As a mother with 7 children, 3 medically fragile and one with autism and Down syndrome, hearing that being out of control of your life - not in disorder, but actually not being able to be in charge of everything that happens, and that being a form of living poverty, gave me great encouragement to keep doing what I am doing for the Glory of God. It’s not wasted

2:43:27 Thank you for your humility, Matt, but for me at least you’re mistaken. Matt, I’ve mentioned before in these comments that you and Pints have been instrumental in my conversion. Certainly you have wonderful guests who bring new insights to the faith-and yes, they’ve all contributed as well. But Matt, who you are is a huge part of bringing me into Catholicism. Your gut-level authenticity, your willingness to be raw and real with both guests and your audience-these are things that drew me close to the faith. I have an appreciation for the fact that you, as a devout Catholic, sometimes cuss, that you have a drink and smoke cigars, that you’re a jerk as a husband from time to time-but most of all, you’re always seeking to be better, to draw closer to our Saviour. (I’m from the US…but see what I did there? 🤣) Romans 5:20-21 talks about how our sin can ultimately bring glory to God by allowing us to experience God’s grace. So your authenticity shows how God can use us, as damaged “goods” (you and me, my friend) as an effective witness for the Gospel (Isaiah 42:3). Matt, I consider you a friend on the journey. Thanks for being there, being available, being honest, and allowing God to use you. His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12:8-9). Much love to you, Matt! Fr. Mark-Mary: I love you, man! Your videos are some of my favorites. When I saw you and Matt paired up, I couldn’t tap on my phone fast enough!

This was a delightful, organically flowing conversation. It's so interesting hearing about the life of the order, the growth of faith within it (rocket ship analogy was perfect) and random off-topics that actually reveal the personalities of interviewer and interviewee. I cannot describe the level of respect I have for the brothers who serve the poor. So wonderfully counter-cultural. St John the Baptist comes to mind- a man not fully understood by his time, to the extent that his demise was radical.

@@blueanina1975 classical music is primarily Catholic or at least, Christian. Mozart was Catholic, Beethoven -Catholic (devout, despite what Wikipedia would tell you - he wrote prayers and dedicated his work to God); Vivaldi was a priest, Hayden, Corelli etc etc - all practising Catholics (although they try to diminish their Catholicism). Handel and Bach were Lutheran - Bach was the Kappelmeister of four churches. Their creativity was the result of the transcendence of the Catholic faith. They expressed the beauty of God’s creation. And you cannot listen to Mozart’s Requiem without recognising his musical depth of understanding.

I totally understand what you meant about the poor Matt. I've had a lot of experiences like you have where I have to fight with myself internally. I keep having to remind myself of St. Cathrine and St Faustina, who said we should force ourselves to Handel what disturbs us most. I had a history of helping the poor as a cradle catholic and it continued after I left the church. I don't want to go into detail because God asks us not too. But I've housed homeless in my home before, I've given a jacket off my back, I've donated food. I've taken them out for food. I've given car rides. I don't know how safe those things were exactly. My husband got very mad at me for housing them at home that I've stopped doing that now. But even with all of that I still have a hard time touching them sometimes expecially after I became a care aid and started takeing care of people in hospice. Because they trained us on the danger of germs which just gave me my brain more hurdles to jump through to help the poor. I just had to go to confession a few weeks ago for helping a blind man find his way to a restaurant. He stunk badly and I could tell his clothes were dirty too. I helped him get where he was going but I didn't do it by grabbing his hand because I was worried about germs. Instead I pinched the jacket on his shoulder like I was pinching dirty laundry to move it to the trash or something, and I felt like crap about it for a week and went to confession. Next time, I am going to force myself to hold his hand even if it is gross or covered in something. He deserved that from me. I'm ashamed I didn't give it to him.

Matt, I'm a huge metalhead. But I've been going through the most difficult period in my life and marriage. As I have, I have almost completely stopped listening to metal, and I have turned to gregorian chant and classical music. Two genres which I think any Metalhead would be drawn towards with a true appreciation for the music. All thrash has a deep root in classical music by virtue of virtuosity. Mastery of the instrument. No surprise to me that Dave Mustaine and James Hetfield have both taken a turn towards the virtuous.

56:50 Start of a good talking point that I wish would be emphasized more. I'm over 30 now, but I remember my community taking in a bunch of refugees when I was 12-13 (trying to do the Christian thing). The result was higher violent crime rates, drugs, and overall bad influence to the point that, as an adult beginning his family, my wife and I had to leave. Boundaries need to be set and enforced. Unrestricted giving, even when done with good intention, can 100% lead to evil consequences....I'm still not certain how to rectify my experiences growing up with the reality that a larger chunk of people who recieve aid take advantage of said aid and then proceed to cause harm to the broader community. It's a hard pill to swallow if the ask is to sacrifice your kids safety and well-being for the benefit of people who will end up being direct adversaries (spiritually and otherwise) to you and yours

