The SX-1010 is a truly great piece of hi-fi. Mine is coupled to a pair of B&W DM605's and all i can say is WoW
@arthurdavis10656 ай бұрын
Sx 1010 is THE most underated of the pioneers because people love those shiney face plates from 1975 and beyond models. When it comes to tone reproduction this machine beats them all. Its quality built, certainly not the worst to work on ( marantz owners be prepared) . I listen to HPM 60's at low to medium volume and DCM KX-12's for the concert level deep purple tracks. Both pairs if i want people to cover their ears! Its deafening at 50% volume which is where i limit the knob to. Just the best IMHO.

Looks is subjective. I think the 1010 looks alot like the old Macintosh which adds to the nostalgia value. I have one and agree the warmth of the sound is comparable to few receivers ever. Never for sale!! Found it in Maine for $800 us, drove 5 hours round trip in a blizzard before someone else did !! Worth the road risk 100%.

The BEST SX Pioneer ever made, IMHO. I don't care for the sound of the X5X and X8X models. They seem very harsh and tinny compared to the X3X/1010. Plus, the 1010 has gobs of power.

I have the SX-838 which is two steps down at 50 watts x 2 and it is one of my favorite receivers. Have my eye on the TOTL SX-1010 which, I believe, is one of the best sounding Pioneers EVER! That series is warmer and more musical than the series that followed it. I would take this series over the SX 1050+ series. Too bad I didn't know about these earlier because I got my 838 for less than $100 years ago. It has had some service since then. Things get old. And currently one of the Phono inputs are problematic-probably need some caps!
@tcapone17342 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Components rarely fail on these unless abused. many times the pots and switches just need cleaning only. Contacts oxidize and get dirty over time.

most people don't realize how freaking heavy these guys are. I had an SX-838 and it weighed 40 lbs. The 1010 must weigh close to 50 lbs. If you want this much power I think you're better off going with separate amp & tuner. They're much, much, much easier to work on and a $70 used pioneer/kenwood/sony, etc. tuner specs will usually be much better than the receivers.

I have to bring my SX-1010 for repair. One channel (left I believe) is intermittent. The switches and pots are most likely dirty and oxidized. The signals run through all these prior to the output stage. Any one of them could be the problem. Component failure is not likely. I even spoke with an engineer and the national service manager in the electronics company I work for and they agreed. 90% of the time it is dirty contacts.
@vintagestereo2 жыл бұрын
just do a completely recap and let the repair guy do all the potmeters in a bad
@tcapone17342 жыл бұрын
@@vintagestereo Well that is a great suggestion. I would consider that. But I think the original caps are fine, and they are matched to my knowledge within strict tolerances. I'd rather not mess with those if not necessary. I have a specialized repair shop near me thank God that works on all high end audio equipment and has been in business for decades. They even service McIntosh the most expensive there is on the planet. And Marantz equipment too. This unit was never abused. My former boss gave it to me for free years ago. And whenever I played it, it would never be played above halfway volume (power), and not only that I ran a small fan in front of it over the top at all times while playing to keep those output transistors cooled. Never run any amp above its half way point. That is the golden rule.

Those units don't like 4 ohm speakers. They showing it by getting really hot when on idle. That's why I avoid 4 ohm speakers. It's pity that Canton is not producing 8 ohm speakers. I would like to have CT 90 or CT 2000 pair. But Jamo Concert 7 is enough for me :)

I've been running this amp days with 4 ohm. Pushing it hard and have zero issues with heat. Maybe bias on yours is to high
@dominikmichalczak49412 жыл бұрын
@@simonjaarsma5570 I don't have it. But i've heard that some peopled had small problems with them. Bias issue could be the problem, yes but some speakers have less than 4 ohm, maybe that's the clue? I've had Heco Precission 100 speakers and they have 3,1 ohm impedance 🙂
@mixitrecording5677 Жыл бұрын
Check your bias voltage. It should be no more than +.6VDC and -.6VDC. I have mine set at +.55 and -.55 and have no issues at all driving lower impedance speakers. It barely gets warm, even at higher levels.

How does the sound compare to an SX-950 or SX-1050? Also, the REAL question is how these vintage units sound compared to the highly touted gear of today.
