Pioneer DJ Announces the DDJ-1000SRT. My THOUGHTS on the release and should you buy it?

Pioneer just announced the DDJ-1000SRT to go head to head with it's Rekordbox brother. Is it worth moving over? Should you buy it?

I have to say I’m one the those D.J.s that made the switch from Serato to Rekordbox because of the DDJ-1000. At first it seemed like way too much stuff to learn. But once I really got into it, it was more of a question of why haven’t I made the switch sooner? With all respect to Serato (Yes... I know when sum1 says “with all do respect or in this case with all respect” it’s usually followed by something less than respectful. But in this instance, it’s not.) I have to say Rekordbox DJ has a bit more to offer. To begin with it offers double the Hot Cues, another thing I really like and would like to see in Serato is Memory Cues, with Memory Cues you can mark spot in a track you’d like to jump over for example. Just those two thing alone are a couple of thing things that make it a bit more attractive to me personally. Not to mention how Rekordbox DJ has a built in Lighting Mode automatically generated illuminations created by an algorithm that detects the phrases in tracks, that being said you do need an interface use it though. Long story short Rekordbox DJ is awesome! I also want to make it clear I do still use Serato sometimes and it’s a good software. But I can honestly say I will not be getting rid of my Rekordbox DDJ-1000 for the SRT version. If it would’ve been available when I first bought my 1000 I would’ve bought it for sure, because I was a die hard Serato user. But the reality is obviously it wasn’t, and because of that I’ve learned how to use Rekordbox and love it. Terry thanks for this video on DDJ-1000SRT.

I agree also, that was one of my main decisions when I purchased the Pioneer ddj sz2 , I was so disappointed when there was no "dual support" for that unit, meaning as with the Pioneer ddj sz, sx, sx2 they were compliant to use with Rekordbox and Serato. After seeing DJ Cleveland Terry Bowens honest review on the use of Rekordbox, really had me thinking of just purchasing the Pioneer DDJ 1000 and start using Rekordbox, but here we stand looking at the arrival of the Pioneer DDJ 1000 SRT and I'm shaking my head and yes again will be buying the SRT version. Again we are REAL DJ's we all look test take apart our equipment rebuild it to our feel and use all versions of equipment not because some "superstar" dj endorsed it because we collaborate with each other on equipment, music and culture. It is very informative to see DJ's like DJ Cleveland Terry Bowens, DJ Tlm, Pri yon Joni, and many others. Brings me back to the days when us 1980's DJ's had those talks about Gemini, Realistic, and Numark mixers and how to make the faders looser with clipper oil or prior 1200 purchase how we scratched using a 45 and wax paper to pull off scratching let alone the "finger pitch style" blending on turntables that had rotary pitch control. No sync just our ears and crowd vibe. We have come along way from carrying 17 crates or a van full of records to a flash drive to streaming. When I mention "Real DJ's" that is for all of us making sure we as DJ's stay in the loop with equipment that we use, past present and future.

Cleveland, thanks for your honest reviews. I already have a couple of DJ controller's (Numark NS6, Pioneer SX2 and beyond). I've been considering the DDJ-1000 SRT also. Those DJ equipment companies should definitely be sending you product. I appreciate your opinion's and reviews.

I bought the ddj1000 and was using serato and not rekordbox. I wanted the 1000 and wasn't concerned about the switch. Since using rekordbox I've had no complaints. I feel that if the software is proven there shouldn't be a problem switching. If ur a dj your first priority is being able to play music and move the crowd. The bells and whistles of the software shouldn't be a priority. The switch was simple and easy...I still have serato for my smaller controller denon mc4000 and going back and fort is no big deal. I actually like rekordbox better..but I would have never known if I didn't try it.

I have the RKB version and I’m getting the SRT. I’ve been a Serato user since 2005/6 and I’m just used to it. There was no real problem with RKB as I used it before getting the 1000 to set up data sticks to use with CDJs, but was just never really got used to using it as a controller platform and therefore was nervous to play out with it. I brought the original ddj-1000 because I watched your video comparison with the sx3 And I really love it so thank you! The str is the same and for someone who have never used serato or rekordbox It will be the same thing I mean both of them are excellent people often says that one is better than the other but it's just because they don't know how to use it so if you are thinking wich one to buy ... Is the same! So you can choose it thinking what play, cue, etc. Color you like more. Because is the only hardware difference between them

Think I'm still gonna get an SX2 and practice on a DDJ-400 if I ever need to practice for a club performance. SX2 works with Rekordbox, Algoriddim and Serato of course. This is a nice looking controller though. And really, for Serato DJs who want something close to a Nexus setup, this is it.

I used serato for about 7 years until I bought the 1000 2 months ago. I don't think I would swap back now. I hadn't realised how lazy a DJ I had become relying on visual aids to cue up beats. Them mini waveforms which I at first thought were cool have removed me a little from feeling the music. Using Rb and having to line up the beats by ear again makes me feel so much more involved with the music as opposed to someone on the outside listening in. I know this may sound a little weird and esoteric but I truly feel more of a DJ using Rb. Also being able to simply export to USB for them cdj moments is a God send. So no I shall not be moving back to serato anytime soon. Just my experience, my honest opinion 🙂

@@supremebeme ​I don't use Rekordbox. I use VDJ and VDJ plays 720 and higher resolution videos with no problem at all. You don't have to do anything special. Just load the video and play it. That's all there is to it. It's as smooth as butter.