Matt, I totally relate to the music thing! And I’m replying because I thought I was alone in that too. I respond very emotionally to music, and when I was young, I loved that rush. I was a punker/metalhead. Now those songs evoke memories because they’re seared into my gray matter :) But overall, the only music I find myself listening to is instrumental or Gregorian chant because I notice how much music yanks my emotions around, and thus my thoughts. I just figured I was getting old! Haha

I dont know I think spiritual bypassing looks different for everyone. Like in meditation Mama Mary connecting my miscarriage experiences with her loss of Jesus acctually really helped me heal from that. Granted, I know I had to be in the right headspace to hear that, though. My miscarriage stuff combined with other things that had been going on in my life years ago is what caused me to lose my faith. So when I came back into the faith it was something I tried to stuff down and forget. And its still raw, but Im at a point where it doesnt make me question Gods love anymore so thats good. And I dont think I would of got there without that meditation experience with Mama Mary. I still cant make it through meditation on the sorrowful mysteries without bawling, and if you do see me doing them without bawling its because Im only saying them and not in meditation. Ive learned that people get mad if you cry so that kinda adds a bit of difficulty to prayer. But I dont know how Mama Mary lived through all of that with only Mary Mag and John to help her. She didnt even have Papa Joseph anymore. A lot of her life would of been my worst nightmare. And the only comfort she had was knowing her son was God and in heaven. I dont think that would of been spirtual bypassing for her. And thats what I mean by it looks different. Some people take comfort in the thought of heaven.

Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord God Jesus, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of the Lord Jesus God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, the King Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Holy Passion and Holy Cross be brought to the glory of His Holy Resurrection, through the same God Jesus Christ Our Lord and God. Amen. 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord God, the Holy King is with you' (Lk 1: 28) 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb' (Lk 1: 42). Act of Holy Faith O my Lord God, I firmly believe that Thou art one Lord God, in three Divine Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost; I believe that Thy Divine Son became man and died for our sins and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths that the holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, Who canst neither deceive nor be deceived. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Act of Holy Hope O My Lord God, relying on Thy infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace and life everlasting, through the merits of God Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Act of Holy Love O my Lord God, I holy love Thee above all things with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all good and worthy of all holy love. I Holy love my neighbor as myself for holy love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and I ask pardon for all whom I have injured. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Good Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi The Lord God, make me an instrument of your holy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow holy love. Where there is injury, holy pardon. Where there is doubt, holy faith. Where there is despair, holy hope. Where there is darkness, holy light. Where there is sadness, holy joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be holy loved, as to holy love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal life. The Holy King God Lord, make me a channel of thy holy peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring holy love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring Holy harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring holy faith; that where there is despair, I may bring Holy Hope; that where there are darkness, I may bring holy light; that where there is sadness, I may bring holy joy. The Holy King, God Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life. The Holy King, LORD God, Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord God is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Lord God Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord God Jesus, the King pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Holy Angel of the Lord God, my guardian dear, To whom the Lord God's holy love commits me here, Ever this day, be at my side, To light and guard, Rule and guide. Amen. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May the Lord God, the King rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of the Lord God, the King thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. . O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor, you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue deliver us from all evil, who turn to you with confidence and enable us by your gracious protection to serve the Lord God, the Holy King Jesus Christ more and more faithfully every day. Amen. Salve Regina/Hail Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Lord God Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Holy Virgin Mary. Versicle & Response V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of the King Lord God, the Father. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of the Lord God Jesus Christ. Holy Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in God Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Lord God, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.

I really wish there was a podcast on the charisms because I know almost nothing about them.

The Catholic Talk Show has an episode about the different religious orders

@@johne2815 I'm not talking just about the charisms of the orders that's easy to find. I'm talking about all individual charisms that laity can be blessed with.

@@Ladyoffidelity14 The let's say "classical" charisms of the Catholic latin west which arose in history are Benedictine (and with it Cistercian and Trappist), Augustinian, Franciscan, Dominican, Carmelite and Ignatian/Jesuit, maybe also Carthusian. Look them up and see what fits your heart and soul. The newer charisms that historically are linked to lay faithful are the charismatic renewal and certain ministries based upon family life.

@ralfbettker-cuza7432 And I am interested in learning about the charisms of the lay people / family life since I am not part of any of the orders and given the orders are meant for people who never have kids or family their charisms and mine would be naturally different. Like for example I can't commit to extreme poverty like my patron saint St Francis and safely raise a family (I could live like the third order. But I think you get my point. )

@@Ladyoffidelity14 I completely unterstand that. As a family father I don’t want to raise my family in poverty, as a physician I don’t have to - and hopefully I can still be a faithful Secular Franciscan. Our rule, for example, doesn’t call for poverty at all and it’s approved by the Pope. Lay spirituality mostly is a form of spirituality of a particular charism of an order adapted to the secular life. The Franciscans, for example, were called Lesser Brothers (Fratres Menores) - still their official title - and their main charism in my opinion is not being poor, it’s seeing everybody as equal, everybody as brother and sister, even creation itself. Thus the Franciscan charism is not “working with the poor” as if they were an object of pastoral care but being on the same level with them, no hierarchical understanding of “us” and “them”. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s by far more an attitude than action.
