A dictator took power - and kept it - with the support of democracies including the United Kingdom and the United States, through the use of terror & torture. The West chose to look the other way because they had an investment to protect. This documentary uncovers the extent of Western support, using archive footage, expert analysis & personal accounts of torture, and declassified government files to tell the story of Pinochet's uprising, the brutal regime he led, and the Western allies who enabled it all.

a bit hard to talk about a democratic mandate with 36 percent of the vote, a legal mandate is more accurate since Allende didn't break any laws to get into power. Allende is overrated and this is mostly due to him being overthrown by Pinochet. In the eyes of the left he's a martyr. I do want to state that I don't support Pinochet's repressions and the way he got into power, but his delegation of the economy to the Chicago Boys improved the welfare of the Chilean people.

@@MariaMartinez-researcher no shit average income is deceiving, but compare it to other countries in Latin-America (also comparing over a period of time) and then it is clear that it is one of the best countries to live in. Besides in a capitalist economy you earn money based on the type of work and amount of work you do. Of course there'll be inequalities and differences in income yet everybody still prefers that when prices decrease over time and incomes rise. In Poland this is also the case and they are even more pro-capitalism on average than many Western-European countries. I don't know how rich this elite is you're talking about, but as long as they don't get exclusive rights and advantages through corruption of the state there isn't really a problem with them being rich.

@tekinfomedi And … at the end of the day … the ruling class in America loves capitalism more than democracy. We are seeing that clearly now as the choice is being forced upon us in the USA via the proxy decision that’s camouflaging this choice whereby we’re being told it’s about “political party” or “culture”. It’s really a choice about democracy or US capitalism. And the ruling class needs to hide the fact that this is what is at stake here over the next twenty years. Democracy we can lose by giving it away. Capitalism is failing and can be temporarily repaired by reinvesting in vigorous democracy and a wealthy and powerful working class. Ultimately however Capitalism will only continue to function as an authoritarian system as it does in China with a nominally “socialist” authoritarian government structure. Or with an authoritarian fascist government structure as is more likely in western countries. A renewed life under true freedom and democracy and capitalism however requires a far more RADICAL dedication to democracy and power to wage earning working class people. Not a monopolistic oligarchy of rich billionaires who must be removed now and with haste. Their fear of democracy will quickly ruin whatever chance we have to save it, while claiming it is capitalism they are supporting and “communism” they are “protecting” us from. Nonsense. It is our current ruling oligarchs we need to fear. Not each other. Not sharing the massive wealth this great nation can produce when it works with a purpose. It’s the greedy oligarchs who hate democracy and fear change and progress that we must be rid of. Any rich man who refuses to be vigorously taxed isn’t on the side of the people or the nation. He or she is on the side or greed and oligarchy and the maintenance of an aristocracy of wealth and secret meetings and private influence. Freedom flourishes in fresh air and sunshine and out in the open with hard work not moving money around, or dreaming about money or thinking about it all day every day. But I’m thinking about what GOOD it can do for people. And making these plans happen. This is what America used to be about. Democracy and capital and labor working together. Capital left the community long ago and now only plots to serve its own interests and uses labor to serve its ends caring nothing about the people who do the labor, and considers democracy as an impediment, an enemy, even maybe ultimately as a enemy to be permanently removed if possible. Which many of the ruling oligarchs in America have long dreamed of doing, and see in Donald Trump as a unique historical opportunity to accomplish in order to achieve a goal they’ve dreamed of doing for decades; never to have to answer to “the people” about real anything ever again and be able to make business decisions without any government “interference” whatsoever. Democracy must be protected. It’s the great American principle that made the nation what it is and as great as it ever was. There’s been lots of failed rich oligarchies before. There’s never been a democracy as great and accomplished as the USA. It cannot be allowed to be destroyed by the likes of Trump and his phony populism or any of the anti-democratic forces the pro-business oligarchy lines up against it from either political party. The fact is however the GOP is the historical party of choice for the anti-democracy pro-wealth establishment of RULE BREAKERS and NORM IGNORERS when you’re looking at things from the rich versus poor or capital versus labor perspectives. The GOP takes your rights away as a working person, by always taking the side of the rich in any dispute.

My parents were semi apolitical but, almost middle to left ground but never participated with any left party. During Allende’s presidency, trade unions tried twice to take over my parents small factory which they built from the ground up. During the first 4 years of Pinochet’s government, the business took a dive, almost certainly as a result of these economic changes. Although it affected my parents business I still think the country would not be what it is today if this hadn’t taken place. The history of Chile has always been violent no doubt - Pinochet was one more. As far as the Falkland’s war goes, this documentary fails greatly to mention the reasons why Chile helped the Brits. Argentina was threatening Chile since 78. Malvinas first, Chile next was shouted in speeches in 82. History differs as to where you read your information from, who you interview and how you present it. I am yet to see a documentary that shows both sides of the argument. Any recommendations?

Make no mistake: the story of Pinochet is also the story of the modern Republican Party in the U.S. This should be a cautionary and sober tale for America. Dictatorship can happen when you least expect it, and once it does happen, it leaves countless victims in it's wake. A dictatorship never leads to happiness and prosperity. We must always tell the truth to those who continue to live in denial.
@agoodone79210 ай бұрын
If any party is the dictator in the US, it’s the Democratic Party. Who was the party of segregation and Jim Crow? Who was the party of the “war on poverty” and who was the party that got us involved in Vietnam, WW1, and WW2? Who was the party responsible for handing control of the money supply over to the Federal Reserve? Who was the party in the 1930s, who enacted laws banning the private ownership of gold by citizens!? And finally, which party wants to repeal the 2nd amendment and deny citizens the ability to defend themselves from a tyrannical government? These are all fascist policies pursued by the Democratic Party.
