My wife is from Turkey. Her brother got sucked into the legal system there a year ago, one of many companies charged for having goods manufactured by them on a truck someone tried to drive into I think Bulgaria (?) without export papers. Not served, found guilty in absentia. The corruption there has been unimaginable. They are not shy about it. Turkey needs to say least try to vote yourselves out of this. If that doesn't work, it will be terrible.

A military coup almost took place in Brazil during the last presidential election in 2022. It is scary to think how close our democracy was to die. Again. We had a military dictatorship from 64 to 85 and people are starting to forget the horrors of that period. So yeah, talking about how dictators are created is extremely important. Chilean here. You bet the situation was way more complicated than a short introduction can explain. Some interesting clarifications here: - The president at the time was Salvador Allende, a socialist. Yes, there was economic chaos, but not just because there was a socialist president. In a country with an almost medieval socioeconomic structure (to the point that the *Catholic Church* had started on its own a program to donate its lands to labourers so to practice some Christian social justice) the most powerful land, industry, and money owners opposed the socioeconomic reforms - with the help of the USA. Nixon didn't want ""another Cuba"" and ordered to make Chile's economy "scream." Sure it did. - Pinochet *was not* made Commander in Chief of the Army due to chaos - not exactly. In October 1970, the incumbent Commander in Chief, General René Schneider, was assassinated in an attempt to prevent Allende's inauguration. General Carlos Prats was the following in line. He was also a Secretary and VP to Allende. By August 1973, there had been already violent events involving military opposition to the government; Prats assumed responsibility/acknowledged his impotence to rein on them, and quitted his command. Pinochet was appointed in his place due to his seniority - and because up to that point he was considered reliable and apolitical. Reportedly, the other commanding generals (Navy, Air Force, Police) convinced Pinochet to join the coup they were already plotting. After the coup, General Prats fled to Argentina, where he was assassinated in September 1974. - The Chileans victimized by the dictatorship were more than 1,000. Exiled: 200,000. Tortured: 28,400. Murdered/executed: 2,123 (without a trial or martial court). This number includes: Disappeared: 1,469 (1,092 detained and disappeared; 377 executed and disappeared. 150 executed and 40 disappeared were teens and children) The numbers are inexact. Obviously. - The Chilean dictatorship had a happy ending of sorts. We defeated it with our votes. After lots of international condemnation for violations of human rights, Pinochet tried to legitimize his regime: he allowed some political activity, and in 1989 he called for a plebiscite to decide to keep him in power or to call for free elections the following year. He lost. Reportedly, he didn't want to accept the results, but the opposition had carried parallel vote counting. The other generals refused to follow him in another coup, this time directly against the people's will. He conceded. He remained as Commander in Chief of the Army for some time, and as a life-long Senator (immune to prosecution), and despite the efforts of a Spanish judge who sort of captured him in London, he was never prosecuted for his crimes. - Regarding the "line," many people, including prestigious right-wing politicians and personalities, supported Pinochet no matter what - until it was revealed that he was *also* corrupt and had increased his wealth unlawfully. Only then they retired their support. Lesson, many people care more about money than about human lives. Think about that next time you vote.

I think the key part is that conditions are improved for certain people at the expense of others. Usually, the people more likely to support the dictator at the expense of either a minority or whoever the dictator is using as the target of blame for all of the country’s problems. “Hey, everything’s better now that the jews/immigrants/minorities/whatever are gone” One interesting thing about Saddam is that his rule actually benefited a very specific minority, Sunni Muslims. Things were really great for them. Things really sucked if you were shi’ite or the opposition.

4:50 - I was not prepared for the Monty Python reference.... 🤣🤣 As a kid growing up in the 80s the whole Hussain thing was one of the most terrifying things to happen on TV.... I still remember the panic all the neighbors were having and they were all outside talking while I sat and watched all that happen on live TV. If the news wasn't talking about this then they were talking about USSR and how the cold war is still raging.... There was always something scary on the news every day, it got really annoying. SMH
