I am not a tech support line... I take the time and effort to post these videos with the expectation that people will actually watch them. But too many people totally ignore the video and just head straight to the comments section to ask questions which a few minutes spent watching the video would've answered. I know I may sound bitchy here, but this has been a repeated problem and it's starting to get on my nerves.

You do some great videos covering these entry level turntables. You know there are people like myself that want a reasonably decent turntable but don't want to faff about balancing tonearms and moving belts every time to change speed. I recently bought this turntable on your review and I don't regret my purchase. It sounds great and has no problem playing any of my records. The stylus can be notorious for attracting alot of dust but if you keep it clean it works great.

I explained it in the video that this turntable has a built-in pre-amp. And the sound quality is actually better than several more expensive turntables I've tried!
@cuoresportivo155

Since the platter and motor isn't anything special (neither in a good or bad way), nor is the cartridge or tone arm, I suppose this shows what matters is how the tone arm and cartridge + stylus work together. Since the pre-amp is built in, I would expect the impedance and capacitance would be spot on aswell, which isn't always the case if you use an external, or another cartridge. My issue with these turntables ( I have a Dual cs410 version) is that it seems the speed of the platter is very dependant on the belt condition. Pitch control would solve that, but the newer ones can't have that. Another issue is they feel and look cheap, but that doesn't affect sound. My main table is a technics SL-2000 now, a manual version of your SL-1900 for the most part. It solves all the issues I have with my dual, but of course it's fully manual so more involved.

Thank you so much for spreading a good word about this turntable 👍😊 I got this one for my birthday from my granddad in summer 2019 and I am happy about the way it works and the sound it produces - very soft one with a fair amount of bass ✊

I know this is an old video but think you just solved a problem I have using a 1997 990 with 1977 Pioneer SX 780 Receiver. Got this set up for my 12 year Grandson. Being that I am 70 I hooked up turntable to phono input. In my day there was no turntable with its own pre-amp. Thanks,
@vwestlife
@vwestlife 14 жыл бұрын
@UltimateDarknezz999 The PL-990's cartridge fitment is not P-mount; it is proprietary and cannot be replaced. You can upgrade to an elliptical stylus, however, for a modest improvement in the sound. The built-in preamp is very good. If you would like to use a different cartridge or an external pre-amp, then the PL-990 will not suit your needs. It is a basic "plug-and-play" turntable for people who want something inexpensive, easy to set up, and good quality.

Just stumbled on this video and got a nice chuckle from the $13.99 price tag on your Michael Jackson picture disc. In the intervening 10 years since you made this video, the average retail price for that record has gone up to $25 on picture disc in some stores. Crazy!

Thank you so much for this video. I just got this model recently as a gift. It's the first record player I've ever had, and I had no idea how to assemble or make it work. What's more, the instructions included were for a different model. This video was extremely helpful and useful in assembling my record player, so once again, thank you.

Tape can sound good, but I would definitely use CD, given the choice. There are a lot of bad sounding CDs out there, but also a lot of great sounding CDs, and when you're making one yourself, you can easily preserve the full dynamic range of the original recording.

It is the best turntable you can get for the price. Of course if you pay more, you can get a better turntable, but for a budget turntable, the Pioneer is an excellent choice.

@michaelgoldberg29 The Gemini is designed for DJs and requires a phono preamp or a receiver with a phono input. The Pioneer is designed for home use, so it is easier to set up and plugs right in to the aux input of almost any stereo system.

@rafael502 I think the Pioneer actually sounds better than the Audio-Technica, although it doesn't have all of the fancy features and the build quality is much cheaper. Every record player causes a very tiny amount of "damage" (groove wear) every time it plays a record. But if used and cared for properly, this wear will be so small and unnoticeable that you'll still be able to get a lifetime's worth of enjoyment out of your records.
@vwestlife
@vwestlife 14 жыл бұрын
@metalslay666 Since you are hearing the "needle talk", that means the problem is most likely in the cartridge or preamp board, not the stylus itself. If you bought the turntable recently from a store or online vendor, you should contact them and ask for an exchange. Or if it's been longer than their exchange period but the turntable is still under warranty, call up Pioneer and ask them to repair or replace it.
@vwestlife

@Renneskid The turntable does not have a built-in amplifier, so you need to use either a stereo system as your amp, or a pair of amplified PC speakers.

@awhitekeet 3 to 5 grams is the design standard for LPs, and is what most professional DJ turntables track at. This will not cause any appreciable wear to your records, as long as you clean the stylus periodically and replace it when it gets worn.

