a bit hard to talk about a democratic mandate with 36 percent of the vote, a legal mandate is more accurate since Allende didn't break any laws to get into power. Allende is overrated and this is mostly due to him being overthrown by Pinochet. In the eyes of the left he's a martyr. I do want to state that I don't support Pinochet's repressions and the way he got into power, but his delegation of the economy to the Chicago Boys improved the welfare of the Chilean people.

@@MariaMartinez-researcher no shit average income is deceiving, but compare it to other countries in Latin-America (also comparing over a period of time) and then it is clear that it is one of the best countries to live in. Besides in a capitalist economy you earn money based on the type of work and amount of work you do. Of course there'll be inequalities and differences in income yet everybody still prefers that when prices decrease over time and incomes rise. In Poland this is also the case and they are even more pro-capitalism on average than many Western-European countries. I don't know how rich this elite is you're talking about, but as long as they don't get exclusive rights and advantages through corruption of the state there isn't really a problem with them being rich.

Thanks for reminding that Western economic models and civic rights did not necessarily go hand-in-hand. 😊😊 Pinochet rule could be described as a form of AUTHORITARIAN capitalism. 😁😁 Allende became a martyr partly thanks to the DC boys for insisting capitalism and liberal democracy were one and the same. Allende was a reminder that political liberalism and economic liberalism were NOT one and the same. Allende might not have won big but according to the standards of the DC boys, he got the mandate. This became inconvenient for the DC boys.

My wife is Chilean and the 1973 coup happened on her 10th birthday. According to her, on balance, Pinochet was a net gain. Of course Pinochet’s men went too far - fascists alway do - and killed 3,000. But other dictators have killed many move than Pinochet, and he did stop Chile from becoming Communist, from becoming another Cuba. Pinochet modernized the economy, and public works projects like the Metro and highways also helped. Pinochet rescued Chileans from Communism, and for that, they will never forgive him.

It's about control and if there is a need for that much control it isn't about some ideal, it's about what the dictator can squeeze out of things for themselves. We must always tell the truth to those who continue to live in denial.

Who was the party of the “war on poverty” and who was the party that got us involved in Vietnam, WW1, and WW2? Who was the party responsible for handing control of the money supply over to the Federal Reserve? Who was the party in the 1930s, who enacted laws banning the private ownership of gold by citizens!? And finally, which party wants to repeal the 2nd amendment and deny citizens the ability to defend themselves from a tyrannical government? These are all fascist policies pursued by the Democratic Party.

And what does communism lead to? Happiness? Please. Communism would have been infinitely worse for Chile. Communism leads to poverty, terror, and death. Chile is now prosperous and free. Yes Pinochet was cruel but he did save Chile from a terrible fate

You support him all the way proudly or you justify his brutal authoritarian regime? Besides, both Salvador Allende and Augusto Pinochet are the lesser of two evils.

@@travelinman790 yeah and what happened on January 6th? Not an insurrection unless you call walking around the capitol peacefully with police tour guides an insurrection. A Dem staffer was caught having gay sex in a senate hearing chamber and nothing happened, but a guy put his feet on Pelosi’s desk and he went to jail. Can you say hypocrisy?
