Watch as I complete my first transition through Boston's Class Bravo Airspace!
Class Bravo airspace covers a lot of area in the United States, so it seems reasonable that everyone should know how to fly through it, yet many pilots won't venture anywhere near Class-B airspace. On our way to Marshfield Massachusetts for dinner, Alexandra and I hope to prove that Class-B airspace is nothing to be afraid of, even for the first time.
Hey, did you guys know that the FAA actually certifies flight instructors to tell you everything that I try to convey in these videos? You should definitely talk to one of them instead of trusting some video you found on the internet, because who am I to tell you how to fly? I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences with the world, and these videos are not meant to be instructional or advisory in any respect.

Very nice mix, enjoyed the flow and loved the smile on your passenger's face -- there isn't a better feeling to take someone flying who ends up enjoying it as much as we do. One thing I do when on initial "call" to Class B is say "VFR" after my N# and before the geographic reference. When I toured TRACON some months back the controllers told me it really helps them sort out their awareness in that I am not another aircraft already cleared within their control in search for my N#. Seems to work great ever since I changed my call up sequence, actually they've given me a priority over others on the frequency who called up before me.

+MrJimmer Excellent comment! I've been thinking about visiting our local TRACON in search of advise just like this. Come to think of it, I used to include something like, "VFR request" when I was training. I guess I just lost it over time. Thanks for reminding me.

+Utku Apaydin Thank you for you very enthusiastic comments! Dang! I knew somebody would comment on that! Sometimes making good film gets in the way of correctness. If you listen closely, you can see that the sounds of the switches clicking after my announcement do not line up with the video, and my jaw is not moving while I said my call. I moved the audio back in that one shot to eliminate an awkward pause at the end of the video. Unless you know of an anomalous airport, such as I've encountered at Northampton (7B2) MA, always make sure all parts of your aircraft are over the hold line before you announce, or contact ground. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

+Friendly Skies Film - Haha I noticed that too, and it's interesting how editing can do things like that. In one of my own videos, editing made it look like I had taken the runway and begun my takeoff roll without clearance. A viewer called me on this 'mistake.' In reality, I had edited out the initial takeoff clearance while holding short. On the runway, I had extended my takeoff roll to proceed past wake turbulence before going full throttle. I didn't inform tower what I was doing (which is fine - I was the aircraft cleared to use the runway). The tower re-stated my takeoff clearance as a friendly nudge to get me to hurry up because another airplane was holding short behind me. That second exchange during the acceleration fit perfectly in the flow I was aiming for in my editing, so that's what got into the final film. It didn't occur to me at the time that I was making it look like I'd just committed a runway incursion.

strongbonez Hm, not that I know of, but there might be some guidance you can get from them. The only other suggestion I have to offer is that center controllers look very favorably upon pilots that sound like they know what they're doing when you get in contact with them over the radio.

+hollier002 Thanks for commenting. Nothing sounds more heartbreaking to me than giving up on your dreams. I've been lucky enough to always be able to pursue mine, even if I have to take a break for a while. I find that most college students like myself "give up" because the path you take after college seems so uniform in TV shows and popular culture. I take them flying at night over our city and climb until our entire campus is a single speck of light, and tell them that everything they know is down there, and seems like so much, but look what you can do. Sorry for the rant, I just wish that everyone could experience the outlook on like you can have by owning an airplane in college. I thank the universe everyday for how lucky I am.

Excellent video! Class B should be on everyone's bucket list. And it's always great to see a wide grin on a passenger! :D As a primarily a helicopter guy landing off airport, wind recognition can be found from many places besides ASOS, wind socks, and surrounding airport's ASOS. Trees, smoke, rivers, lakes, flags, GS vs IAS on your GPS with ground track, and hey, sometimes we even use the cows! *Queue "the more you know!"* hehe Thank you for all your informative and entertaining videos! -Jacob

