jakomo 161 Tobacco is like anything. Everything in moderation. You cannot have a pack of beer a day and live very long. The same is true of pipes. If you have 10 bowls a day you will die. However, if you have one once a week or once a month there is no harm in it. The longest living in World War II veteran of 114 years smokes 12 cigars a day and still hasn't died.

Thanks for the info brother! I did my own research when I first started smoking a pipe. I even looked up famous people from the past who were pipe and cigar smokers to see how long they lived and what they died of. Most of them lived a long time and didn't die because of their pipe smoking. There are a lot of risks in life that have nothing to do with tobacco. I say moderation and just enjoy life. George Burn smoked cigars his whole adult life and lived to be 100. Personally, since I’ve started smoking pipes again, my stress level has fallen significantly! I’d rather die stress free doing something that I enjoy than falling over dead at my office from perceived stress and worry. Pipe smoking is so relaxing and it often takes me to a place that my brain can simple shut off. (No junk…just a nice tobacco). I prefer aromatics

As a PhD in biotechnology and having been a cancer- and currently heart disease - researcher, I would like to add some points: 1) Most smokers do not die from cancer, but from smoking induced heart disease (smoking increases your risk of artherosclerosis, clogged arteries) 2) It is indeed all about frequency (obviously your chance on cancer is higher if you smoke two bowls a day then if you smoke two bowls a week) And last: there are indeed worse risks for getting cancer: being obese or having a sedetary lifestyle (couch potato) is increasing your chances on a variety of cancers and heart disease much more than a daily pipe...

Bart Krist, thanks for sharing. I don’t know much about biology, but I think it is important to note that although inhaling tobacco smoke is of course bad, but also just keeping it in your mouth or even using smokeless tobacco (chewing) or vaping etc - these are all means to get nicotine into your bloodstream and it is nicotine which increases vascular disease. Here is some interesting read www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3755365/

Smoked cigars for 20 years. Now in my 40s I've switched to a pipe. I have never smoked cigarettes. Point being I'm not addicted to premium cigars or my pipe. I can go days or weeks without smoking. Not the same with cigarette smokers. They mix in addictive chemicals to cigarettes and it's a well known fact. Are pipes safer? Is anything safe? Researchers say hot coffee or tea can cause cancer. Look at all the people that die of lung cancer but have never touched a tobacco product. Everyday we roll out of bed we take some kind of risk. My sister died of breast cancer in her 30s. No family history of it. She was healthy as horse but she died anyway. Life is too short to worry about most things. I hope to meet some of you in the afterlife.

Glad someone said it! I see this stuff bandied around a lot - the reality is that there is always a risk associated with smoking, no matter how much. My PhD is in AI and Machine Learning for healthcare with a focus on lung cancer and I read studies all day every day - what you realise is that when it comes to lifestyle factors like smoking, all you can really say is that it increases your risk. Trying to quantify one type of smoking being safer over another ends up getting into murky waters, there are just too many confounding factors. I do and will continue to smoke a pipe, but I assume the risk is that I have a good chance of creating some issues because of it. As you say, there are some intuitive conclusions to draw such as less consumption equaling less risk, and not deliberately inhaling creating less risk of lung cancer, but even then, the waters are murky as I say. What you really need to look at with healthcare is meta-studies or systematic reviews. Even then, you're constrained by the quality of the body of work which the meta-study or systematic review has been done on in the first place.

I'm not discounting any info here, or any examples of folks living into their very late years without smoking related illness. However, one aspect left out of nearly all of these discussions is epigenetics. Objectively and factually, there are those of us who have our anti-cancer genes turned off and will get cancer regardless of lifestyle just as there are those of us with anti-cancer genes active who could lead lifestyles that promote cancer and remain cancer free. the hard part is seeing the common ground between the two.

Cancer begins when the body's PH level drops down to a highly acidic range, which causes lymphatic system to stop working correctly, and dead cellular waste begins to be dumped into the body's bloodstream as the lymph channels swell. Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, fact. So smoke you're pipe all day long as much as you like because let me tell you, if you eat right, get enough oxygen and nutrients, you're body's PH will remain balanced and cancer simply cannot survive in that environment, as soon as you compromise the immune system and acidosis sets in this is when you enter the teratory of cancer. If you're body's PH is alkaline you can smoke all day long and cancer simply will not be a reality, but if you're immune system is comprised and your diet is full of sugars and processed food ect and you keep pumping the body with carcinogens you will eventually die... simple as that . Keep you're body's PH alkaline and you'll be fine . As for genetics..it takes 23 separate genes to cause cancer to form, these gene's are turned on and off via environmental signals, stress diet ect , it's not genetic, is epi-genetic

