My friend, your use of words to describe these albums is nothing short of art itself. Very bold, although understandable, to place the wall at #8. @@monty2005 It's curious that, from reading the comments on KZbin videos, Animals is like Marmite. You either love it or hate it. Maybe hate is too strong a word for Animals, but until The Wall was released, it was my least favorite of my Floyd collection. But then The Wall took that slot...
@monty20052 жыл бұрын
@@lazer2365 I agree about the Marmite thing. Animals came out a few months before I was born, so I can only remember The Wall coming out onwards (I remember being terrified by the video to Brick 2 when it was on Top of the Pops around Christmas ‘79). After I discovered DSotM and WYWH in my mums record collection around the age of 10 or 11, and Dark Side especially kicking off my PF habit, I went out and got the albums over yhe next few years (or got people to give them me as gifts). Animals was the last one of the big ones that I got, having always put it off because it only had five tracks. I can still remember the day I brought it home and listened to it for the first time. It was truly a WOW moment. I fell in love with the album the first time I ever heard it. It is my absolute favourite album, by any artist/band ever! Having heard the 2018 remix of Dogs, it’s given me a second WOW moment. Pigs is my favourite track, so I can’t wait until the 16th to hear it. I just wish there were live recordings from the In the Flesh tour, like professional ones. I definitely remember reading that James Guthrie was asked to work on one show from that tour after the success of Is There Anybody Out There, but for some reason he felt he couldn’t do it justice, yet it’s said there are no professional multi tracks of any of the shows. At least we have Oakland ‘77! As for The Wall, for me too it occupies my least favourite slot, at least of the Meddle onwards albums, but I had always wanted to see it performed live, and I was lucky enough to see Roger do it at Birmingham in an arena setting then again at Wembley Stadium. I have to say that was another WOW moment, especially at Birmingham. I’d love to see all of Animals performed live. Have you ever heard Live Frogs Set 2 by Les Claypool? It’s a fucking amazing set consisting entirely of Animals live!

Also, the musical pearls on "The Wall" shine because of David's musical work. The Final Cut has been one of the albums that make me cry every single time I listen to it and I always recommend it to others. It is one of my favorite albums by Pink Floyd and I don't find any post-Waters production worth musically or content-wise, except for maybe a couple of songs from a couple of albums. I have spent entire months dwelling in The Final Cut. I find it has one of the most dramatic abrupt nuances in the entire Pink Floyd catalog. And it requires tremendous sensitivity and tremendous fortitude to listen to it. No other album requires this type of self-check and mental preparation from the listener. David Gilmour does an amazing job where he contributes in it and I love the sax player's contribution as well. The lyrics are superb, touching, painful, deep. Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. My top 3 Pink Floyd albums would be; 1 Dark side of the moon 2 Wish you were here 3 Piper at the gates of dawn Really though, such a great band and so many amazing albums Best wishes

Interesting comments about The Wall. Another Brick had a profound effect on me as a 9 year old when it came out as a single, I've been a huge PF fan ever since. I've also always found that the last 1/4 of the album looses it's way.

i just wartched your solo pink floyd video and this video back to back....so great indeed....and your reviews of each album are brilliant....i love that you mentioned cymbaline, my favorite floyd song...ironically two of my favorite albums, endless river and final cut, made it on the low side of your list but that's cool...they are almost like richard wright and roger waters solo albums...animals and dark side are also a must for me...with those four i could be happy....peace and dark sides of the room always...rocky

My 2 favorites are Wish You Were Here and Piper at the Gates of Dawn. They both represent Floyd's 2 major lineups flawlessly, and are thematically linked in that WYWH is largely about Syd's fall into the abyss of insanity. Awesome list my friend.

I find myself listening to "More" more (ahem) than, dare I say it, Atom Heart Mother and Obscured by clouds. On the other hand I haven't listened to Ummagumma (completely agree with your pronunciation) for about 15 years. I quite like the more "bite-size" experimentation on More and love the pastoral aspects you pick up on, crossed with the harsh (Nile Song and its later reprise in "Ibiza Bar" - two of the heaviest tracks Floyd ever recorded). Perhaps the discipline (whatever it may have been) of writing for a film helped focus the noodling just a bit?
@stevenpatterson39724 жыл бұрын
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I think The Final Cut is one of the very best Floyd albums. Despite the cooling relationship between Waters and Gilmour, it also contains some great guitar work.

In my opinion THE FINAL CUT was the last really interesting Floyd album. Good Lyrics and strong melodies. But I do not like all the screams, explosions and machine noises. Without that it would be a much better album.

