Here in New Mexico the Native peoples planted corn seeds 10-12” deep where moisture is more available. Then Once the stalks were growing they plant runner beans in among the corn. The stalks provide the trellis for the beans to grow and the beans fix nitrogen for the soil.

T'is true! 30 years ago when I lived on Long Island, I had a little garden that consisted of four 4x4 squares. One square was devoted just to white corn. I got so much food from that garden...it was amazing- and the best corn I've ever eaten! Just getting back into gardening now, only now I live in KY and have 27 acres..but I'm still doing this method of gardening because it's efficient and just works great. I now have three 4x12 squares, and my neighbors think I'm nuts for having this tiny little garden...but wait till they see the results!

We built a 6 x 25' raised bed that is 12" deep open to good garden soil on the bottom. I grow 3 rows of a sweet variety called Incredible every year for July harvest then plant bush beans for fall harvest to add nitrogen back to the soil. We freeze the corn. I have never thought about a short season corn just to enjoy some late season fresh eating corn! Putting this on next years plan for sure!!

Plant your beans in with the corn to provide nitrogen for the corn. If they are pole beans they can run up the corn stalk. Plant squash at the base of the corn as well to provide shade for the roots to stay moist. Its the Native American 3 sisters method.

@@CardiacCatthat's why my 9 corn plants did so well in my parents veggie garden! There was squash already there exactly where you said to place the corn! The beans were 3 feet away. Each corn plant produced 3 full sized corns! They were way better tasting than the store bought.

Second year trying to grow corn , we gave twenty raised beds . 1st year not enough water and fertilizer corn grew about three feet. This year we planted 80 stalks of corn, watered everyday, fertilized every 2 weeks...my corn was about 4' tall when we had a thunder strom come through with heavy winds bending all of my stalks over . We tried to lift the up and support them with t -post and string....I guess the damage was already done , we had about 8 ears only half full of corn. Will try again next year, I'm determined to get it right !

I learned one plant will pollenate itself but is better to use pollen from a different stalk. When the tassels begin to release the pollen, cut one and rub it on the silks of a different stalk so you don't need to rely on wind. You also need to protect them from wildlife when they are nearly ready for harvest.

This is my first year to try to grow corn. I planted, watered a lot, and fed my Silver Queen corn. I used Alaska fish emulsion, and 13 13 13 fertilizer. I planted in a 4' x 12' rectangle, my husband and I mixed Black Cow topsoil, manure and Canada Gold Peat. We put hardware cloth under the bed. We put cardboard on top of the hardware cloth. We filled the bed with the soil mix. My corn is taller than me (5'7") I tried to plant 4" apart, but I think some of them are 3", and I must have dropped some seeds, because some are way too close. 😢 My corn has tassels. But not one single ear or silk. 😢 We had a long drought. I watered every day. We had a lot of rain for a couple of weeks solid. I didn't water then. But why no ears? Maybe I didn't feed it enough? (There was one seed from some other kind of corn that got planted along with my Silver Queen. It grew faster, taller and has silks.) Maybe I didn't plant it deep enough? It got blown over by wind during the rain, but we added stakes and Florida weave, and righted most of it. And now, we have beautiful corn plants with tassels and no corn. 💔 What did I do wrong? {{{ Update! Maybe I spoke too soon? I think I found the very beginning of baby ears, not big enough yet for silks (very small) ? I'm going to research how corn grows and see. }}}

Hi Gary, your videos are fantastic. I’m gonna try corn this year. Two questions. First, what is your actual growing space are you saying it’s 4 x 4? Also, what do you think the very basic minimum of rows could be in order for this to work, I have a limited space.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN9 ай бұрын
lt's framed 4 feet by 4 feet so its 16 sq feet of growing space. Aside from raccoons the corn did great. You will want to water and feed it more with a water soluble planted this close together. So Ive done 64 seeds in this space. I recommend 48-64 seeds. I feel like you need a square this size. You could probably get away with a 12 sq feet of growing space. I planted mine on the same day! Mine are a shorter variety. They get to 4-5’ and planted them in a block of 10 gallon bags. It’s working very well! They are fabric grow bags so I have to water mine about everyday since it’s often 100 degree here still. I give them water soluble fertilizer every week (it’s my own JLF nitrogen fertilizer) and they are so nice and green with wide leaves and very little insect damage. I’m very excited to see the crop. ☺️ I had an earlier crop and it was a bit of a bust. I planted 16 and two rows and though they pollinated fine, the ants (leaf cutters) and deer/bunnies ate the tops off the ears! So sad. I got maybe two cups of corn out of it but it definitely gave me the corn growing bug and I planted again! Wish me luck with the pests! Our deer/rabbit fencing is under construction hence the grow bags. Everything must remain mobile so I can move them into the new garden space soon! 👍🏻☺️ Great video! I planted my onion seeds today (short day as I’m in the south) and brassicas. I’m getting ready to plant my carrots in my partially shaded garden bed and that worked well last year. Next will be English peas. ☺️I love fall gardening. It’s kind of my main growing season here in the south. It’s the only time I can grow brassicas to maturity and even get Brussels sprouts to grow at all! 🤷🏻♀️I had to learn to work with the climate I’ve got!

How often do you get 5 ears per stalk. Dig a trench put the dirt on the side,then put a few bags of sand on top of the dirt you took out of the trench. The dig another trench on the other side and put that dirt on top of the sand. Now you have a trench on each side of a mound. Only water the trenches. Roll all your seed up in a paper towel then fold a put both ends in a mug of water. When roots come out of the paper towel roll separate and plant on the mound.