My grandfather never smoked, never had a drop of alcohol in his life, yet died at 75 years old from esophageal cancer(that spread to his lungs). Go figure. My father, a physician of nearly 40 years, has been quite adamant about how "smoking" is bad for ones health. Having attended a day lecture/conference at a local hospital with my dad when I was young(around 10ish), they had a fresh set of lungs that were removed from a "lifelong smoker" on ice, on display in a glass case. Blackened and really nasty looking, oozing tar, inflamed and bubbles all over it. The fellow was (95) when he died, according to the little chart detailing life history. Well, that image seared into my brain kinda turned me off of eating the catered lunch provided for the attendees, pasta with red sauce and salad IIRC. My other grandfather(mom's dad) smoked a pipe for many years, and rolled his own cigarettes "that whistled" according to my mom(her dad). Apparently he gave up smoking as a gift to her for my parents wedding. Maybe her marrying a doctor was a reason, lol. Well, to round out this longwinded comment, I'm 34, and awaiting my first two pipes in the mail: two MM cobs and a couple tins of recommended blends a friend steered me towards. Due to be arriving this week, so I'll be lighting my first bowl this next weekend. I've tried cigarettes, tried a vape, and tried cigars. All multiple times, just to see if there was anything that caught. Well, each one caused me to nearly puke. Fingers crossed that pipes won't turn me green 🤣!

Probably one of the more truthful analyses of the effects of pipe smoking I've come across yet from a Fellow pipe smoker. Moderation in anything is key. Location is too. If you smoke your pipe in an enclosed room full of other smokers 2 times a week you are getting a small amount of your pipes smoke by mild accidental inhale, but you are getting HUGE amounts of second hand. Which is proven to cause cancer. So there are many facets. The biggest is predisposition to cancer in your family.

Sorry Tom ... I went back in time to watch this video and glad I did. Very interesting input from you. I'm sure we can all agree that many things we do involve some form of risk. Driving a car, taking a plane ride, crossing the street, swimming in the ocean. Life in general is a risk of some sort.

Great video ! I'm 60 and smoke two to six bowls of Prince Albert a day. Depending on weather My dentist told me there was risk of irritating the soft palate In the mouth. My doctor is Mormon and doesn't like tobacco or coffee. I have to drive on busy roads most days and consider it riskier by a long shot. "Happy smokes"

I'm with you! Seems that having a glass of water or other benign beverage alongside as you smoke is a good thing (not alcohol or hot or acidic drinks, which wash away even more of the mouth's protective mucus layer) is a strategy, as is taking a break if you feel irritation in your mouth. -Tom

As a motorcycle rider myself Im glad you brought it up. I smoke about a bowl a day and maybe a cigar once a week when I have the time to enjoy it. I always have something to drink and clean my mouth thoroughly after. And when I rife I wear all the proper gear. My mind set is that im going to enjoy my life and do the things I love and take steps to minimize the risks. No sense in being scared of everything. What would be the point to living?

It is not about smokers and non smokers...Yes indeed if you anything over excess it will effect your health, now whether it is a good or alcohol..anything excess will effect. Secondly I have my Cousin who didn't ever smoked and no habbit of drinking alcohol he died last year due to Lung disease... So in short ....forget and keep aside all these Research and Studies ... Just keep in Mind if you are smoking heavily then you should come down...Smoking pipes 3 times in a week is not going to effect anyone.... There are so many hazardous Air and pollution which itself is enough to make normal person sick

Cigarette smokers purposefully inhale smoke into their lungs, which causes the nicotine to enter the bloodstream. (red blood cells are used to transport oxygen, so if you pollute your lungs with nicotine, the bloodstream will also become polluted with nicotine) While nicotine can be absorbed through the mouth while pipe smoking, it's nowhere near as concentrated as when it's absorbed into the lungs.

I'm a little (lot) skeptical of 'recent studies' by scientists. Studies paid for by 'do gooders' who want to discourage certain behaviors often confirm the do gooders desire to control behaviors they don't like. Surprise? I take all scientific studies done to control behaviors with a grain of salt. Climate change? The Science is settled!!!!!!! Really? What real scientist talks like that? Anyway, I always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next ones eagerly. -- Bill (your unknown smoking buddy in NY).

