Been a pipefitter for a few years and you broke this down perfectly man that's was some nice welds also. I've worked some welders before that couldn't weld anything without pulling everything out of wack and the welds wasn't as nice. I like using a portaband cutting out socket welds but a grinder works...

3:20 you should use the end of the rubber mallet to adjust the elbow or anything else more precisely/wrap electric tape if you're worried bout damaging the wood, since the mallet head's heavier and harder to give light and controlled power,

I’m curious why you had 1” take off when the blue book says 7/8” for 1” pipe. Thanks just trying to learn it all

7/8” plus 1/8” expansion gap. Without the expansion gap the pipe will not be able to expand and contract freely causing welds to fail.

For plumbing fitting to fitting in the shop I use a piece of large channel and a block of cold rolled square stock. It saves a ton of time fitting and we all know stainless is gonna draw some no matter what you do! Sometimes good enough is better when it is quicker.. No disrespect just sharing something that shaves time for me!

That’s awesome brother. But it didn’t take me long to build. 10 hrs for a one man show is enough. Plus we aren’t in a hurry here ever. I’m in my office 1/3 of the day 😂 but thank you for your knowledge. Very informative. Thank you for stopping by boss. I’d like to see a picture of what you’re talking about. @VantageWelding3 жыл бұрын
How long will it take you to build this?
@timebert61413 жыл бұрын
@@VantageWelding I build something that is very similar to that. It has 26 or 28 welds to make. I work a 9 hour shift. I build 2 when I am slow, 3 is a good day and 4 is tops. But there are about 3 variants of it and I have been working in the same work center for 15 years... I know exactly what order I am going to sub assemble everything in. I spend very little time on fit up and I am welding on a positioner. Not really a very fair comparison!

@@VantageWelding I just use a long flat piece of c channel on top my welding bench. I then set a piece of hot rolled 4X4 on top the c channel. Then I have a flat bottom and straight side to push the fittings down on the plate and up against the block. That hold everything level fitting to fitting and straight in line. Clamps will fit over the block to hold parts when necessary. I also cheat and use expansion/contraction rings to set my depth of engagement.

thanks for the video. so just to clarify, when you're cutting your end to end pieces you cut them about 1/4 inch short to make up for the 1/8 you're pulling the fitting back on both sides?

I’d have to rewatch the video bud. But yes. You have to account for all the take offs and sometimes account to weld shrinkage as well. It all depends on your tolerance limit and WPS.

Nice!! What amperage were you welding at from the first pass to the second and how would you weld those sockets without pulling too much like 6to3 and 6 to9 or just from 6 to 12
@VantageWelding3 жыл бұрын
100 amps. I’d quarter the whole pipe which means welding inverse of whatever heater you start with. So if you start from 12-3 the second pass would be from 6 to 9, so on and so forth. Heat travels in the direction of your travel, and that’s where it usually pulls towards!! Hope this helps.

Why people haven’t adopted the use of Gap-O-Let spacers is beyond me! Dow went to those spacers 30 + years ago and they are required in all socket welding specs for the company.
@VantageWelding8 ай бұрын
😂😂😂😂 did you not see how easy that was?
@VantageWelding8 ай бұрын
I never understood the spacing tool for an o let.
@SeldomFales8 ай бұрын
Sure, I know exactly how easy it was because I used the same method many times but you need to see how fast & easy a Gap-O-Let is! You now the head space it gives so your pipe cuts are always accurate. Perfect head space gap every time when used and it ensures measurements are correct with a proper head space. The Gap-O-Lets are far superior to the old cardboard spacers because those you could crush during fit-up, can’t crush the Gap-O-Lets. Since Dow at one time used few socket weld fittings I was there when the switch to them occurred. Since relatively new to use(socket fittings), Dow fitters and contractor fitters forgot/neglected to allow for a head space during fitup partly do to poor/no training and human nature-forgetfulness! The Gap-O-Lets allowed welding inspectors to verify there was head space.
