Use this as inspiration for what's possible. Start small, focus on the basic skills of beat-matching and song structure, then experiment with different transitions and work your way up. It's easy to get lost in videos like this, then try the same thing only to be disheartened when you subsequently fail and lose interest. The ultimate goal is to sound good and direct the crowd energy, doesn't matter how complex or simple your set is.

Excellent high energy set! What is your thought process when your creating the Sunday skills mixes? Your track selections are very interesting in a good way. Also, when you are performing your mix routines are the transitions pre rehearsed or on the fly? As always, thank you for sharing this awesome video!

The mixes are pre planned. As for the transitions between each track, hot cues are prepped so we know how the mix is roughly structured but the transitions may vary slightly each time. Like effects or any cutting and looking etc is mostly done on the fly. The thought process comes down to a few elements really. I usually just pick a place I want to start then look at what other tracks in my library work in key and get ideas that way. Or sometimes I want to showcase a certain feature on the equipment so the skills are based around that. Sometimes it’s a technique like mixing between genres I want to highlight so the mix is more focused around that. All just depends on my mood at the time haha.

You know what man i always tell people and videos like this definitely back up my theory, you dont need the biggest baddest gear to make bomb ass dj mixes haha. This guy rocks the shit out of this mix using the DDJ 400 for crying out loud! i have dj'd using big bad gear but i am trying to make a statement so i use a beginner dj controller for my gigs just to show people you dont have to have very expensive gear to rock a club or a party or a bar. You just need your skills a controller and a laptop. Awesome freaking mix dude. Keep up the good vibes!

We can't put a specific time limit on it as every DJ learns at different rates. Once you're confident with the foundation skills of beat matching and basic mixing all the creative techniques can be picked up relatively quickly with lots of practice. The hardest part is combining them all in a short fast paced mix like this. Just remember that being a DJ isn't about the end goal but the journey. Take the techniques we teach in the courses and apply them to your own music and creativity! That's when you will come up with your best ideas and mixes.

The DDJ-400 has a scroll knob at the top to cycle through your music library in Rekordbox, plus two “Load” buttons (one for each deck) you just press one and the highlighted song will load. Happy mixing!