I have always kept my turntables and the LPs. The CDs and CD players are second to my LPs. and turntables. I have The Luxman PD-131 that is posted, and a Thorens TD-125 MK 11 with a Rabco SL8 E linear tracking tonearm. The Bang and Olufsen RX2 that is also posted. I have a vintage Rek-O-Kut, and tonearm which was my 1st transcription turntable. Glad to see budget turntables coming back high end tables have always been around like the Sota, VPi, and Continuum
@vwestlife
@vwestlife 14 жыл бұрын
@dhsc19 The automatic return mechanism prevents you from moving the tonearm all the way to the center of the platter, but it is indeed a rather short tonearm. The specifications for the very similar Optimus LAB-1100 turntable (same chassis) lists the tonearm length as 195 mm.
@vwestlife
@vwestlife 14 жыл бұрын
@metalslay666 I noticed you're in the UK. In Europe, most 45s are pressed with the small center hole, so you don't need the 45 adapter. It is for American 45s which are pressed with the large center hole.

I had a P-Mount based Technics SL-BD20D turntable and I wasn't too happy with it. Even with an upgraded cartridge and brand new stylus, it had noticeable distortion on the inner grooves. The featherlight tracking force is also not suitable for playing warped records. But I may still try a linear tracking turntable (which I believe are all P-Mount) just to see what they sound like.

That's a nice record player! This really must be one of the better ones. Really nice that it is a full automatic type. I really want to have a full automatic record player, but they're hard to find... years ago I had a late 80s Grundig (rebadged Philips) record player, the quality and the features were pretty much the same as on your record player, except mine had no strobe and a sensor to switch between LPs and singles. But the mechanism was slightly messed up so I finally threw it away...

@polidosk8 There are two different kinds of the protective cover: one that swings up and down on a hinge, and another that you just slip on and pull off. The swing-down type is supposed to always stay on the cartridge, but you can pry it off completely if you want.

When the row of dots for the corresponding speed (33 or 45) and AC mains frequency (60 Hz for North America, 50 Hz for most other countries) appears to be stationary, rather than moving left or right, then the turntable is playing at the correct pitch.

Take off the platter, put the belt around the large circular part on the underside of the platter, put the platter back on the turntable, and looking through one of the holes, grab the belt and pull it onto the motor spindle. It may help to put a piece of tape around the belt to make it easier to grab, and then remove the tape once you get it on the motor spindle.

It does come with a 45 adapter -- you can see it at 1:55 in the video. I use the red one because it has a cone-shaped top which makes it easier to just "plop" a 45 on the turntable and have it perfectly centered.

@bugleboy5 I've never had to touch the tonearm adjustments, so I don't know exactly what they do. The tonearm lifter spring is a flimsy piece of plastic which tends to wear out with age and cause the tonearm to drop more quickly, but if you're concerned about that, you can gradually let go of the tonearm lifter button with your finger to get a smooth needle-drop.

The only other low-cost "hi-fi" turntable with strobe and pitch control that I've seen is the Music Hall USB-1, which appears to be the same thing as the Audio-Technica AT-LP120 except it is belt drive instead of direct drive, comes with a different cartridge, and doesn't have 78 RPM speed. It is priced about halfway between this Pioneer and the AT-LP120.

As a person who has had LPs and turntables since he was a child, I've suspected that all of the "entry level" turntables are the same. I suspected the $500.00 Denon and the $100.00 Crosley T 400 were much the same. I have the Denon. I bought the Crosley T400 just to prove it to myself. All I did was upgrade the stylus to an elliptical, and substitute a rubber mat for the slip mat. That improved the sound quality by a factor of at least 3 (and it wasn't that bad to start). Maybe I should start selling upgraded Crosleys on Ebay for $220.00? What do you think? Nah. Me either. The Crosley, BTW, has a killer built in phono equalizer. It compensates nicely for the low output AT 3600 L cartridge.

I just got one new on Amazon for $70 plus free prime shipping. My father-in-law had one he bought in the 90s (that I gave a friend who has a bigger vinyl collection than me) and it's great AFAIC. Thanks for the video! I bought one on eBay and it came with the belt loosely hanging out. The manual wasn't very helpful, so your video helped me out greatly! One possibly stupid question: when an LP is playing, I can hear the music even if I switch off the speakers it is connected to. Why is that? It can't just be from the tone arm reading out the grooves, can it?
@Halbmond

Wow, it turns out this sound really does come from the needle! I knew that the needle going through the grooves creates vibrations, which eventually become the music-but I thought this would have to be heavily amplified, and I didn't imagine that those vibrations leak outside in the process!
