I am from Holland, I like this video very much. I Holland we have the Elstar apple, made by Arie Schaap in 1955. When I was 16 years in 1961, I ask my father to go Wageningen where mr.Arie Schaap was working at the IVT Institute. He told my the same story how to make new apple varieties . Now there many red mutants of the Elstar apple.

This is an excellently produced video, really informative, particularly the part about pollinating and developing new varieties, probably the best explaination on youtube. Incidently I have a Frostbite tree here in England that I grafted last year, I can't wait to tase the 2 fruit on it later in the year when they a ripe. Thank you for a great video

We Americans are so fortunate to have U of Minnesota's apple breeding program. I just planted Chestnut and look forward to finding room for Centennial, Frostbite, Keepsake, and Sweet Sixteen somewhere in my ridiculously tiny city backyard.

Sir, why Minnesota climate is not ideal for growing apples. I shall feel obliged if you kindly let me know the details of winter and summer temperatures of Minnesota. Does Minnesota not have snowfall? Thanks. Welcome and heartiest regards. Mine is a subtemperate subtropical climate in India and I feel some scope of growing apples in my area but is not coming across some good varieties of apples which may suit my area and could compete with commercial varieties.

Sir hats off to you to learn that UO Minnesota is actively and wholeheartedly dedicated to apple breeding program. I am from India and mine is subtemperate subtropical climate. I have some intuition that apple can be successfully grown in my climate. Basically as everybody know that apple is a temperate fruit crop and its origin is said to be in central asia in temperate climates of Kazakhstan. My area summer temperature reaches as high as 38-39 degrees celcius in the peak summers towards second fortnight to first fortnight of June. Are there any low chill varieties for hot climates developed by the UO Minnesota. If so kindly do tell and shall feel highly obliged if you send some response and the climatic conditions in winter and summer temperatures to have some idea. There is no snow in my area but second half of Nov. to Dec. and January are definitely chilly. There is a big hype of suitability of low chill apples like Anna, Dorsett Golden tropic sweet, Sundowner and tropical beauty etc. but I don't think it could compete with varieties being grown commercially in temperate regions of J&K, Shimla and Kinnaur etc. so as to stick a test plot of such varieties and through replication of its performance and fruit characteristics before commercial varieties. Thanks a lot. Welcome and heartiest regards.

I believe the information stated by David Bedford at 2:10 may not be correct. To my knowledge, John S. Harris, not Peter Gideon, was the first person to produce apples in Minnesota in 1857 in the town of La Crescent. Why is there no mention of John S. Harris or La Crescent, MN (Apple Capital of Minnesota) mentioned in this history? "John S. Harris arrived in La Crescent in 1856 and soon gave the town its identity of” Apple Capitol of Minnesota”, a title that the city copyrighted in 2002. Despite the belief “by 99 out of 100” people that apples could not grow in Minnesota”, Harris planted his first apple trees here in 1857 and experimented with them until he grew trees hardy enough to withstand the severe Minnesota winters. He planted thousands of apple trees and hundreds of varieties, a full half of which he said were complete and total failures. Harris became known as “Father of the Orchardists” in Minnesota and was also a founding member of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society." -www.cityoflacrescent-mn.gov/about-la-crescent/history/ "John Samuel Harris (August 17, 1826 - March 24, 1901) was an early American horticulturalist, who was the first person to successfully plant and propagate apple trees in Minnesota, a climate in which it was previously thought that the fruit could not survive the harsh northern U.S winters." -en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_S._Harris_(horticulturalist) "At the 1866 Minnesota State Fair, his (John S. Harris) exhibit of 20 apple varieties inspired the state’s fruit growers to form the Minnesota Fruit Growers Association. In 1868, the group changed its name to the Minnesota Horticultural Society and Harris was elected president the following year." -northerngardener.org/legends-mshs-john-s-harris/
