When I was growing up we always had a pot of beans in addition to all the other delicious food my parents grew in the garden and my mother prepared. Nothing better than pinto beans and cornbread.. I also loved dried big butter beans…when I was about 10 or 11 years old I had scarlet graver and the only thing I wanted to eat was dried butter beans and cornbread with black pepper. I survived I’m now 83 and still love those big dried butter beans and cornbread. I really enjoy and learn a lot from your programs, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us.

Thanks again Charles. This was my first year to grow pintos. Sadly I did not trellis them and then when we had all that rain for about a week many of them rotted. I also made the mistake of growing them in the same raised bed as my rattlesnake green beans growing across a cattle panel trellis and they all grew as one big mess! Won’t do that again. I used to get so down about these mistakes but now I look at them as experiments.
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
Pinto beans are definitely runner or as I like to say, climbing beans. If you grew them with Rattle Snake Pole Beans then they are probably cross pollinated. That doesn't affect them for eating but will if you wanted to save seeds for next year. I don't look at it as a mistake, rather, I see it as a learning experience or an opportunity to do different next time.

Hi Old Alabama Gardener, I was just shelling beans a few minutes ago before I saw this video! Glad you got a nice pinto harvest. Have you ever seen two different varieties of bean cross if they were planted really close together? Everyone keeps telling me that beans always self-pollinate and don't readily cross, but last year I planted Old Cornfield black beans right next to white Seychelles beans and ended up with seed that is tan and striped and doesn't look like either parent, so I assumed they must have crossed. I saved the striped tan seed and planted it this year, and harvested some yesterday and it is stable, all the seed are tan and striped. Anyway, have a great weekend, happy gardening
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
I believe as long as there are other flying insects, to include bees, cross-pollination can happen. Controlled pollination is how new varieties are developed.You have two years of experience (a year of the cross pollination and a year of planting the cross pollinated seeds confirm that something did happen. We should never underestimate how nature works. Tomatoes are another vegetable that is wind (actually vibration) pollinated. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience with me.

Can you just store them in a jar on a shelf at room temperature? Will they not last as long? Thank you for sharing this bit of wisdom. It was very helpful! I've been growing runner beans this summer for the first time and had no idea how to dry them/store them. I picked one bean pod from the plant last week and tried to dry it in the house but it shriveled up and got squishy so I threw it away. Looks like I'll be leaving them on the plant until the Fall from now on!

Yes, you can store them that way after they are fully dry. Sounds like you picked it much too early. I like to store the ones I will use for next years seed in the refrigerator, because I think it helps with germination.

Thank you! I learned something from that video I didn't know. I have a question. I am in southwest Alabama in Daphne. I am planning my fall garden and have started some seeds.(cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts).The Alabama extension planting guide, the Old Farmers Almanac and the back of the seed packets seem to vary on when to plant in my area. Which is the most accurate so I will know when to plant my winter vegetables?
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
Very good question. Are you asking about when to start the seeds or asking about when to set plants in the garden?
@cathybean40523 жыл бұрын
@@OldAlabamaGardener when to set the plants in the garden. I also have some seeds I haven t started yet like mustard greens so I guess both.
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
I should have asked in my previous comment about your frost date or even if you get frost in your area? Cabbage, broccoli Brussels sprouts and collards can with stand a light frost, so, you can set them in your garden as soon as you have the plants ready. As to pests, worms are bad to attack these crops. There is a spray that I recommend called: Pyola, buy it at Gardensalive.com As to when to start seeds, the package is a good guide and there is a lot of internet sites that will give you that information. The amount of time before setting plants in the garden starting seeds is usually based on last frost in the spring or first frost in the fall, but if you don't have frosts then that doesn't help. So you would have to decide when you want to set plants in the garden and count back from that date the amount of days to start the seeds. If I haven't answered your question, come back here and ask me again, Thank you for watching my videos.
@OldAlabamaGardener3 жыл бұрын
On mustard greens, as well as other greens such as turnip greens and Kale, for my area the issue is always the worms. I try to time my planting so that when the plants are beginning to grow/develop leaves, we have already had a frost or at least cool weather.

Put them dried beans in a pillow case and then beat them with a broom handle or other suitable stick. The seed will fall out of the hulls. Now, get in front of a fan. ..over a concrete floor..and winnow the seed from the hulls. Sweep up the seed and then you can go thru them.
