More tears of memories long ago. We had the ready-made toboggan hill in the backyard, and no dozer was needed. I'm sure my mother made cinnamon buns at some point. Homemade bread was a regular necessity with a large family. To this day, I make a mighty fine pecan gooey bun at least once a year. The recipe I use has maple syrup, giving a nod to my Canadian side. I remember the toboggan had one cracked slat from running into a tree at the bottom of the hill. You mentioned an owl. In my twenty's, while snowmobiling with my best friend many miles into the wooded northern Minnesota wilderness, we stopped at the crest of a long hill and turned our machines off to admire the silent wonder of late night stars illuminating the scene before us. Suddenly, a huge white snowy owl swooped down from behind us and glided without a sound between our machines and on down the 1/2 mile slope ahead of us. It was a truly spiritual moment I have never forgotten, especially as my friend passed away a few years later, and I have missed him dearly. My tears today are not of sadness but of joy for having lived a long life with memories of many moments when this kind of life was the norm, not the exception.

Your comment is beautiful, absolutely beautiful ❄️ Good memories. Happiness. The owl swooping down must have been a breath-catching moment-spiritual indeed. Love your comment very much!

Thank you. I'm giving a sigh of relief as I have told the story of the owl many times, and the possibility of repeating myself is very real. As kids, we all chided my father endlessly for repeating often told stories of his life during the depression. At my advanced age now, I've lived the adage "never tell a lie" because you won't remember who got what version. I don't know from one day to the next who has already heard some of my life experiences. Pardon me if you catch me repeating myself. At least I come by it honestly. 😁

There is another polar vortex, and it's gotten colder in Alberta. Fresh baked breads, biscuits and rolls are hard to beat. My (late) paternal grandmother made excellent homemade cinnamon buns/rolls, and amazing homemade doughnuts. Those cinnamon rolls and parker house rolls look so good. Seeing this is like time traveling to days gone by on the prairies of North America. Cheers! 👍👍✌️

Citron is a large, lumpy, thick rind, lemon like fruit. Not as tart as a lemon, and the rind was usually candied to keep from spoiling until used in recipes. Lemon is a good substitute nowadays.

I want to know what my grandparents or dad did in the winter 🤔, when they were kids. My uncle told me his favorite thing to do was skiing ⛷️ with homemade. They took an old wooden barrel apart with leather straps that fit their boots 👢. They went to the snow ❄️ cover hills at the ranch. My brother had a tubuggon until someone stolen it at the ranch. I had a runner slide as a kid. It worked best on iced 🧊 pack snow ❄️. Love ❤️ seeing 👀 you guys having fun.

As a child about as old as your SIX year old, my family still lived near Elgin, Illinois in late 1940s. One sled for five kids, couldn't wait for snow so we could zoom down the hill next to our family home. A slope about 20 or 25 long,I thought was steep. Well long story long....visited in 2019. That biting slope was like the door threshold of Uncle Dans Cabin out 20 or so feet! Ancient little guy snow suit, idiot mittens, two pairs of socks, roses red cheeks of the little children......Finally very cold, Mom would call us inside house my father built, warm and cozy, peeling frost off bottom of windows, warmer by coal fired furnace in basement, or solar heat looking out window, (like drinking tea looking out window). Big old warm air furnace in basement, we would play down there in the winter. Had an old canning factory in our little town that was converted to a LINCOLN LOG TOY FACTO. In the summer we picked up (seconds,broken on the ends) from the "burn) pile, take them home. Played with them downstairs, kept warm, had many happy hours.

