This came out amazing. And I don't think you could get the same level of quality without that level of work. And I totally understand not wanting to waste real books. But one alternative is to buy dollar tree books (that are often messed up already or unpopular/problematic) and use those for a project like this. That way you're not wasting good books but just stupid messed up ones :3

Hi! I'm a former Disney Imagineer who designed a few stacks of books in Belle's Cottage in Magic Kingdom. Your looks way better. I just started watching your channel with my two tiny craft goblins. Our first watch was of your toothless puppet. At the end of your video, my 4-year-old craft goblin turned to me and said, "We're going to need to go buy some foam." Thanks for taking us along your crafting journeys. We're learning so much and we're inspired by your beautiful projects. I also really love how you discuss what worked and what didn't. It's so helpful and inspiring for my little goblins to see that even experienced adult craft goblins hit failure points, and then we learn to persevere and keep trying.

Fun fact(?)! Adhd people have something called "object consistency," which is similar to, but not the same as, object permanence in babies. We understand that a thing/person contunues to exist outside of our observation of it, but it becomes difficult to impossible to access the information about it when not interacting with it directly. This disconnect is worsened by other cognative pressures such as time limits. So thats why when you ask an adhd person (or sometimes anyone at all) what their favourite movie is they completely blank. Also why door and drawers are the enemy of remembering what stuff you already have

The feminine urge to make a stack of books that's as tall as I am. This is *amazing* and I want. I have no place for such a glorious item, nor near enough materials or time (or ability or patience or energy, or etc). There is also the desire to have some of the paper sections be drawers for the storage of things. As someone with an alarmingly large "to read" pile of books, I was very confused as to why you wouldn't just make a book stack out of actual books. That is, until Rachel explained the goal was to clear out the foamy Trash Stash. This is the craft version of Leftovers Night but with very cool results instead of dinner.
@myladycasagrande86314 күн бұрын
There's also the matter of "desecrating" books. Personally, I'd have a hard time with drilling holes through books, unless they were something like old encyclopedias or those hardbound collections of Reader's Digest condensed books. It just feels weird to damage books (yes, I know that not everyone has the same hangups). A real book stack would also get really heavy before it was anywhere near that height.
@KitOkunari13 күн бұрын

If you want to do more of them, you might consider looking at some of the "used books" for it rather than making the individual books. I've seen similar things made out of sets of outdated encyclopedias and similar that the various libraries, essentially, discard to replace and having different sets adds variety to it. A cloth cover and a drill to go through for your core piece for it. A friend of mine made a lot of those as set dressing for various stage plays. Either wrapping them in newer cloth covers, painting them, or using decoupage layers to make them look different between them.
@bodyandskull755814 күн бұрын
I agree but we all know the internet would be pissed if she used real books 🙄
@TSIRKLAND14 күн бұрын
That could work, it's true. However, part of the purpose of this project was to use up spare materials she already had lying around: foam, cardboard, fabric, etc. Also, real books are heavy, foam and cardboard are lightweight. So it'd be a different sort of project. But for someone who liked the idea and wanted to try their hand at it- using up old no-longer-needed books could give them a second life: not a bad idea!

I showed my book loving bestie the scene in Wicked where they are using books to slide around on the floor and she was disgusted. I can't imagine her horror if Rachel had cut into some. 😅
@seriilyn13 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, though with a more convoluted process of drowning the edges of the pages in glue to keep them together as one piece and then hollowing out the middle of the books. Just using whole books would be much easier, though also very heavy and so not something which could be easily moved around (probably make a nice sturdy side table though?). Another advantage of the foam is due to its lightweight nature it can be placed in seemingly impossibly angled stacks without tipping if the base is heavy enough.

I love this project!!! Making books using up your leftovers from previous projects is genius. It's a great way to stash bust. I think you should do more in different sizes both of books and stacks. Ironically my library at home has many stacks of books. This project is probably my favourite ever.

Years ago, I made a book base for a lamp. Used real old books I got from library store, drilled holes and used lamp rod as the dowel. It turned out cute and my husband loved it. A simple solution for a small project! Thanks for super video.

I’d love it, for her, to not hate the process of crafting in her almost every video :( i’d guess it’s a fast path towards true burnout and you end up not enjoying it anymore at all. Dunno if this is just how it comes across to me or not, dont mean to be nasty or anything, im just a bit concerned comparing these with the first videos i ever saw of her years ago

I think an interesting idea would be recycling some pieces you aren’t into keeping anymore. I dunno how many fabric crafts you have that just collect dust instead of being worn but it’d be cool to see them upcycled or broken down for parts and reused into something you like more!

Fantastical book stack! I like how aged the paper appears from the painting and texturing. This prop would fit in a wizard's study or witch's cottage or mad scientist's lab or eccentric professor's library. As far as I'm concerned, Ferris Bueller is the only character in that movie who even *has* a name.

The bunnies on the fourth book are so freaking adorable! It looks like the stack was just plucked out of a storybook painting ❤

Absolutely captivated by the book ends you painted. So amazingly whimsical.

Cuuuuute! I would have opted for a leaning stack against a wooden ladder so the guests could hang their clothes there and it would be decorative and purposeful ✨

Totally would have been easier to get some books destined for the dumpster from a local library or school, covered in them in whimsical covers, and then drilled holes thru them all to stack on the dowel. For anyone who wants a whimsical book stack, ask around at local libraries or your school districts. Everyone is downsizing in favor of digital and there are a lot of books destined for the dump or sitting in a storage closet awaiting their dumpster day. Source: I work in K-12 and we literally have multiple walk-in closets full of old textbooks no one uses anymore either because they're 30 years out of date and/or because they're digitized with interactive features.

I like your approach of making decore like theater props. The purpous was always to be decorative so it really does not have to be real books. Its much more practical when its foam and wont fall over

As someone who has criticized your "crafter's audacity" before, this turned out so incredible. I will always recommend a plan to crafting before you jump in but you nailed it this time! Great job!!

Hi Rachel! 👋🏻 I’m a rare books librarian and 1) I adored this project and really admire your artistry and resourcefulness, and 2) the looser leather bindings look just like limp vellum bindings to me, so I thought they were spot on, too!

This is a compliment. Your roommate is very Weasleyesque and the staff k of books sealed the deal. Love it 😀

Super cute! To save your sanity, if you make more consider spray gluing your fabric to flat scored cardboard or flexible plastic/foam sheets, spray paint or use a roller then wrap the edges around. You can glue your finished cover to your "pages" like binding a book. 😊
