Pioneer DEH-80PRS THD Test Part 2 USB Android iPhone CD

In this video, we try 4 different sources with 3 different files to see if there is a measurable difference in voltage and THD measurements. We use a USB thumb drive, iPhone 6s Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 4, each with 128 and 320kb MP3's and uncompressed WAV versions of a 0dB 1kHz test track. We also used the standard DD-1 test disc with the uncompressed WAV track for comparison.

I have been waiting for this video for a while. I bought this head unit after watching your first review on it. I have only played 2 cd's in it because who listens to cd's anymore lol. I usually run mine at 50-55 volume depending on the song, as 55 is where i set my gains from. Never been happier with any other head unit in my life.

There are a few quirks with the 80PRS...volume takes WAY too many turns to get loud and quiet, build quality is cheesy, user interface could be better, etc. But yeah, overall, it's pretty good.

I've got the dehP8mp, and been rocking it for around 15 years. It's not the highest end premier, but the sq is great, and reliability is rock solid. It is an absolute shame pioneer discontinued premier.

@@wal I managed to get about 58-59 but the SLA was on +3. The bizarre thing is that when I connect it up to my amp, I have to turn the volume right down. It's a JBL GTR 7535.

Nice to see this type of test done - after all, garbage in, garbage out... :-) I'm definitely looking forward to hearing your thoughts on SQ (and expanding my mind). As much as I love loud bass for certain tracks (like in my old skool DnB tracks), I value SQ a hair more - the devil to me is all about the musical detail.

Man I came up in the car audio work starting around 1994. Working in the shops until 2003 or so, I honestly believe that I saw the peak of overall quality of components and the beginning of the decline. Sure, good stuff is still out there, but by and large, the masses have no interest. Sure, a dang 5K amp can be had on the super cheap these days, but it’s just not the same. Here’s to the old school. 🤘🏽

Bro this is such a great video, thank! But i got just one question. Did you adjust the SLA settings before the test? Because I saw another video where the voltage was 2.4- 2.5 volts on max volume until they turn the SLA levels +3 on almost all the input methods. BigDWiz I see it as a matter of convenience. Its right on the front so its easy to plug in quickly and some phones have junky Bluetooth programming so they don't auto connect well, not to single out any phone manufacturers, LG Stylo 2.

@@alphaomega8373 it is true what you are saying i had a clarion745 which i used on my deh6700bt but then i upgraded to an 80prs and realised the eq was giving me a whole heap of distortion. i ended up going straight from the deck to the crossovers and realised i wasnt getting any distortion anymore. Guess these new head units dont need an eq everything is built in. unfortunately i have to leave it mounted because i dont want a half din hole in my dash .

Your bench test in a way confirms but blasts what I thought I knew- that CDs and mp3's are cleaner than SiriusXM and FM.I wish you would have used those sources in your test.I honestly thought there would be a spread between WAV and MP3, but there really isn't.I also thought Alpine had cleaner head units than Pioneer. Maybe I am wrong again on that count as well.

I loved that 80prs I got rid of it and replaced it with an Eclipse cd7200mkii . The 80prs had a more seamless interface but the eclipse sounds better imo.

what's the Sound Level Adjuster Level on these tests? I saw on a different video, it only put 4,9 V on USB with a SLA value of +3. Does the preamp value have to do with the Digital Attenuator setting, which on your video is set to LOW?

I know its fair few years older, but I wonder how my trusty P9600MP stands up to this model. Over the years, Pioneer have dropped many customization features, they use to include even in 7xxx, 8xxxx series, and then brought a few back into their top end only units. I've also recently acquired a keh-p8200rds (cassette) with external DSP unit and keh-p9700r. I wonder how they stack against modern systems.

I did test the amp, but it was unloaded and measured 0.7% THD at full volume 62. This is honestly not a valid test though as you really need speakers "loading" down the amp to get a true measurement. That's why I didn't show this result.

a question regarding the deh80prs, when used as a threeway network through RCA outputs is the graphical eq still useable ie if I have lows and highs at +6 and mids at -24 will the eq aloow me to lower the mids by a further -12 db thereby theoretically creating a 48db gap between my mids and the highs and lows, please do not reply unless you are 100% sure. thanks

Can you do a setup and tuning rundown? I just installed one on a skar 4 channel amp in network mode and it is clean but I'm not blown away. Maybe my components suck? I set my crossovers based on the manufacturer specs on the mids and tweeters. Auto eq and time aligned.

I think this test would be more meaning full done at a few spot frequencies. Id suggest 100Hz, 1Khz and 10Khz. The higher frequencies are where the format differences will start to show. Ive been comparing CD to a USB wav uncompressed RIP of the same disc on this headunit and I can definitely tell a difference. CD is better.

+BigDwiz Hey BigD i'm using this unit in my car and using only the pre-outs in 3-way mode. Can you tell me how can I set the gain level for my high frequency amp as the HPF on high frequency channels doesnt go any lower than 800hz and cant be turned off/pass also like the LPF of the low channel. I used 50hz tone for tuning the low/sub frequency amp and 1khz tone for the mid and high amps.

Is There a source level adjust in network mode. I can't find it in network mode so I can increase output voltage. I'm only getting 2 volts at maximum volume at 1 kz

Power down unit, press and hold in volume button. There are additional setup items in this mode. There is a source adjustment, but I get the same voltage using both settings.

When you dyno a amp.say your using a radio that has 2volt preamp outputs and say amp made 500rms@1ohm but test same amp with radio that has a 5volt preamp output will it produce more wattage at same@1 ohm load...only difference being 2volt preamp vs 5volt preamp????

BigDWiz I've spent about 8 hours over the past week testing various decks in my own system. nex 4100 from Pioneer. Kenwood 9903s and an alpine w960 hdmi. from just a sound quality perspective that Alpine was the hands-down winner. a person just has to ask themselves if they can live with the rest of it. I bought one and as much as I liked how easy the Pioneer was to use and a lot of the features of the Kenwood . at the end of the day I'm listening to it. the pre out section on that Alpine is much more detailed. Much better tonal balance. it also had the lowest noise floor. in tracks like life is too short you can actually hear Too Short breathe and it sounds accurate. neither the Kenwood nor the Pioneer could touch that. they both added a little bit of their own color. the Pioneer being the most noticeable with a very distinct top end roll off and kind of rough 2-4khz reproduction. oh before I forget there is another honorable mention. The Sony xav-ax100 it's an all multimedia receiver but honestly it does not sound that bad . I would prefer it over the Pioneer or Kenwood. I would have never thought that would have been the case going in

no, it is essentially the same as plugging your phone directly into the amp, the rca's are just a common output for all the inputs(cd,phone etc.)
