It's amazing that this has survived from a time when the Church had influence over debt and interest, and when borrowers were mainly dealing with private lenders. Today's bank managers set clear rules about loans and credit cards, so consideration is built into the system. Pinnel's Case seems to have moved from the town of unsecured debt, into the big city of contract-in-general.

That's a great way of putting it. Of course, nobody in an institutional context is citing Pinnel's, because it's all covered by statute now. But the principle is essentially unchanged.
