So happy you mentioned coconut oil not being a miracle product suitable for everything. It annoys me so when I mention to people that it doesn't suite my skin because it clogs my pores and is drying and the response I get is "oh you need to use more if you think it's drying". Sigh..

Exactly!! Huge breakouts on the face & doesn't moisturise skin on the body! I cook with it & that is it! Hate seeing so many skin recipes with it in. There's barely a body butter recipe on YT without it.

I was shocked when I discovered it's comedogenic was a 4...the ratings go up to 5. So wow, totally blown away. I use it very rarely, but prefer not to use it at all. I'll use a light oil...I love safflower (and it's a 0!). it's considerably less viscous than a lot of other oils, so I just change my formula a little (e.g. add more shea or wax). To me coconut just smells really good, but that scent can be easily duplicated. Also, YES on baking soda. Loved it as a scrub until I discovered how important pH is. I actually use pH test strips when a concoction allows me to...not really sure it picks up the pH in lotions. But I know the ingredients and I know their pH... so no biggie. I love your channel...it has really opened my eyes when it comes to preservatives, etc. Sometimes all natural...well, it sucks tbh. Ty!!!

Way to go Marie, can't even tell you the number of times I've clicked on a wonderful "shampoo" recipe and found it is liquid castille soap and essential oil! Or a GREAT lotion that is ALL oils and some eo's, that's it. It's thanks to your beginner's course that I know to pass these right on by. See you can teach an old dog new tricks! I'm learning things everyday about oils, preservatives and additives that make my homemade products truly great for me, myself and I!

I'm not a fan of the DIY that combines store bought lotions, shampoo, etc. For me it defeats the purpose of why I choose to DIY for my family. I have noticed a lot of what you're saying. After doing DIY for awhile (still very, very far from being a pro at it), most of the time I can look at a recipe or idea and know if the combination is going to work out or not..however when I first started "dipping my toes in" there were a few fails from using Pinterest 😊

On Pinterest the worst are the ones that sounds really convincing and so many people actually made it-----its home made laundry detergent, 1 bar (or 4.5 ounces) shaved bar soap (a homemade laundry bar, Dr. Bronner’s, Kirk’s Castile Saop, Ivory, ZOTE, or Fels-Naptha) 1 cup borax 1 cup washing soda. mix together use 2 tablespoon per load. its really cheap to make and it dose save you some money at beginning...... But if you look deeper into it, it become obvious that this will not work in a long run.

Absolutely agree. Lemons/lemon juice has a PH of 2 - 3 which is way too low for skin, and the same is true for Baking Soda which has a PH of 9 which is too high. Safe mixing practices are key!

Girl, Snark is my primary language of choice. lol. I swear social media has caused me to have chronic migraines from all of the face palm moments I have when I hear people doing stupid things with ingredients they don't understand (like a video of peppermint essential oil being placed on the tongue of a very newborn - like under 2 week old newborn this morning). I've learned to just stay in my hula hoop and admit to myself that I can only be me and can't change other people and their interpretations of information. lol. Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of research. I've completely enjoyed seeing your growth as an awesome influence on the soap & bath/body maker community.

Some others misconceptions I notice: soap as a shampoo, "creams" made without an emulsifiers (just mix some oil and some water/gel, maybe some wax and voilà...!), essential oils used without any awareness of the products (good ratio, photosensitivity ecc).

I've been suggesting using a baking soda as an exfolient ON DRY SKIN... then a spray bottle of vinegar to get it to fizz... then shower as normal. Total time on the skin is about 4 min. I thought the alkaline followed by acid a good thing...especially since it is right before a shower. What's your insight on this?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't. There are SO many other physical exfoliants that don't have a detrimentally high pH-why wouldn't you use any of them instead? There's nothing beneficial about abrading your skin with a rough high pH cleanser; countering it with vinegar may help, but vinegar on its own is too acidic for the skin, so that can also be bad for your skin given the baking soda is unlikely to be perfectly distributed-there will definitely be high and low points. Why not just use sugar or salt?

Borax (sodium borate) and beeswax can act as an emulsifier. (I used this in the first homemade lotion I created. Did it work? Yes. Would I recommend it? NO.) Unfortunately, the natural community is also usually terrified of that, too. So they end up using beeswax and tend to deny how horribly it performs...

Great learning lesson for a DIY newb... some things are obvious lol. I was wondering if you could maybe do a diy for deodorant? I, like many others can't use baking soda and now I know why it's so damaging but so many recipes and natural deodorants sold in health stores actually carry baking soda. I am doing as much research as I can for the right recipe with correct ratios and would love to hear your input or even better, see a recipe that you might recommend in a diy video.

I'm still working on a baking soda free deodorant that actually works. I've found a lot of recipes for what are basically just armpit body butter since they don't do anything for odour :( I do not want to publish another one of those! The more "natural" deodorants that I've seen on shelves that don't use baking soda use active ingredients I haven't been able to buy, and if I can't buy them, then I assume most other people can't, which is obviously a problem!

OMG!!!!!! I found a recipe for dark circles from Pinterest , which includes: Coffee + Coconut OIl. So I tried it,put it on for 15-20 minutes, took off remained Coffee and let the oil to stay on my skin. In the morning when I woke up, I saw pores under my dark circles ,on my cheeckbones, really BIG PORES, I have never seen them before on my face. And my dark circles are not getting briter instead they are getting darker. I really want to cryyyyy. I have this dark circles under my eyes,they are really bad, they are not dark as others, they are more dark blue,navy or dark purple,actually you can even see my veins. I dont know what to do,it really looks bad,I cannot even counter it and hide it under foundation etc. Pleaseeeee someone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow... yeah. I can't think of anything about coffee and coconut that would do anything for dark circles. They MIGHT have been thinking about caffeine, which is present in coffee, but it's water soluble, so coconut oil is not a great medium, and coffee is... dark and stains... and dark circles are what we are trying to get rid of haha. This DIY "remedy" sounds so bad that I might even call it a troll-yeesh. If you want to try a proper caffeine serum The Ordinary has a good one for a very reasonable price :)
