In pulling threads in that lovely old linen, you also pulled threads of memory in my besotted old brain (whiskey tonight, gin tomorrow) and I suddenly remembered seeing my grandmother, who was a dressmaker from the twenties onward, and my mother, doing just that, pulling threads. From “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. “Thus secured against surprise, he took off his cravat; put on his dressing-gown and slippers, and his night-cap; and sat down before the fire to take his gruel.” “Scrooge closed the window, and examined the door by which the Ghost had entered. It was double-locked, as he had locked it with his own hands, and the bolts were undisturbed. He tried to say “Humbug!” but stopped at the first syllable. And being, from the emotion he had undergone, or the fatigues of the day, or his glimpse of the Invisible World, or the dull conversation of the Ghost, or the lateness of the hour, much in need of repose, went straight to bed without undressing, and fell asleep upon the instant.” So, as one can see, Scrooge was not in a nightshirt as pictured by illustrations, but fully dressed.
@michellebyrom65512 жыл бұрын
Dickens was acutely aware of Victorian sensibilities. Describing a man disrobing further would be unforgivable. To remove a cravat and add slippers means Scrooge must also have removed his trousers (gasp) and possibly even his stockings (bigger gasp). Nightshirts were a new invention over the previously worn shirt as chemise for men. A clean shirt being donned every morning to be fresh for the day.
@gravemarker2 жыл бұрын
@@michellebyrom6551 Victorian sensibilities is one thing, but when a writer states something, he does not mean something else entirely. When Sherlock Holmes puts on his ratty dressing gown and slippers, he was not in a state of undress to a nightshirt. He was described with trousers and even with waistcoat. Living without central heating, it is a good idea to put a gown on after taking your coat off.

Also, remember that thread is wouned so the fibers are going in one direction twisted around each other and in the other being wouned outwardly. The thread being wouned into the thread is going to hold its twist longer than what the opposite direction will and will most likely break so you have to go hunting out the broken thread. if you are lucky when you get an inward wouned thread you might remove it all in one piece. You can test once you have an inch of two pulled by twillering it between your fingers. if it falls apart then you have the end rather than the beginning.

I quite like the shirt at :30. Evolution is wonderful. When I first bought the newly released DVD, (yes, it had the song with Belle. I don't know why the rumour that it did not. Maybe they mean the later releases in 2002 or 2012) I Took so much flack from the small minded for not only liking A Muppet Christmas Carol, but also loving it and showing it to all I knew. Now, there has been a collective evolution to the understanding the all around brilliance of that production. For me, it firstly sounded so odd to hear Kermit not being voiced by Jim Henson, as it was the first muppet movie after his death. Night caps are a wonderful thing, that which, I don't understand the falling away from usage.

I've made many square-cut shirts, from Renaissance to Workwoman's Guide, and I never found pulling threads relaxing! Probably because I was mostly using Czech linen which has rather fluffy thread. The one time pulling threads seemed miraculous was when I got to use a very high-quality Italian linen, and the threads came out whole!! I was a little disappointed that you didn't do the 1838 "nine gusset shirt". The tiny gussets at the base of the neck slit, the cuffs and the hem slits are hilarious! That pattern also included the straps across the shoulders and the larger ones down the front and back at the armholes.
