Piper Cherokee 140 Tour and Preflight

In today's video, we'll tour my 1966 Piper Cherokee 140. I'll also cover my personalized preflight procedures and talk about some of the lessons I've learned as a first-time airplane owner.

Awesome video! Am looking at buying a Piper Cherokee 140 to get my pilots certificate in and this video was great to learn about it. How much did that engine overhaul cost with labor anyway?

It was $24,250 by Penn-Yan Aero. Best part about using them was that everything was included in the quoted price: shipping there and back, all engine accessories, and a fantastic warranty.

Nice looking bird. Where are you located in North Carolina? I'm in Martinsville, VA and also have a '66 140. Couple of things... get that pitting on the strut re-chromed sooner rather than later. Your exhaust flange gaskets should not have any sealant on them. Exhaust gaskets are dry gaskets. Your flashing Nav Lights are not approved unless your Green, Red, white lights stay on steady - then you can have flashing White strobes on the wing tips. I'd love to get together and we can compare notes between our legacy birds...

I talked to the guys at the shop about the gasket sealant; they swear by it, but it seems there's a big difference of opinion on whether to use it or not. As for the lights, one of the previous owners had them installed and they've got two modes: solid and flashing. Switching between modes is done by cycling them on and off, so for preflight, I just cycle them to flashing, that way they switch straight to solid when I turn them on in flight.

Great video, but it pisses me off because it reminds me of the plane I almost bought. A 1968 Cherokee 140 (150 hp) in very nice condition, almost as clean as yours. Had lots of great upgrades and similar time on it. I had to bail on the deal when I found out the FAA wanted me to go through a 12-18 month, multi-thousand dollar series of visits to a psychiatrist because of their BS SSRI med rules (it wasn't for depression and in fact I never had a diagnosis requiring or recommending the medication). As a result I gave up on aviation entirely and as far as I'm concerned, the FAA can get bent.

toe breaks are not worth their weight in the 140. I have been flying mine for twenty years and never needed them