Over the years my ranking of PF albums has been in a continual state of flux. My first ever PF album was Relics and I suppose that we are strongly biased by that which we cut our teeth on. I'm still hopeful that someday I might enjoy those "weird" proggy aspects of Atom Heart Mother...which hasn't happened yet!

I loved that you speak as a true fan of the band's work. Congrats, mate! I feel exactly the same you do about the 2019 mix of A Momentary lapse of Reason. For me, it just became a true Pink Floyd album and I could finally enjoy all of those beautiful songs such as Terminal Frost or Yet Another Movie. Rick's keyboards from live performances and Nick's rerecorded drums just gave it that "timeless" feeling. Here's my ranking: 1 Dark Side of The Moon 2 The Division Bell 3 Wish You Were Here 4 Meddle 5 The wall 6 Animals 7 A momentary lapse of reason 8 Obscured by clouds 9 Atom heart mother 10 The final cut 11 The endless river 12 A sarceful of secrets 13 Piper at the gates of dawn 14 More 15 Ummagumma

First time listener and subscriber...while I may not agree with the rankings or some of the opinions, I enjoyed the analysis and descriptions, especially the more technical instrumental factors. One thing I don’t get from a lot of album reviewers and I think is paramount, is “what kind of overall mood does this album invoke?” Because music is largely about moods and emotive reactions. Edit: the pic of Syd at the end was unexpected and made me suddenly a bit weepy...

A well-conceived and researched, idiosyncratic survey with plenty of valuable information. I was unaware that A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON had been remixed. (Might be worth a listen.) Thanks also for the perspective on THE ENDLESS RIVER, another Floyd album that got by me. While I still lean toward MEDDLE, I have to admit to a growing appreciation of ATOM HEART MOTHER. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is still #1 but I find I go there less and less, preferring the instrumental grooves of WISH YOU WERE HERE. ANIMALS was, indeed, the first of the 'angry' records. I played it a lot back in the day but that was my final 'real-time' Floyd purchase. Despite some astounding moments, THE WALL and FINAL CUT are really a chore to get through. Maybe I've yet to appreciate Waters' overall narratives. Personally, I find myself having more fun with UMMAGUMMA and the soundtrack albums. The two earliest albums are always worth going back to, gradually divulging their hidden secrets. Thanks again, Barry!

If you like the instrumentals may I suggest the 1972 (early mix) of DSotM? Specifically that version of Great Gig in the Sky. If you haven’t heard it, it doesn’t feature the female vocalist so there’s a lot more emphasis on the instrumentals.
@charlesserre69283 жыл бұрын
@@ChiefXuligan I will be following your recommendation. For all its timeless genius, the one singular "blemish" on DSOTM, in my opinion, is the over extended vocal solo on Great Gig in the Sky.

I bought Atom Heart Mother because of the cow, and because the band was called Pink Floyd. I hadn't heard of them, but I often bought records in those days because of the cover art (e.g., Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?) I had a lovely LSD trip one Saturday which began with side one of Atom Heart Mother in headphones before I even got out of bed. But Wish You Were Here was the record where I became convinced that if there was a God, it might just be Pink Floyd. So that's my #1, with Dark Side and Meddle next. I guess I should listen to Animals again -- didn't grab me at the time it came out.

@Classic Album Review - As someone who bought Umma Gumma and Atom Heart Mother back when they were released on vinyl along King Crimson's in the Court of the Crimson King and other prog rock albums at the time, I'm neither a newbie nor a scholar on Floyd. But they influenced my own music over my life. I may not agree with some of the ranking here, but was surprised (unless I missed it), no mention of "Comfortably Numb". IMO Gilmour improved it in his latter performances by adding the searing climbs in the second solo and the salve of his voice remains timeless. The performance with David Bowie is just "wow..". There are a handful of other great performances also. I can also tangentially relate to the sense of feeling removed and lost it in that I had a short medical snafu around age 9 due to a surgery, as I recall. " a sort of " ...felt like two balloons" experience. But all that aside, to omit such a classic masterpiece herewith is sad IMO of course. All these decades later, it still gets to me. Again, if I have misheard, my apologies.

Fantastic ranking/reviews! Very well put and interesting takes. My top 5: DSotM, DB, WYWH, Animals, Wall. It’s oddly refreshing to see someone else unafraid to say how great Dark Side of the Moon is. It feels like so many knock it down because of its popularity and how cliche it is to say it’s a masterpiece. But this is one of those cases where the hype is very much earned. I rarely throw the word “perfect” out about any piece of media/art. But it truthfully is the closest thing imaginable to perfect to me.