Oh what wonderful memories!! 🔥 Finding Lincoln Log seconds from the burn pile, cozy hours by the warm stove. And sledding! A suggestion for you to use your woodworking skills. Make a drying rack, that hangs above the stove. Usually 3 sided, with the wall being the fourth side. But there are plenty of creative ideas. Knowing your woodworking skills, make it fancy furniture-like. Hang it high enough; that nothing gets in the way. So, you might also need to make a step-stool to go along with it. _(Kids should love that.)_ Advantage of such a drying rack; is that heat rises. _(It can be used for more than just clothing. It's good for drying herbs and such.)_ Ps. We nowadays use, and are use to, *_far more_* sugar and spices; than almost anyone in history. So, the amount of sugar and cinnamon; in the original recipe, doesn't surprise me. They may have thought your change to the recipe; as too sweet and too spicy. Interesting Historical Note: There is a cinnamon roll recipe, that _"originated"_ in Lewistown, and spread throughout all of Montana, Wyoming, and other areas. It was spread by the various cowboy cooks, but also a group of women from Lewiston, who married and moved elsewhere, where they then worked in school cafeterias, local restaurants _(like the various Owl and Wagon Wheel cafes)_ and especially at Four Bees... and a famous winter/seasonal menu at Four Bees; was their chili & that big fluffy, sourdough/white bread cinnamon roll. Heck, that was a mainstay at most any local Montana cafe, come hunting season. _(And as far as I know, the originator of the recipe was a Lucy Johansson or her father, a chuckwagon cook, who had homesteaded in Lewistown. So maybe, just maybe, that's where the name of your Swedish Roll comes from.)_ Last places you could get those cinnamon rolls and chili; were at Johnson's Corner Truckstop in NE Colorado, and Cashway Cafe in Broadus. Dixie's in East Missoula _"might have"_ still use/used the recipe, because the chef cook at Tabor's, which became Dixie's, moved to Broadus and opened the Cashway.

@Montana_Ranch_Rescue I don't know but for whatever reason while watching your latest video that song popped into my head . I come from a large family , there were seven of us not counting mom and dad . In the summertime my siblings and I along with our friends from our small town would walk about a mile out of town to a really tall Hill covered in grass . Of course by July the grass was kind of tall . We would bring big pieces of cardboard with us curl them up in the front and write them down that Hill . The grass was as slick as ice or snow and we would get going really fast ! One of many fond memories of my you youth ! Your videos are the best !! 💯

I think the citron would be orange rind
@Montana_Ranch_Rescue4 сағат бұрын
I wondered the same! Sounds like citron could have been orange or lemon, but was actually its own fruit 🤔 Definitely a food from history!
@melissafields337616 сағат бұрын
If you are referring to "citron" it's like a lemon; in flavor and looks. Which back then would have been a luxury. I apologize if I misunderstood what you were saying; my hearing isn't great and the close captions not much help(not your fault okay).
@Montana_Ranch_Rescue16 сағат бұрын
Oh heard right! Thank you-yes, citron 🍋 Why do they call it that and not lemon? You are totally right that it must be what they mean. It appears in a lot of recipes in the Fanny farmer cookbook
@melissafields337616 сағат бұрын
@Montana_Ranch_Rescue Citron is the older, more natural lemon. The name was Latin. Funny fact: name lemon is older than Citroën(citron) 1400's. But when the citrus hybrid into what we recognize today as "lemon " people began referring IT as lemon! I'm just guessing that it had a bit to do with marketing a "new product ". Lol
@teripittman11 сағат бұрын
It's what they use in fruitcakes too

Citron _(Citrusmedica)_ is a large, fragrant citrus fruit with a thick rind that is often used for its zest. It is one of the original citrus fruits and is believed to be the ancestor of all other citrus varieties. In your cookbook, Citron is a powdered form of a zest, not always, but usually made from the Citrusmedica. _(Cheaper were made of lemon, lime, orange, or a mix of all three.)_ I can remember it coming/being in fancy small tins. But then, so did peppercorns, cinnamon, and most all spices. Once empty, you'd take your tin to the store, and get it filled up again.
@Montana_Ranch_Rescue10 сағат бұрын
Fascinating! …I have never encountered it in any modern cookbook. But it appears repeatedly in these late 1800s/early 1900s recipes 🤔 Total unknown for me. I knew you would have insights into it. Cheers, friend 🔥
@michaelwittkopp33799 сағат бұрын
@@Montana_Ranch_Rescue You can find it still as _"Citron Zest powder."_ Just if you can find it from the actual Citron fruit is another story. Citron zest powder vs lime or lemon is that while they all three have that citrus thang, Citron is also reminiscent of coconut.