I remember it used to be more so noted in the past the association of lip cancer with pipe smoking. My suspicion is that may have had more to do with vulcanite stems since vulcanized rubber contains nitrosamines and more could be possibly created from constituents in the rubber reacting with saliva. So, I personally don't buy pipes anymore that have vulcanite stems. As you mentioned from your club doctor tobacco variety can play a role in risk. From my research dark air-cured varieties have much higher carcinogens than flue cured. I read an European study on the developmental cancer rates of cigarette smokers depending on the respective variety of tobacco they smoked. For the duration of the study, those that smoked dark air-cured blends showed development of cancers as where those that smoked flue cured blends did not. The highest levels of nitrosamines I've seen noted was Indian dark air-cured. Cigars can be incredibly high too. If one can smoke virginias with ease then that would be the better choice but, myself along with many others can't handle the virginia bite. Todd
@NWPipeSmoker
@NWPipeSmoker 8 жыл бұрын
Interesting observations, Todd. An old vulcanite stem ... is like licking the sidewall of the tire on your car, on a hot day. I did read in one of the studies that much pipe tobacco (burley) is alkaline, which allows greater absorption into your mucus membranes than an acid environment (Virginias). More study needed! -Tom
@NGC6144
@NGC6144 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's my understanding also. The cigarette companies went so far as to add ammonia to tobacco to increase alkalinity and enhance nic. absorption. In the industry I think it is called "impact boosting."

Great video sir, very informative. You mentioned how doctors are now saying cancer is more likely caused by the combustion of something. It's interesting to note that "apparently" no one has every gotten cancer from smoking marijuana. Could be the chemicals released from the tobacco I suppose but I'm not sure if I buy the "combustion" reason.
@NWPipeSmoker
@NWPipeSmoker 7 жыл бұрын
Let's talk about your suggestion that nobody has ever gotten cancer from marijuana. What research supports that idea? I'd love to hear about it. My impression, from spending a lifetime around daily marijuana smokers, is that many of them are also cigarette smokers, and by the nature of the process, they draw deep - as deep as they can, often for as long as they can, to get the most out of a toke. More research needed! -Tom
@FreedomFist
@FreedomFist 7 жыл бұрын
NWPipeSmoker well we can't bunch in pot smokers who smoke cigs too, totally discounts the notion. I agree yes that more research is needed certainly, but it's almost certain that pot won't kill you. I'm not an advocate for either pot or cigs but just curious about doctors saying it's specifically combustion that causes the cancer. By that logic burnt toast should give you stomach cancer. Maybe it does, lol 😂.

good one, love this camera or filter it almost looks like super8 , anyway, I ride a motorcycle everyday to work. the MCN statistic while unbiased also is loaded by reported accidents. a small side swipe in a car is not much maybe not reported but on a bike it could be a wreck, 33 time more likely to be in an accident or 33times that accident will be 'bad'. I will go check the link. and how about the risks of pipe smoking, you really can't do a study and subject people to harm to prove it. I really feel while there is risk, it isn't worse than sitting by a fire camping or by the hearth. cigarettes have been tested and reviewed but they can only by extension attach findings to pipe smoking with such little and mostly anecdotal evidence of habits. but we do what we enjoy. I am glad to see you are doing well.

I'm a fan of Sigma's Foveon sensor - this was captured with a Sigma DP2 Merrill. I like the quality of the color, and depth of field, and video sizes are still reasonable enough to work with compared to full HD. It's cranky, though, not a casual point and shoot. David Hough's '33 times more likely' statistic seems to me well-reasoned, recognizing with any study there's no way to capture data 100% accurately. But I'm just me, not a statistician or clinician who would be better able to evaluate quality of studies. My friend Eric (who is more of that mind) shared another study, so the vids on this aren't done, yet. -Tom

Hey Tom...Thanks for this video. I will be reading all the information in the links you provided. My Doctors...both Heart and Family agree that with heart issues, it's all about the nicotine. They said nicotine makes your blood "Sticky" and easier to clot, also damages and constricts your arteries and reduces your oxygen levels in your blood. Their advice was cut way back, and switch to a very low nicotine blend....Or give it up completely. Thanks for the good wishes Tom....I appreciate that very much! Be well....

Like others said,moderation. If you smoke 20 bowls a day then you are risking health issues just as if someone eats 20 burgers or pieces of cake a day they are putting themselves at risk. One burger or piece of cake a day is not going to kill you or make you fat and I relate pipe smoking in the same way. BTW my Grandad smoked cigars daily as well as chewed tobacco like it was going out of style and he passed from natural causes never got cancer, I also believe genetics play a huge role
