Us and Them
And after all we're only ordinary men
Me, and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do
Forward he cried from the rear
and the front rank died
And the General sat, as the lines on the map
moved from side to side
Black and Blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and Down
And in the end it's only round and round and round
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
the poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside
Down and Out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about
With, without
And who'll deny that's what the fightings all about
Get out of the way, it's a busy day
And I've got things on my mind
For want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died

My son passed away on February 07 2020 in a motorcycle accident he was only 26. We went to see Roger Waters in concert together and listened to this song in the car. We both love Pink Floyd’s music. I miss you so much Ricky. One day we will be together again Love you ma ❤️

Back around 2009, I remember being in an incredibly dark place and feeling completely alone. One night, having reached a breaking point, I decided to take a long walk away from the house, during a gentle snowfall. As this song played in my headset, I aimlessly passed homes with beautiful holiday lights until I unexpectedly ended up on a clifftop with a full view of the ocean. Sitting alone near the ocean at night, with the wonderful lights and gentle snowfall around me, all while listening to this song (on repeat), a sense of clarity and reassurance emerged. Despite feeling extremely alone and hopeless, this song (for some reason) gave me the chance to take a deep breath and be with my own thoughts. In many ways, it saved my life* It was a defining moment in my life and I'll always associate this song with that night. It's been awesome reading all of the ways this song was a part of your life, in one way or another :) *sorry if I'm being dramatic, but it's kinda true.

I was in the darkest place of my life in 2019 and there seemed to be no escape. I reached the lowest of lows so many times and thought there would be no end. I had several songs to help me along, but the best dream I've ever had completely flipped the script and turned the tide in my favour and within 2 months all my pain and suffering was over. And now with COVID on the loose I find myself in somewhat similar circumstances. I credit my dream with saving my life because I seriously considered ending it because I thought I can't give up but how can I win? I got some help from the supernatural and I find this is a great song to help rid myself of depressing emotions. We gotta keep the faith. We're both well-equipped to deal with whatever life throws us next. Stay strong 💪

I was introduced to Pink Floyd during quarantine by my grandpa. He’s a sucker for oldies, 1950s to the 80s. When we went vinyl shopping, he insisted I get DSOTM and as soon as this song played, I felt a sense of sadness. I think this song made me realize how special he is to me and how he was my only supporter through darkest times. Thank you grandpa, I wouldn’t be here without you

I was responding to the critically important statement that a rock band is more spiiritual than the church and some time ago I believe I’ve l earned the reason why(because we’ve emtered into the final-Laodicean-age). My conclusion may be wrong but it involves no glue. Just a seeking on my part.

Dont mean to bum anyone out, but every time i hear this song i think of my father. Every Saturday growing up my dad would blare his floyd & make his famous biscuits & gravy. playing floyd all the way from Shine on you crazy Diamond to The Dogs of War. im 18 & his life was taken due to colon cancer in early November 2015. The reason this song made me have the courage to post something like this is because i played this and dozens of other pink floyd songs in his ears while he lay in a coma for weeks. Pink Floyd gave me some of the final moments with my best friend .. iv never commented anything on youtube before .. Im never the type to seek sympathy but this song brings me joy and reminds me he will always be with me. Me and You. God only knows its not what we would choose to do.

Two of my best friends from Lake Tahoe, California were 12 and 14 years old in 1976. They skied into a closed area on the backside of Northstar ski resort before a huge blizzard hit. They were lost for days before being found. Lance Severnson died of exposure, and Mike Kelly lost toes to frostbite, only to die by suicide the next summer. This was played at Lances funeral... Mike was the one who first played Darkside for me... we all skied together often. I will always wonder why I was not with them when they got lost. I spent a lot of time with Mike before he died. I was 11. I've spent my life trying to live every day as a gift and a privilege that was denied to them. I feel as though this music, and that experience, have opened my mind to a wider perception of reality, and have given me a greater appreciation of my own existence. RIP Lance and Mike. Love Corey

it makes me so sad that people dismiss this as hippie music or outdated. i used to listen to this in middle school and high school and it was such a comfort. then i started getting older and got into very angry, noisy music and i lost touch. coming back to it feels like coming home. i didn't even know how badly i missed the pure love and sensitivity of pink floyd. if only every person with power in our world could be so human, but it doesn't always work that way. it's always us vs. them. or as Fallout always says, "War. War never changes."

