I like the end result, but I thought your first line was looking good. I saw a vid not too long ago where Billy Gibbons pinstriped a fan's guitar on the spot- and he just OWNED it. Maybe some black paint in addition would make the design pop. For a first attempt, I think you did well. Keep at it.

First time viewer. You are a very brave man to attempt something as daunting as pin striping under the scrutiny of a KZbin audience. I'm impressed and you've got a great attitude. We got to watch the entire journey along with all of the mistakes and do-overs. You're an honest man with a great delivery. I'll be back for more. Thanks. Oh, I almost forgot - Nice job!! Very tasteful. Like every good guitar player you exercise restraint and know what notes not to play.

This was a great way to get some practice at doing this. Who knows, you keep doing it, and eventually someone will be paying you to do this for their guitar. This is how things can happen, unexpectedly. Back when it was cost effective to build your own computer, I went to college for computer networking. It turned out, that building a computer was one of the semesters. So I made one for my Niece. Coincidentally, that led to me building one for my son, for Christmas, and it just snowballed from there. The next thing I knew I was making pretty good money building computers for people as a side job. Eventually it became less cost effective to actually build one so the jobs started fading, but it was something for several years. Pinstriping a guitar could be a great side job. It shouldn't go out of style so you just never know. If there was a good pinstriper around here where I live, I would pay to have someone do it if they were decent at it.

1 I'd love to see you do more of this! 2 I think it would probably help a lot to disassemble the guitar first to make it less constricting to work on. At the very least removing the neck, strings, and bridge would be easy and make a big difference.
@CONEHEADDK

A fast striper can do it in a few minutes. Using tons of time dismantling would just ad costs. Better to practice getting around things - or redesign the lines.
@niclastname
@niclastname Жыл бұрын
@@CONEHEADDK Taking off the strings is seconds with clippers, and the bridge and tailpiece slide right off with no strings holding them on. The neck is just a couple screws. It's not "tons of time". Excluding the neck, we're talking about seconds. The neck is also 30sec to a minute _tops_ if you're using a powered screwdriver.
@CONEHEADDK
@CONEHEADDK Жыл бұрын
@@niclastname I can't see, how that would make anything much easier, unless the pin striping was going to be very close to the strings or under them. And I wouldn't dismantle anything, unless there is a good reason for it. You never know, what you might run into in form of weak screw holds aso.

The only other thing I could think of would be to strip the guitar hardware when painting and then you will have a flat canvas to shred on if ya know what I mean.

You did a good job of just attacking the project. There are things you can do to make it easier though. ;) You need to adjust the setup so you can always be pulling the brush towards yourself while making those marks. This will allow you to lock your wrist up and keep your movements at the shoulder and elbow. That adds grace to the lines as you apply them. Think of the marks kinda like you're practicing martial arts... You want long, sweeping motions while you are putting the paint on something... Graceful and sweeping movements that start well before where the brush hits the surface, and sweeping after the brush pulls away. Trying to do that while sitting down, and trying to get it on cam, makes it a lot harder than it can be. :) Good luck!

As someone who has striped as a hobby for the past 10 years, you gotta stripe like Bob Ross painted, happy mistakes. Pinstriping was to cover blemishes or poor craftsmanship in the 50s and 60s. I haven't gotten the chance to strip a guitar, but that is definitely on my bucket list to do.

I know this is an older video, but it's my first time seeing it. Ryan, are you a southpaw? I ask because you play righty so I was curious. Usually you wanna hold the brush in your dominant hand for more control. Like others have said, use an old mirror or a piece of glass to practice on. They say you should do a thousand lines before you even worry about doing designs just to get consistency and control down. But as long as you're having fun that's all that matters 🙂 I hope you're keeping it up as a hobby! You're doing pretty well all things considered and if you get repeatable results you're happy with, all the better! 🤘

buy a cheap mirror and practice on that. but in an upright position. if you can pinstripe on glass, you can pinstripe on anything. Also stripe the guitar in an upright position as well after you practice on glass. takes a lot of time and always use your second hand as a brace/guide.

I recommend turning the neck so it points away from you and prop the guitar up so its at an angle to your body. Right now you are doing a lot of reaching across the guitar, over the strings, that's about a billion times more effort than you should be using to get to the area you want to paint. If you watch pin striping videos you almost never see them going over a line twice. You are getting some nice line weight and points though.
