish. They are one of the tightest bands I've ever seen Live, right up there with the band Tool - which I also think you'd love bc of the deep lyrics. For now, try High Hopes Live from End of An Era by Nightwish. The Nightwish Army will come and kindly help in your Nightwish journey. Expect "General" Gabriel to leave you a very helpful message with info on the band and many links so you don't have to search them out for many of their songs. I really hope that you can react to them and hope you like them enough to continue exploring their vast catalog! They have been around since 1996. Thanks for sharing all of your musical journeys with us! I really appreciate your humor and your thoughts, Mark! Sending you & your family blessings from Alabama!

Lyrics can be good [ they can also be pretty crap ]. Riffs, and 'tunes' can be great too. But some bands, notably PF, The Beatles, & surprisingly the Beach Boys, were going into exploring " sounds" and " soundscapes" as parts of their music. Bear in mind that this is long before 'digital', computers [ they existed, but were merely slow number crunchers ] and synthesizers. What synths there were, were all analogue. Most 'effects' were done with tapes ( There was the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, who gave us the original Dr Who Theme.[qv Delia Derbyshire ] ). There were artists exploring these areas ( Stockhausen, Terry Riley & others and later 'KrautRock' bands like Tangerine Dream, especially as the electronics improved slowly.- Dr Robert Moog was already making waves in America ). This phase of PF, and their development of " Musique Concrete" was the main exposure of the wider world to this genre, apart from the aforementioned Beatles & Beach Boys, and a growing number of 'Progressive' bands.
@chassetterfield9559
@chassetterfield9559 Ай бұрын
The Beatles had already given us backwards sounds, by recording something, and threading it backwards into a tape machine for playback & re-record. They had also come up with extended tape loops, and varying the recording /playback speeds of tapes. In effect, they had created what we would now call 'sampling', but they didn't have the VAST amount of material to sample that we have now.

There's an album called 'Atom Heart Mother'. One side is the eponymous 'suite'. It has taken me the best part of 40-50 years to get my head around it, and I have listened to some seriously WEIRD shit. Due to touring commitments, the band recorded the backing drums & bass, and left it as a single bounced down track on tape, on which their orchestral arranger laid a full orchestra & choir, and then PF returned and laid on some 'musique concrete' [MC ], and David & Rick 'magic'. The 'B' side has more weirdness, through 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast', which is lots more pastoral guitar work, like part I of The Narrow Way, mixed with some SERIOUS MC. As I say, I listened many, many times, before it clicked. This does NOT constitute a 'recommendation'. I've heard loads of people say that it's the greatest thing that early PF ever did..

Just as albums like this were recorded on 4 & 8 track machinery, using analogue tape etc, compared to 128 track digital desks like today, even that album art was a masterpiece. Nowadays, a competent digital graphic artist or photoshop artist could knock that up in 5 minutes, and probably make a coffee in the middle. But, that was done with analogue film, emulsion on celluloid, and wet chemical processed. Then, the image[s] had to be carefully enlarged to appropriate size, cut out and physically overlaid onto another photo, before 'bouncing down' that onto a new photo, then repeat, and repeat. There's a special name for this type of 'photo within a photo' type of image, which I can never remember. But this is one of the classic, off cited examples.

This is an unusual Pink Floyd piece in that it is actually only one member doing all the instruments and vocals. Ummagumma was a double LP album. The first LP was a collection of live performances. The second LP was studio work with each member doing their own work. The Narrow Way parts I-III is all guitarist and singer David Gilmour.

Ummagumma was a bit of a "filler". A two vinyl set, one record was a live set. The second was four separate sections, a quarter of each disk of the members own more or less "solo" contibutions. Water's "Granchester Medows" is wonderful. And then his " Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" is whimsical ( Being charitable there ). The following is right out Wikipedia : Gilmour has since stated he was apprehensive about creating a solo work, and admits he "went into a studio and started waffling about, tacking bits and pieces together", although part one of "The Narrow Way" had already been performed as "Baby Blue Shuffle in D Major" in a BBC radio session in December 1968. Gilmour said he "just bullshitted" through the piece. He asked Waters to write some lyrics for his compositions, but Waters refused to do so. The third part of the suite was briefly performed live in early 1969. Even when the Floyd were at their worst.............They were great
