Daniel Owino Misiani (22 February 1940-17 May 2006) was a musician from Kenya. He was known as the "King of History" in Kenya; overseas, he was known as the "the grandfather of benga", of which he was a pioneer.
Misiani was born in Shirati, Tanzania and grew up in northern Tanzania. His parents were singers, but opposed his choice of a musical career on religious grounds. Nevertheless, he moved to Kenya in the 1960s to be a musician. He first recorded with the Victoria Boys in 1965. The band changed its name many times before becoming popular as Shirati Jazz. He sang mostly in Dholuo and Swahili languages. He is known as a pioneering contributor to the Benga music genre. During his long career he released numerous recordings, with some international releases. He was imprisoned on several occasions for lyrics that were perceived as crossing the line into political criticism.
He died in a road traffic accident at an accident blackspot in Kisumu, on the highway to Kakamega, in a crash between a minibus and a public transport van in which many others were injured. At time of his death, aged 66, he was still an active performer. Misiani, who was polygamous, had two wives (Felista and Beatrice) with 14 children.

This song, via Microsoft Encarta encyclopedia, introduced me to Benga music as a teenager. I always thought the first line was 'You think that we live in a mago hitigi zega'...I knew Kenya was largely English speaking, so I though it was some hodge-podge of Luo and English, and I always thought, 'what's a mago hitigi zega?' LOL

I am trying to find the phrase you are saying, but the song 'piny ose mer' means the 'world is drunk'. Mago means 'those'. He is singing about African leadership going back to chiefdom

we will miss Jasirati forever. The question is, can we protect our elderly musicians. Akech Jabuya, Omollo Gabi, Peter Saoke Jasuna, Omulo Abelo Jakamagambo (preparing a mojor comeback). These are living benga maestros and may revive the luo music then hand over to our youths and not let our music be suffocated by the fast growing weed of directionless ohangla craze.

False. D. O. Misiani was not a musician from Kenya per se. He was a Tanzanian who worked and died in Kenya. Ja-Shirati was actually buried in Shirati, his home town in Rorya district, Mara region-TANZANIA.
@tonneyodhiambo6482
@tonneyodhiambo6482 8 жыл бұрын
He was, together with many others, a Luo migrant into Tanzania from Kenya. So he was a Kenyan Tanzanian. Like Celine Dion who is a Canadian but being a French Emigre, is referred to as a French Canadian. Meaning she is first a French national then a Canadian by virtue of migration. So is Owino Misiani first a Kenyan then a Tanzanian by virtue of migration.
@wachaubani2059
@wachaubani2059 8 жыл бұрын
+TONNEY HILLARY they are not migrants but its the colonist boundary that split the Luo people into TZ, Kenya and UG. Most TZ musicians (odongo mayaka) come to record and release in Kenya because there is a larger fan (luo people) base in Kenya.
@azebba
@azebba 8 жыл бұрын
Dear Magunga, there you have it. Your version is more convincing and seems closer to the reality surrounding Dr. Misiani's identity. We've always assumed that anybody who sings in dholuo is Kenyan. We have musicians like Jackie Akinyi, Prince Kasam, Odongo Mayaka, to mention a few. These are Tanzanians but belong to Luo Nation. We must separate Luo Nation from Kenyan state or Tanzanian state. Others like Asino Osundwa, Mulumbu Jamarachi, Jose of former Limopopo: they sing in Dholuo but are not Luos.

Bill, what you've said could be true and eye opening in regard to the roots of Misiani a.k.a Jashirati. But, where one is socialized greatly determines one's world outlook, and perhaps character.........so, we can that argue Owino was Tanzanian Luo.
