watching this series for the 4th time. would love to see you do a new series with Colonial Charter and the "more terrrain" mod so you could use a much larger map size

I know this is an older video but I noticed that you always click the pause button. Pressing space bar is much easier than clicking through the interface imo. Also you don't have to click the X to exit each little info screen, just right click anywhere and they will vanish. Overall thanks for the videos! I've learned a lot of the games nuances and they have really helped me out.

very true and very useful! There's also another one less cheaty that prevents people from grabbing coal for their houses, and another one that allows to build pastures, fields and orchards on low slopes :)

Hey Pinstar what resolution are you playing/recording at? If your monitor can handle 1280x720 (or any other 16:9 resolution, e.g. 1360x765 1080p, etc) Then it will get rid of those big black bars on the side of the video. If your monitor isn't 16:9 native you can run the game in a window so it's not all stretched. Really enjoying the series!
@Pinstar10 жыл бұрын
I will play around with my monitor settings before my next recording (Episode 10 has already been recorded) and see if I can implement your suggestions. Technical suggestions like this are very welcome as I'm new to video capture and recording and am still refining my setup. Thanks for the tip!
@TrentosaurusRex10 жыл бұрын
Pinstar Glad to help! Also another tip - always render your video in the same resolution/ratio that you recorded. If you mess with the aspect ratios then it will cause ugly stretching and pixel distortions. So if you record at 1280x720, then render it at 1280x720. But as long as you keep the aspect ratio the same (16:9, 4:3 etc) then it should all be good.

I was thinking when would you be building a town hall? If at all, and if not why?
@pershop49503 жыл бұрын
If you don't need nomads and don't need to look at the stats of your city, then it's OK not to build a town hall for a while. Eg, in this series, it's up to #9 video, so it has been about 4 hours of game time, but he has pretty much got sheep , gatherers, and a few orchards. So it's not terribly urgent to be getting up a town hall to look at those stats.

When will you upgrade your Wooden houses? And what is the best indication it's time to build a new house? Sometimes I get a couple in immediately sometimes a new house lies empty for a time, sometime I get the dreaded single person. How can you tell? Thanks!

I find that having about 50% number of students/children to adults (eg 100 adults, and 50 students/children) gives a good return on teens becoming adults while the adults eventually pass away. Another pattern that can be followed is, half as many homes as there are families. See the stats in the overview page of the town hall stats.

Hey Pinstar! I really liked your crossroads build strat. I tried using this to gain achievements Isolationalist, One with nature and Uneducated. The problem is that uneducated people create a bottleneck at 300+ population. Do you have any strats regarding this?
@knexus50393 жыл бұрын
Use trading for any other things you need, including more of the same things you already make if you need more (eg steel tools in case you can't keep up)

You are progressing faster than I do, but I still think your Forrest cluster is a bad idea. I said it before when I watched the first video of this series, and here's why now that I've seen the output numbers. My way for the first node is Forester, Hunting Lodge, Gatherers Hut, and Herbalist. For a wood cutter, I have the stock pile across the street so the corner of the pile the wood cutter goes to is as close as possible. 1. MY Forester kept a city with more houses stocked with fire wood, and kept a 9k buffer and I bought everything the trader brought every time, even fire wood, cause I set it to auto buy everything spending firewood. I did not have a problem with them clear cutting my forest ring since there was more growing space. 2. My gatherers could maintain 4 workers at full efficiency, so between them, and the hunting lodge, and trading, I maintained a much larger food surplus. No orchards, no animals, no farms. 3. I should have placed my Herbalist outside the ring and let it wander into it, that would have been sufficient, and would have made my Forrest cluster more profitable, will have to try that some time. I had too much medicine. The extra growing/harvesting space you are wasting making houses, stockpile and barn inside the forest circle is definitely not worth the time saved for convenience. you are using 2 Forrest circles to almost keep up with what 1 will produce. The other thing I do way different, is I build stone houses from day 1. I do not make wood houses, I do not have everyone in a home by winter. (as long as you have 1 house before winter, no one will die, they will come inside to get warm, but babies won't happen till you have enough houses). This drastically reduces my firewood consumption. I'm also a fan of building a tavern early, before a hospital. Usually around the time of the first death, so I don't have to make a cemetery. Taverns will use at least one of the gatherers ingredients, so you don't need anything special for it. That complaint done, you are progressing faster than I do, and I am learning new things I will use next time I play. Thanks.

Amazing how far this game goes back. Old comment, but you said "You are progressing faster than I do" and that's why he needs more forest hubs and the little bit lost to the houses and such is irrelevant in the grand scheme. I build even faster then this guy and eventually I need a minimum of three forest hubs with two fully manned forester buildings each, one set to cut one set plant in order to keep up. Even if you don't need as many logs, it's always best to have two forester buildings even if they only have one worker in each. Having each one cutting or planting full time is far better.
@skavies2351 Жыл бұрын
@@marcuslinton310 I use multiple clusters. I just keep mine with as little wasted space as possible like roads and barns. I leave those out side of the forestry circle so my clusters produce a lot more than his do. It's something close to 50% more. All of the buildings in those clusters are mostly reliant on the amount of forestry tiles in their aoe. He likes to put up roads and barns and well and stuff in the forestry killing off roughly 25%? Something like that of the area that you can grow trees in. Let them walk a bit slower, they will still way out produce his set up.
@marcuslinton310 Жыл бұрын
@@skavies2351 You said your forester (singular) kept a 9k buffer while still buying everything you need in the ports and that's simply impossible unless you're building extremely slow to allow the forest to keep up. Now you mention multiple clusters, but again that's not what you said originally so that's what my comment was based on.
@marcuslinton310 Жыл бұрын
Yep, it's an old game and old video, but it's still a great game. I don't buy in to the "gamey" comment about the trade ports. The idea is you can have certain trade ports set to only bring stone, logs, iron or whatever and then set your production building nearby to process the goods. You can also have a trade port for a community that's further down river so they can get what they need instead of it all staying near the other port. Markets do somewhat okay at spreading the goods, but not that great unless fully manned. There is absolutely no reason not to use multiple trade ports, your excuse was silly.
@MotoAtheist Жыл бұрын
To each their own, right? I get tired of the nonsense people like to spew about stuff like trade ports and other techniques. If the game allows it, then it's perfectly valid. What I find most amusing is how they go on and on about efficiency and micro manage every single thing in the game, when it's simply not necessary and such a pain in the rear. Build, build, build and build some more. Having lots of extra houses is not a problem, splitting up families doesn't stop the baby making at all, they stay together and still have kids. But you still see people building in some micro managed controlled method that is pointless. Soon as two people are of age they will find each other and have kids, it's really that simple. The game does not lend itself to slow growth/building, the people get old and you end up in bigger trouble then if you just keep building. Anyway, lots of bad info in most of these youtuber player videos. They build everything right next to each other which forces peeps to walk around all those buildings instead of going between if there was a space left, very inefficient for people who keep talking about efficiency.
@marcuslinton310 Жыл бұрын
@@MotoAtheist Yes, without a doubt a lot of nonsense. Everything about the game is "gamey" considering everyone is walking during a time where animals and wagons were very much utilized. They carry logs and stones by themselves, as if that isn't complete nonsense. They build houses, trade ports, churches out of very few materials and extremely fast, pretty sure that is quite "gamey". They can build tunnels, but for some reason the base game has no flatten terrain option to take care of small mounds that get in the way. So, yes, it's all amusing as you say when people find a few ridiculous things that seem to put them over the edge for some reason. Especially during these times, trading was extremely important and very much a major aspect of every single town. It would not be uncommon to find dozens of bustling trade docks within a town.
