My uncle used to have a thing called a "Pipe King" it was a device used to break in pipes. It was a vacuum machine that drew on the pipe with a bellows and "smoked" the pipe for you using regular break in procedures and when after several smoking sessions, a pipe was seasoned with out whatever negative traits a "new" pipe would have. After my uncle passed, my Aunt would sometimes fill it up and use it when she was missing my uncle, but she never smoked herself.

What a nice story. Would be really cool if such a "pipe break in machine" would still be produced. Never heard about something like that and couldn't find any Information about it😭

Several years ago I took up pipe smoking. I have bought about 20 pipes over those years. I have cheap. mid range and some good quality pipes. I never had any burnouts with all my pipes until I purchased Peterson pipes. The first complete burnout I have ever experienced that destroyed my pipe was with the Peterson pipe. All four of my recently Peterson pipes are bumpy inside the bowl - meaning they are getting burned or warped. And yet, all my other pipes including Savinelli are completely smooth inside the bowl! Why is this happening only to Peterson pipes? What is it about Peterson pipes? I thought Peterson pipes were of good quality. Thanks.

In a discussion about lighters my tobacconist reminded us that the next most reliable lighter to a Zippo costs 500 CAD. I have also come to believe that a soft flame lighter is best for cigars. It is my belief that disposable lighters will soon be a thing of the past.

Unless there is something wrong with the briar it takes a good amount of work on your part to burn out a pipe.

I use a Corona lighter which are copies of Dunhill pipe lighters. They are not nearly as expensive. A while back another pipe store in Chicago got over 100 from an estate. I only bought one, and regret not buying more. They are excellent lighters.

Yup the good old Corona-Old Boy. I have a chrome and black finished one in use for many many years now, and just recently I bought a second Old Boy with a gold plated and dotted surface. It was hard to get this exact one right now here in Germany, but luckily I found a pipe shop that had a last piece of this model in store. I just love these classy looking pipe lighters.

Pay fine money for a great pipe and perfect tobacco, then you dump butane all over it right before smoking. Matches just make sense to me too

I see where you're coming from but matches blow out so easily. The wind resistance of the Zippo is a significant merit. So there are pros and cons of both.

I have occasionally use a jet flame lighter to light my pipe outdoors under windy conditions. However, I am very careful to keep the flame away from the pipe. Basically will hold it such that the tip of the jet flame is no less than 1/2 to 1 cm above the tobacco. It gives off enough heat to ignite the tobacco without the flame coming into direct contact with either the pipe or the tobacco. Otherwise I mostly use either a soft flame butane, a wooden match or a wooden splint.

Great information! I use a zippo with pipe insert. I only taste the fuel after I've refilled my lighter. Even then it's only on the char light. And even then, it's not bothersome to me and goes away quick.

there are also very dry tobaccos that will burn really hot and burn out your pipe. i ruined a few cob pipes from aromatics and so i switched to moister VaPers. even some VaPers can get dried out and burn hot. you gotta keep it in mind when you pack your pipe.

??? New pipe smoker here......I've been breaking my pipes in with a loose pack of tobacco. Lightly puffing and at the end of the bowl, I shake the ashes to coat the walls. After she dries the next day very lightly pick loose, tiny debri, tobacco leaf off the wall and do it again. About 8-10 times before I pack her tighter and puff normally. I use a Turkish/Latika blend when doing this. Am I doing it right??
@fk80189

Better use pure Virginia blends to break in a pipe because Virginia tobacco produces the best cake. Latakia tends to produce a more smeary oily "cake" instead of a hard but porous cake. That's at least what I found out over the years. And that's what most people tell is to use Virginia tobacco.

GREAT video! Personally, I use an old WWI 'Kerosene Trench Pipe Lighter'...using Naptha with a soft flame, it is no different than a Zippo, but being solid brass, is a GREAT conversation piece matching my pipes! As for Zippo, I am exceedingly let down by them...if you have browsed their web store lately, you can't even order 'pipe inserts' by themselves anymore...and their 'pipe lighters' are few in selection! They have plenty of NFL, wacky weed and other lighters...but if you aren't smoking 'your thing' in a 3-inch glass pipe using 1,800 degrees of heat to light it, seems Zippo doesn't value you as a customer anymore...

Perhaps I am weird for thinking like this, but I prefer my grass out of a wood pipe over glass. I know I know, heresy! But I’ve found there’s no need for fast and hot other than people want to get zooted fast. But I’ve found that cannabis does just as well if not better if you take your time and smoke it like a hobbit and his Old Toby. It’s just so damn hard to find the knowledge on how to best go about doing it and taking care of your pipes. Tobacco pipe smokers turn their nose up at my skunk and potheads just say “durhur no carb why try?” I’m really glad that companies like MacQueen are making carb cups and putting info out on how to properly care for their pipes if your T’backy is more wacky than not. If I could get the bowl duration and aroma from tobacco and the full body stress and pain relief of marijuana I’d be set. It’s just so damn hard to find someone knowledgeable about both to help me figure it out.

Leave pipe for a day or two before removing mouthpiece. If cracked at the bowl base, you are smoking the doddle, way too hot and probably have a fault in the pipe.

I primarily smoke a pipe. I like the syle of the zippo lighter but not the fuel taste. So I use a soft flame ZPlus butane insert for my zippo lighter.
