The white LED kills it for me. I loved listening to my old Pioneer 3700 in the dark and having that warm light and the bluish VU meters glowing like a beacon in the night.

That's the Mac Daddy of all receivers , God bless you brother . I'm presently enjoying the 550 and 650 and in 1978 I had the 750 but I would love to get my hands on the king of them all , absolute perfection

Designed specifically for the hpm-150. This was so good they started TAD. A ultra high end audio company with the technology that they pioneered with this machine. Amazing stuff

The Pioneer SX-1980 was the best receiver that was ever produced by Pioneer. A Pioneer SX-1980 powering 4 Pioneer HPM-150 speakers was the best setup. I have 4 pioneer HPM-150 speakers to this day, have all original drivers in them and would never part with them. I have 2 Yamaha MX-1000U amplifiers powering them 295 watts RMS per channel of Class A power. Had to install separate power plugs and circuit breakers for these amplifiers because they were dimming the lights. Knocks pictures off the walls and shakes the concrete floor.

nice setup: I have the SX1280 with the HPM100's with JBL L112's as my 2nd set of speakers it's nice being able to get back to the Vintage stereos of the 70's. In 1980 I had the HPM100's with a SA700 Technics receiver and Technics turntable. I was so happy when I ran across the SX1280. The new stereos aren't the same, I have a Pioneer 120 watt receiver I got in 2002 and there's no comparison between the two. Like I said nice setup.

the 80´s was the worst totally plastic and very nasty sound ,maybe they thought people wouldn´t notice .not only pioneer did that,but prices come down to , i remenber lot´s of friend in highschool talkin`about they`re new X-series from pioneer it sounded really bad,even my es2000 system bought in japan in the early 70´s and given to me around 1978 by my father sounded like an high-end equipment .at the time it was given to me the es2000 system because a friend bought him in the u.s of a. a system turntable ,stereo receiver and speakers by pioneer that it was at the time the high-end system from pioneer

Are you using a speaker select switch on that set up? Just wondering,if the impedance between the amp and 4 speaker set up,is a problem?

Hello I thought you could only hook up 3 speakers how do you have 4 ? Looks and sounds great!
@CHUDHUCKER8 жыл бұрын
It has 3 pairs of speaker selector buttons. So 2 speakers, left and right for speaker A, then B and C are the same. You can see on the top left there is 1 of 3 buttons clicked in, so he is playing 1 pair of speakers on A. If you have 2 pairs of speakers, they need to be 8 ohm speakers to play A and B together, or any combination of 2 buttons selected. You should not have 3 pairs playing at once.

thanks!

CHUDHUCKER The receiver will automatically cut the sound off if you push all 3 speaker selectors at once. Built in overload shut off.

@chinyanyie8 жыл бұрын
+gt5001945 no it cant at high volume!
@jondubb357 жыл бұрын
Plant-Based MD it absolutely can. Especially if you get the 200 watt HPM-100s. Remember the wattage ratings in the 1970s were very inaccurate and most everything stereo related was rated way under what they could actually handle. I honestly wouldn't worry much about it. Even if the HPM-100s couldn't handle all 270 watts, there's no way you could ever listen to music with the 1980 cranked all the way up. Your head would explode before you got anywhere near that level.

You can but, you will suffer permanent hearing loss
@nobody6174 жыл бұрын
Underpowering is hiw most blow things up. Speakers asking for more than amp can give. With more watts than needed it gives you a ceiling of extra power. You can then turn it up to what the speakers can handle and they will love it and the amp will not stress

@tomdavis63713 жыл бұрын
That receiver is one of the finest ever built. It's better than ANY modern receiver by a long shot. If there are any down sides to it, it lacks some modern day connections which I'd wager the owner doesn't care about.
