well I picked this unit up about 5 months ago...I went from a serato ddj sx to this beast and boy is it a beast. I've only done 1 gig with it...im mainly getting use to rekordbox and learning it as well as putting all my music on it. .I do love how I can take my computer to work(I work midnights) and add all my hot cues and basically dj without the unit. something you cant do with serato.

The Dennon Mcx8000 has two large screen on it , works with serato & Engine flawlessly. It can be used as a standalone, but I perform the options of using a laptop . If my laptop ever fails then all I do is flip a switch and continue DJn like nothing ever happened. 👍👍👍👍👍

Another thing to consider when choosing between the SX/SZ and the RX/RZ is that Serato supports plug and play DVS with the controller. You can put turntables alongside your SX/SZ, plug them in to the controller and then you have full DVS. Now, Pioneer have promised DVS control in the future but will it be as reliable as Serato's? But having said that, I agree with Phil, that Pioneer have a seamless system. You can use your laptop at home with a controller like the RZ, prepare your music with cue points etc... But then use the export function for when you need to go to the club, because let's face it, Pioneer nexus equipment is in all the big clubs. A great review btw!!

Had a go of one of these when I upgraded from my sx. I found the software a big laggy. ( could of just been the computer it was hooked up to I suppose ) I was prepared to take a chance so I went ns7 3. I am now 3 months down the line and happy with my choice I'm not a scratch dj but I did learn on turntables all those years ago and being able to mix in a similar fashion gives me a warm feeling inside. Not sure if the younger generations would get the same feelings but for me it was like coming home😉

Great review! Price point seems a little high to what you are receiving out of the box, but part of that may be the Pioneer name. I'll be sticking to my Kontrol S8 and Traktor! Also.. "I've never heard anyone make the slicer sound good." Had a good laugh. Often a time in the bedroom I'll mess around with it trying to find a use. It only ends in disappointment. Maybe I'll make it my goal this year to finally find a reason for it.

Hey Phil I haven't spoke with you in a month or 2 and I just wanted to chime in on your video. It's a very well put together overview and that's nothing new when it comes to your videos. That being said I wanted to address a few things about this controller and Pioneer. I really think it's going to hurt Pioneer sales trying to force DJs to use only their software. They may be the industry leader in controllers but I have no doubt their sales will go well below their projections on the R series. Serato and Traktor are the 2 industry standards when it comes to software that so many of us have come to rely on in the industry. The fact that I can't use these controllers with any of these other softwares alone will make me not even think about buying this controller. I have read many complaints about the direction Pioneer is trying to force DJs to go when it comes to their new series of controllers and CDJs. I would say this would have been the perfect controller if the screens were built in and USB slots available and most importantly allowing us the consumers to decide what software platform we wish to use. I would love to hear your response. Have a great 2016 to all you guys at Digital DJ Tips !!!!

Hi Phil, excellent video as always! I just made the switch in hardware and software from Traktor. I had a Traktor S2 MK2 and upgraded to a Pioneer DDJ-SX2. I watched this video as part of my buying decision and thought that this controller was a bit more than what I really needed (I'm a mobile DJ - mostly weddings), so I went with the SX2. In any case, moving from Traktor software to Serato has been more painful than I originally thought it would. There are simple things that I was used to in Traktor (like saving and recalling loops for example) that are way more cumbersome than they should be in Serato. Out of frustration, I tried Rekordbox under a free trial and I really like it. However, now I have to consider if I'll spend the additional $129 to buy Rekordbox, or if I just get used to the things I don't like about Serato since it comes with my hardware. Any chance of you guys doing a comparison between Rekordbox dj and Serato dj in the near future? I'd love to see that. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion Mario, we'll consider it! The nice part about having the SX2 is you have a choice between the two programs (whereas with a DDJ-R series you'd be limited). If you want to stick with Serato DJ and learn the ins and outs of using the software, we have a course called "Serato DJ Made Easy". However keep learning about the two and let us know if you decide on one :)

They are soundproofing, just some foam and such purchased from a local hardware store and constructed to later be known as "Sexy Pyramids". Rokit monitors are great, we like 'em :) Would say opt for the 5m cables just in case

For my home studio, I need a controller that applies EQ/Filters to external sources like turntables.........I saw that the DDJ SZ gives me that ability (thanks to your reviews). Phil great review. I need your help though. I've just sold my 2000s nexus and 900 nexus ready for the nexus 2 range. After 15 years of pioneer equip this is the first time I've stumbled going for the nexus2 upgrade. I will only be using the gear at home firstly. Always loved the top line pioneer gear and to a certain point the money for the new stuff is not an issue but I have to admit it's getting a little silly with the asking prices. This is the only alternative I've ever been taken by but wonder if being used to the nexus range I will regret something like this over the new nexus2 range. I say money is not an issue but when you look at 5000 compared with 1500 for this something seems to get the mind racing. Honestly what do you think a 2000 900 man would feel using this. I would want 3 cdj2000 possibly and with this have the 4 decks does massively appeal also. Honest thoughts please mate. Keep up the hard work. Great reviews.

We haven't fully reviewed the new 2000NXS2 or DJM-900NXS2 yet so it's hard to say for certain (currently awaiting review samples) - I think the DDJ-RZ is a great controller overall, and if you like Pioneer gear/Rekordbox, then I'd say go for it. You would save yourself some money (even if it isn't an issue). Can I use the ddj XP 1 to activate the record feature on Rekordbox. You'll be able to grow into it which is a positive but it's easy to get overwhelmed as beginner, something like the DDJ-400 is a great starting point. Not too expensive so if DJing isn't for you it's less to lose and pretty much has just the essentials

Depends how you're recording, there can be a lot of links in the chain. For the best quality simply hitting record within the software is your best bet!

Not true. the R will work with Serato, but you may have to set the controller parameters as a MIDI controller instead of just plug n play with the functions already being assigned. the R series has the added benefit of the Rec/function buttons for the Rekordbox sequencer. It also allows you to change the "oscilator" sample/sounds which the S series does not. Add the new Numark screens to either the SZ or RZ. Then again you may want to look at the Denon MCX8000 if you're going to go the Serato route which has 2 built in screens, 1 over each player. I would like to believe that the MCX8000 will work with Rekordbox. It does work with Serato and it's own Denon Engine software.

Question: How can you change the osculator sampler sounds in the software?

+DJ MJM Good question, look for the OSC sampler section on the RZ, find the part labelled "source", and from there you would use USB A (soundcard A) or USB B (soundcard B) - essentially 2 Rekordbox libraries that allow you to change the samples in that section from within the software :)

No Traktor map for that one. I use Traktor and i like that controller but no decent map for it. I wold like to try Rekordbox but also want to have Traktor in case i dont like Rekordbox :(

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm in doubt which one to buy... I'm not married to Serato of something like that, and I'm looking for a way to get comfy with the layout of the nexus series like you explained. But the XDJ's are quite a few pounds cheaper than the DDJ-RZ series. Short: I'm thinking about buying the XDJ-RX to be honest. What will I miss out on (except 2 extra mixerchannels).

+Kere Amohau Mostly you don't get the sequencer hardware controls with the SZ, and the RZ integration with Rekordbox DJ is spot on. Though you're right, they're very similar :) If you want the option to choose Serato and Rekordbox, then go with the SZ

After Pioneer stopped updating bagy Pioneer XDJ-R1 i will won't buy a new one, no trust in firmware updates from Pioneer. They just sell you a unit. Make a new one and leave you with old unit with lots of bugs