+Jonathan Putnam Well, I would have to say that "hippie" music (if someone wants to label it as that) from that time period is probably the greatest music ever recorded. Groups/artists like Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Doors, Joni Mitchell, the Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues, etc, and these guys - Pink Floyd - were incredible talents that can stand up to anyone, anywhere, in terms of songwriting, melody, and musicianship. I'm just ever so thankful I got to experience it firsthand.

This song gives me goosebumps every time, and damn that saxophone is so perfectly placed. Takes you to an airy/spacey kind of place where everything feels at peace and not so broken. Music is medicine for the soul. I have this album on vinyl back home, and I used to have a revolving multi-color light fixture in my bedroom back in college. If the stress of life was ever getting me down I’d just turn off the bedroom lights, turn on those multicolored lights, and blast this album as high as I could. Always made my problems seem less significant. Truly a beautiful piece of music.

Pink Floyd - Us and Them Lyrics: Us and them And after all, we're only ordinary men Me and you God only knows, it's not what we would choose to do Forward he cried from the rear And the front rank died The General sat, and the lines on the map Moved from side to side Black and blue And who knows which is which and who is who Up and down And in the end, it's only round and round and round Haven't you heard it's a battle of words The poster bearer cried Listen son, said the man with the gun There's room for you inside (They're maybe gonna kill ya. So like, if you give 'em a quick, short, sharp, shock, they don't do it again. Dig it? I mean he get off light, come to think. Of rationalising it, once. It's only a difference, but why go and ruin it? I mean good manners don't cost nothing, do they, eh?) Down and out It can't be helped, but there's a lot of it about With, without And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about Out of the way, it's a busy day I've got things on my mind For want of the price of tea and a slice The old man died

Ok relax. This song is good for 70s standards but we’ve gotten so advanced that music today is much much better. We have drake, post Malone, and cardi b. There music is easier to listen to , faster and more exciting. It’s just better this is boring compared to the stuff we have today. It’s way over rated and it’s quite simple. Music today is much more complex.

To me, the first 30 seconds of this song are some of the most tragically beautiful moments I have ever experienced. Somehow they captured the pure essence of bittersweet nostalgia and found a way to express it through sound. I feel sadness for people who don't really enjoy music in the emotional sense. I'm not criticizing anybody, we are all wired differently. but i would hate life if i only looked for a beat you can dance to in the music i listen to. it just has a huge impact on so many people. it's an amazing art form, if you think about how it works.

+D.W-When it comes to the "story" of the album, the way I would describe this song would be "defeat." "Floyd" has given up on seeking a life that has any kind of meaning for him, a life he can call his own, and basically acquiesces to being used and abused. The anarchy, the sheer insanity, the utter and despicable violence that ravages the world has destroyed him, numbed him to the point closer to his complete collapse in Brain Damage/Eclipse. Nothing makes sense to him, even while everyone else insists that it does, and arguably it does start to make sense to him. He understands this is the way the world is, but he still can't accept it. And that understanding, that sad, hopeless despair while still trying to escape, to understand, begging just to know why it has to be this way, why the world devours everyone, that contradiction between understanding and (refusal of) acceptance only furthers his deterioration into insanity to where insanity becomes the far more comforting option, insanity is his prison but also his escape from a world that churns out constant darkness. Or, given the title, the insanity is only the darkness finally consuming him alive, consuming him whole to where darkness is all that remains.

Was just showing my son this 1973 actual album on my turntable next to my bed, my speakers are my Night stands. He is in awe of this album. I told him I had the pleasure and blessing of growing up with the greatest age of music of all time, the 70's. Man i was born two decades after the 70's were gone and i just don't fit in this generation. Period. All i wish is there was a great re-arising of the 70's and 80's songs again. I can't stand what music nowadays sound like, there will never be anything like the 70's and the 80's. You guys were so lucky to be born in times where music was at its prime. These twenty years meant as much to music as what Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and all the others did!. I bow my head to musicians of that era!

Want to share a personal story, Pink Floyd is one of my favourite bands. About two years ago, Roger Waters came to Mexico to give a free show in his Us and Them tour, at that time I had a girlfriend, we were together for 2 and a half years, and we went to the gig together. Have to say, one of my favourite concerts to date, but there was a moment that will stick to me forever, and it was, this song, because when it began she turned around and I held her in my arms and we slow danced and kissed. I was living a dream. We broke up 3 weeks ago, and the day we ended our love relationship we listened to this song again, slow danced to it and gave us our last kiss. This song repeats in my head ever since. And I don't hate it for that, it reminds me of pure joy and it will always do.