I purchased the DDJ-SX2 and two weeks later they announced DDJ-SX3. Of course I returned it and got the DDJ-SX3. I didn't like the touch sensitive jog wheels on the SX3 so I traded for the DDJ-1000 and now this. For now I'm on the fence about the new SRT but I'm starting to wonder does this ever end. SMH

I have wondered for awhile if they have plans for a “DDJ-2000” (hypothetical name I made up) for Rekordbox. I imagine it would have stuff like DDJ-RZX screens but everything else like the DDJ-1000. Maybe even have the Rekordbox DMX lighting box built into it too.

Jonathan Sims To be honest, I may do a review on the S9. I don’t personally think it’s worth buying new now. There are too many limitations with it. The new mixers offer much more. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great mixer but I don’t know if mine died right now if I would buy another one, or look at alternatives.

I have no doubt we’ll see a ddj800srt soon. They have to include the 2 ch soon. I’m not a fan of 4 ch controllers/mixers. My main gripe with Rekordbox was the latency and usb buffer with scratching was not on point like Serato. I bought the ddjrb and sold it for the sb2. I just couldn’t get the latency good enough no matter what settings i tried it was very digitized and gardbled audio. That was the end of Rekordbox for me. It may have improved since then but It just didn’t compare to Serato at the time imo.

First off, I have nothing against Serato and I am glad Pioneer came out with the DDJ 1000SRT. When I learned how to DJ, I used Virtural DJ and now Rekordbox DJ. I plan on getting the DDJ 1000 but for Rekordbox only. The reason is I have gotten accustom to the software and don't feel the need to change. Cleveland Terry and I both agree on the reason Pioneer came out with this version after two years. To compete with Denon Prime 4 and two give Serato users what they wanted. It is a smart on Pioneer but I like CTB say the writing is on the wall. The next DJ hardware Pioneer comes out will only be for Rekordbox. If you want the hardware, you must convert to Rekordbox.

I personally don't see what the BIG deal is about this controller. I own the DDJ-SZ2 & 2 Technics 1200's with a Pioneer S9 mixer. In my opinion, all the info on the jog wheels is kind of cheesy. As is, you have dj's staring at the laptop and now they're going to be staring at the jog wheels? Just my opinion.

Personally, I liked Rekordbox when I used it. The beatgrids were super accurate! Serato’s always has to be adjusted(depending on record pool). The issue is, I work with a lot of “dinosaurs” who broke into the digital dj world using “scratch live”. Naturally, they transitioned to Serato DJ Pro. As someone who’s relatively new to DJing, I needed to learn to use Serato as it was the industry standard. I regularly fill in for DJs at clubs, and all(but one) use Serato. The DDJ 1000 SRT was a quick purchase for me.

Base on the professional performance abilities, the rekordbox version shines a little more. Don’t forget you do have a sequencer for on the fly drum kits and crazy beat making on the ddj1000. Effects are on the pads and hardware to create Clever eq effect. XP01 add on to use my favorites button (silent cue). Like you I am confused that the ddj1000 was not just unlocked for Serato. That would of made more sense and money wise it would save the company in parts . S9 sells allot of units cause it works for both. Crazy

Cleve, you should do some research and do an episode on some of the likely buyers of Pioneer DJ. Care to speculate on what buyers/companies might be a good fit? Me and my homies have been tossing around names like Apple (as part of the Beats division), Harman International (which I would hate, as the group is now owned by Samsung, for quality-control and product interference reasons), or Behringer 's MusicTribe group , which I would also hate.for the same reasons I gave for Samsung. Let's hope it's not another ruthless profiteer group like current majority owners KKR group.What do you think?

I prefer library management in Rekordbox over Serato. It just feels more intuitive... but then again I manage my library in their file folders in storage altogether. I like VDJ a bit more because I can play directly from my source folders. Simple. I'd disagree on one point... Pioneer already has a dedicated Serato controller... the DDJ-SX3... so it makes complete sense for them to be pushing their own in house software with their hardware... it's better business sense.... I mean Serato users wh have an issue with it can always go to another hardware developer....

My answer is I will sell my DDJ-1000 and buy the new SRT. I hate using Rekordbox. Takes too long to change tags when I’m prepping for a wedding and no mixed media crates in Rekordbox has been terrible for my club gigs because I play videos and occasionally play a “non-video” song and have to look in multiple crates. Horrible workflow.

DJs be careful what you ask for...I’ll compare it to cellphones. Outside of the US you buy your phone, its unlocked and you pick up a chip from the carrier(s) of your choice. In the US we are used subscribing to a provider, buying a subsidized phone in exchange for a “cheaper” But the devil is in the details bc in both cases you essentially pay the same price for devices and plans just in different ways. How does it relate to DJing? Well unlike cellphone plans DJs by and large aren’t used to monthly subscriptions to DVS software. Lately they’ve made the case for it with Club Kit at Serato and Rekordbox (VDJ being the most popular software to do). What’s it gonna look like when all hardware is universally compatible and to use the software despite spending thousands on you’ll need to pay monthly to use it? The answer...like a cable subscription 😂.

True I was agreeing with you saying Pioneer needs to send you some gear since you are one of the true DJ's that give an honest review, dj'ing has never been defined by gear it is defined by the love of being a DJ. I still wish I kept my first pair of 1982 Sony direct drives and the Clubman mixer.

Pioneer had a good run but they're over. Denon makes better hardware, and I know you shill Pioneer, but there's a reason Pioneer sold 'DJ EDIT: and their pro kit is literally half price - while being better in every way, non-biased.
