Really glad of the four questions idea for checking pipes. I've got a set that I've been struggling with as a beginner for a while. I successfully identified that chanter stock's needed to be re-twined but have not thought to check the read seats or even the binding on my drones. I keep hearing a hissing sound and my pipes seem to deflate almost instantly, I'm hoping if I sort this, that may rectify things.

I'm getting a bit of air leakage out through the blow pipe. My tutor says that this is not enough to be concerned about, but I am having a lot of trouble striking in properly and forget about getting the chanter on and playing. Would love some advice!

With the stocks corked, I can blow the bag full and tight, then after about thirty seconds I can blow a small amount of air into the bag. I'm fairly certain they're airtight, I think it's because my warm breath condenses and takes up less space. My old bag did much the same but I think it might have had a slight leak past the flapper valve. Is this normal or is my bag leaking?

I recently purchased another bagpipe and put them in my old bag, then I found a slight leak at the seam close to where the chanter stock ties in, I retied the chanter stock in a slightly different position and solved this problem.

What has puzzled me most about the issue of applying "tuning tape" to the chanter is this: If the chanter is properly made, and a suitable reed is seated into the chanter, why would there be a need for applying tape to correct the tuning? The need for such a practice, is an indication of a problem with the chanter, or the reed used, or both. I would be very interested to hear further comments on this issue.

my practice chanter just randomly pitching high my instructor had the same problem with my chanter and we cant see anything wrong with it any ideas new hemp after problem

I notice that your tenors are tuning down, I always set mine to tune onto the hemp for maximum volume, being a band piper. As a solo piper do you not attempt to have yours tune into the hemp?

the naills do tend to tune a bit low. However, i do indeed try to have them tuning higher by performance time.

Help - help please! Having learned a few tunes on the chanter, I now want to move onto the bag. I can not seem to keep the bag inflated enough to play comfortably. I do not even have the drones in, the stocks are corked, and it holds the pressure nicely. The problem comes when I add the chanter to the bag. A lot of air escapes from the whole at the base of the chanter whithout me even start playing. (the hole that the finger does not cover) Is this normal?

Very normal! try this if you're still struggling: pipersdojo.lpages.co/4questions-01-easy-bagpipe-guide/

I play a sheepskin bag and every bag I buy has minute air leaks in a sink full of water. I think every bag has these kind of leaks.

Jim Macgillivray's "Pipes Up" DVD is a very good DVD for teaching on tuning the pipes.