I just discovered this channel and I'm so glad I did. I'm a student pilot with 47 hours I'll take my checkride next week! I have two things to say, first of all I LOVE your intro. It is the so cool. And the second one is, I realized that you announced "8027F CLEAR OF RUNWAY before passing runway hold short lines. Why I'm saying this is I have done that once too and my instructor was like "boom you just blew your checkride..." So do I know it wrong or after an exhausting class B transitioning and dealing with non-working ASOS you got tired and made a mistake? Anyway you are doing an amazing job and your videos are so helpful and fun to watch!! Fly safe.
@boardaday
@boardaday 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, just found your channel. I usually tune in and listen to the weather way before 10 miles of the airport. And don't trust it to be 100% accurate. Especially the winds. If the airport destination has no automated weather, just look at a pond or lake to see the wind direction effect on the surface. Check the sock on downwind. Class B or C is no big deal as long as they let you transit... if not have a back up... as you say change altitude or course.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 жыл бұрын
+boardaday Those are some great pointers you've got there. All that prevented me from being more accurate with the wind was the abruptness with which I was dumped over the field by ATC. Having never been to the airport before, I was more worried about any traffic I might not also be hearing on the radio, since the other surprise outage had me paranoid. I definitely learned to ask center to check the ASOS and then get back on their frequency like you recommended. Every flight's a learning experience!

@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 жыл бұрын
+Josh McCorquodale Thanks so much! You can help share aviation if you post links to my videos wherever you find pilots! As for the Warrior vs. Archer debate, the biggest difference is in speed and useful load. I file my Warrior for 110kts cruising speed, but most Archers will do 120kts happily. You'll be paying for the extra 3 gal/hr, though. The Archer will also carry an additional 200lbs compared to the Warrior. In appearance, the big difference is in the Archer's more rounded nose cowling; however, it makes inspections and spotting oil leaks much more difficult, as the Warrior's entire nose cowling is hinged. Also the Archer's stock wheel fairings are chunkier to cut down on that parasitic drag. Thanks for the comments, and don't forget to share aviation!

Hey Friendly Skies Film! I wanted to ask what is the big deal about flying in Bravo airspace? I live in Santa Monica (Los Angeles) and there is Bravo airspace around me. Maybe it's because my home airport is in the middle of class bravo airspace. (P.S. I am not a current pilot, but I know a lot and I am getting ready to become one, I'm just too young)
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 жыл бұрын
+Epic Derezzed Well, I must say that if you are too young, you certainly don't sound it! I have a lot of respect for people who don't sound their age, since I've always been one of them. From what I've encountered, most people don't learn to fly around class B, so consider yourself lucky. I'd be interested in hearing more of your story and how you learned so much about aviation if you don't mind sharing :)

so if your destination airport is in class bravo airspace how would you get to it? just enter in class bravo airspace closer to destination airport after goin on around or on the edge of class bravo? or something different?
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 жыл бұрын
+strongbonez Well, worse case scenario, you would go under the airspace. There are three class D airports around Boston, whose airspace goes from the ground up to around 2,500ft. The Boston class B begins at 3,000ft or 4,000ft, so technically there is a 500ft gap that you can sneak through, but I usually notify the class D tower of my intentions anyway. Great question, btw!
@glishskiii

You did not have to guess at the winds, however. You could have overflown the field and looked for a windsock. I saw the windsock in your video right after you landed so you can always take an extra few minutes to overfly the field and look at the windsock instead of guessing.
@FriendlySkiesFilm
@FriendlySkiesFilm 8 жыл бұрын
+Greg Ellis Right you are. I had a good experience doing this last week. My logic is this: Attempt the landing, as long as final feels stable. Compare GS to TAS, as I demonstrate in this video. If you choose to abort the landing, do so early enough that you can take a gander at the windsock on upwind. It might not be the most efficient method, but I haven't had to abort a landing for this reason yet. I just checked the video too. You're right! You can see the winds are calm in the correct direction. I was also unsure about how the sea breeze would affect my landing at 7pm.
@gregellis3859
@gregellis3859 8 жыл бұрын
+Friendly Skies Film You make a good argument for doing that. However, just be careful. I have landed with a tailwind that I thought was minor and it extended my landing quite a ways. +Nell E yes that may work, but at an uncontrolled field there is no active runway. I have flown into many an uncontrolled field where pilots are just blindly following others onto the wrong runway even though the winds favored another. Best option in that case is to wait and fly it properly with a head wind and be safe.
