A familiar sight you might see during the middle of summer is the yellowing of corn leaves on end rows in your fields. You might wonder to yourself, what causes this? In this video, Pioneer Field Agronomist Matt Montgomery gets down to the root causes of this yellowing, why it happens, and what you can do to manage it. Generally, the yellowing of leaves is mainly caused by a deficiency of potash in the plant and the competition for water. Nutrients are taken up into the corn plant in 3 main ways: directly by the roots, during water uptake, and diffusion. Drought-like conditions can result in less uptake of the necessary nutrients, as well as higher competition by grass roots next to the crops on the end rows, which can lead to yellowing of the corn leaves.
