The 2 I have are VSX-D704S and VSX-524K. The 704 was repaired 3 months after purchase. About 5 years later all it does is blow the fuze. The 524 I bought used I had for 2 months. It was working fine until I hooked up a center speaker. It did have an issue where it would struggle to power on. Click on click off. 2 days after playing the center channel it turns on thencright off. I plan to repair both of these but im still in the learning process. Thats why I watch these videos.

That trick to clean up the RCAs was the golden nugget I took away from this video. Such a simple solution but I never thought of it. The time I have wasted rubbing those old, corroded RCAs by hand... Thanks for that! Great videos by the way. Thanks!

I just had a similar experience with a VSX 5600. Snagged it from ebay for $9.99 with $20 shipping. Seller said it only had output from rear or center. I have a parts 5600 that I suspected I could pull transistors from and bought it thinking I could make two from one. Got the new one home and unboxed it noticing the front channel jumpers were stuck in some video outputs. You know where this is going.....swapped the jumpers and it is 100% functional. Of course my parts 5600 was a fully functional mint unit that USPS dropped and cracked the main board. Lost out on that one, but won on this one! If you ever get inside a 5600/5700 it has a much more serviceable layout. The regulators and relays are lined up nicely in the left front where they are very accessable although the amp section is still the messy stacked affair.

Excellent set of videos. I love this series of receivers as I grew up with a 5700S in the house. I've bought several of them over the years ( various x300, x500 and x700 series. Nothing newer other than the highly regarded D1S.) and have never considered them BPC (black plastic crap) as many of the diehard vintage guys do. They are great for 2 channel stereo and I think they have an excellent sound signature. I have a variety of them around the house and enjoy them greatly.

Dustin, thanks for watching. I agreed 100%, the 9700 was the perfect choice for my garage system, I am using it strictly as a control amp since I have (2) outboard amps that drive my speakers and this unit does have discrete IR codes for power and inputs in case you have an automation system, I use an old MX3000 to control everything it works very well.

I have that same soldering station, got it used at a flea market for $15, probably 20 years ago. it's still the only one I use. the original tip it came with seemed to last forever. I did put a new tip on it once, but really didn't need it. I put a new silicone cord on it once, cuz I ran over the original one with my desk chair. still going strong. I might end up using it for the rest of my life. I even plugged it into 240 volt in a foreign country once by mistake, stupid me. would buy a second if I could find one. mine's labeled xytronic on the bottom, model 168-2C

Does yours get hot on top after long hours of play ? Mine did ,even just using the preamp section to an External power amp and i put a computer fan on top and no more heat,must be all that pro-logic stuff.I sold it and replaced it with a yamaha rx-v2090,doesn't even get warm when i push it.
@luvradios
@luvradios 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the voltage regulator heat sinks were undersized , that combined with all the outputs just sitting at idle produces a lot of heat, very common for this series.

While watching this episode, I couldn't but think of my VSA 910, that I purchased in 1989. It had not been in use since I took up a job abroad in 1998. Has excellent specs. Now it turns on intermittently. Can you suggest a place where I can get a hold of a proper service manual for VSA 910. Thanks.

Great Trilogy! I own a Pioneer VSX-9900S and I only get sound when in Direct Mode. I tried resetting the receiver but no luck. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
@luvradios
@luvradios 4 ай бұрын
I believe the 9900 used a DSP chip which is why I chose the 9700 instead, I would say that chip is either bad or possibly developed cold solder joints, could also be one of the supporting ic's for the DSP has developed cold solder joints.

I have the VSX 9300. After about 4 hrs of listening to music at a pretty loud volume I lost all audio. Unit would get really hot! I mean you could even smell it. Pre amp side still works, so right now i'm running it with a Yammy amp. I would love to get it back running under it's own power, but no one around here works on audio.

VDP = The short lived Video Disc Player! They were large laser discs the size of lp records. These 1990-1991’s were pre-DVD era. I own a 9500SX. It no longer has sound after I foolishly hooked up a car sub to the center Chanel. There was an electrical flash from inside the unit and it lights up but no sound. It blows the internal glass fuse immediately when replaced with a new one. Help! Any tips?
@luvradios
@luvradios 3 жыл бұрын
Ah, Video Disc Player! I know them well I still have a test disc just in case. So most likely you shorted the outputs of the center channel amp, if you are good with a multi meter then open the up and test the outputs, the center channel pair should be easily accessible on the top of the heat sink, check for shorts there and through the supporting circuitry, if this is more than you want to deal with you can contact me (email add on the “about” tab) and you can send the unit to me for repair.

excellent video I have a question on my 9700s the station only shows TUN instead of TUNER or PHO instead of PHONO is the display damanged ?
@luvradios
@luvradios 9 ай бұрын
No, most likely you have cold solder joints on the display tube. I did a video on a VSX-9500, if you check that out you'll be able to see what im talking about.

I have a Pioneer model VSX-403. I get one station. I van push the tuner up and down buttons and watch the numbers change, but I hear the same station no mater where I set the number. Obviously I need a tuner. I know what one looks like and how to change it in an OLD stereo. But I have no idea what to do with this. Can you send me a photo of what to look fore?
@luvradios
@luvradios 4 жыл бұрын
On this unit you will need to repair the tuner at component level, if you’re comfortable with using a DMM check the supporting components on the tuner board first just to eleiminate something easy: caps, diodes etc.

I have a 9900...when I press any sound setting other than pro-logic, I get nothing but static. ANy suggestions as to where to look for the problem? Resolder all the pins on the display board like you did in your other video?

The display board wouldnt cause your issue but you might wanna check my video on a VSX-9500, I think that unit had a simular issue with the sound field settings.
