I guess Gepetto somehow got word of that Pinocchio went to Pleasure Island so that's why he got a ship to go there and in the process it got swallowed up by Monstro.

Actually, the vocal noises were done by bass singer Thurl Ravencroft (who was the voice for Tony the Tiger for Frosted Flakes/Frosties until his death in 2005), he appeared in many Disney movies along with the rest of the singing group The Mellomen including Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh. He also voiced Captain the Horse in 101 Dalmatians, One of the Card Soilders in Alice in Wonderland, Sir Bart in The Sword in The Stone, Al the Aligator in Lady and the Tramp and Kirby the Vacuum Cleaner in The Brave Little Toaster trilogy.

Yes, the bug's name IS a euphemism - and interesting crickets have 6 limbs, not 2. But "Jiminy" is also related to a root that has led to an astonishing number of English words. To jimmy a lock is to work it open. There was the invention of the cotton gin and the spinning jenny, all from a contraction of "engine." Also related: ingenious, ingenuity, genius, from a root "gen" that originally mean intrinsic or inherited cleverness. The same root also gave a parallel set of words relating to the inherited aspect: generation, genetics, genes. (Sorry - I love etymology.)

Great reaction! If you thought this film had dark moments, the book was darker. Lampwick, the boy who turned into donkey with Pinnochio, was sold and died in Pinocchio’s arms. The way it worked on Pleasure Island was that little boys who were easily naughty would be tricked, because they would have freedom to do whatever they want without knowing it’s consequences. As the morale goes naughty boys eventually make jackasses of themselves and therefore are transformed into one. Then they are sold to work hard labor and eventually die. It’s believed that the coachman, Barker, is a magic creature maybe an imp or a servant for the Devil himself that is sent to do this.. There are 2 other Pinocchio films I highly recommend; The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996) staring Johnathan Taylor Thomas, and Geppetto (2000) staring Drew Carey. Geppetto tells the story from Geppetto’s point of view and has great songs. 🤥🦗🧚🏻♂️

He’s supposed to be like a bogeyman/ Krampus type figure who only punishes and torments naughty, disobedient children, rather than a traditional villain who’s after the good guys.

32:00 Funny you mention that, given that Jiminy shares the same voice actor as the leader of the flock of crows in that film. Ouch.

Well Pinocchio is supposed to be Italian for "little pine" (The story originates from Italy). Side rant, anyone else questioning why Gepeto has an Austrian accent?

The next film released after Pinocchio was Fantasia, which was out the same year but it got the same fate as this film.

About halfway through this reaction; there are many lessons to be learned from this movie, but none that the Blue Fairy states lol. Lying on the second (?) day of his existence didn’t hurt him at all, save for the curse out on him by the fairy! And the lie was fanciful but barely an exaggeration. Because it was punished, however, it suggests that Pinocchio was a naughty child, even though if “adults” convinced a kid to go with them instead of school, it would definitely be an abduction! The idea that a boy shouldn’t be treated like a human unless they behave in a way that no child (or adult) acts is also wild. I do enjoy this movie perhaps partly because it’s so “problematic” lol. Life really is tough out there! XD That part’s realistic. Just grim.
@NoelleMar Жыл бұрын
Something else I realized is that the kids who are being “naughty” at Pleasure Island are just doing what the adult says. They aren’t breaking stained glass windows in actual places of worship or vandalizing art in real museums. Though I assume the intent is the opposite, the main message that emerges is to not trust authority figures! Jiminy Crickey is useless, Geppetto is sweet but Pinocchio finds and a sacrifices himself for HIM, and the blue fairy saves him once with magic. Otherwise, she doesn’t teach him a thing, and instead tells him things that don’t really help. And those are the GOOD authority figures!

@@NoelleMar A channel called There Will Be Fudd has a 3 part video about Pinocchio, I highly recommend it. This film is full contradictions and it's all intentional.

10:40 You're thinking 'real world'. This is a lesson for children. It's their behavior that turns them into jackasses.

Why does Goofy walk on two legs, talks, etc. while there is the dog Pluto who is just a dog? Why does Donald Duck not wear any pants but when he comes out of the shower supposedly naked, why does he wrap a towel around his lower section? Why can the Cowardly Lion talk in Oz, but Toto can't? (PS - in the original book, Oz was a real place, AND in the later sequels, Toto CAN talk.) In Roger Rabbit, Benny the cab drives a car? Illogical stuff, instead of being a head-scratcher, can be part of the inside joke.

Picking up a newborn kitten by the scruff of its neck is the only way a mother cat has to grab them. But since they weigh so little, it doesn't hurt them, up to about the time they get weaned. As they grow and gain weight, there is a point where this can give them a hernia. Humans shouldn't be handling kittens and certainly not cats this way. Okay, Figuro seems to be depicted young enough, but maybe the cartoon could have not reinforced this way to handle cats.

Carlo Collodi's novel isn't as sentimental but it does teach a lot more lessons than this movie. This movie is an excellent movie with the animation and story, but it has very little resemblance to the book.
