I think Mumei's is clever. Nanashi Mumei means "Random Anonymous" because she can't remember her real name, but it can also be read as "Who Who" like the onomatopoeia for the noise an owl makes, because she's modeled after one

I love how unintentionally clever the Mori Calliope name is Mori is the verb die in latin, and Calliope is the name of a poetress, so it's refering on how she's death and a lyricist But also, the initials are "MC", something rap related that Calli herself didn't realize untill later when people pointed it out, it was a perfect coincidence

About Hololive names: (HoloJP Gen 0 and 1) -Tokino Sora means "Time of Sky" (Toki no Sora) -Roboco means "robo child". The "co" part of her name is a kanji that means "child", but could also mean "young woman". -Sakura Miko, miko literally means "shrine maiden". -Hoshimachi Suisei, "star-town comet". Suisei has a bunch of other meanings tho, like "decadent world" or "Mercury". -AZKi: Means azuki bean, a type of food. -Yozora Mel: Yozora means "Night sky". -Shirakami Fubuki: Shirakami "white god" Fubuki "blizzard." Almost feels like a reference to Simo Hayha lol -Aki Rosenthal: Aki "autumn" Rosenthal "valley of roses". I remember back then when hololive (and vTubers as a whole) weren't as popular in the west, Haachama (and other members too) didn't even had a consistent romanization of her name. In some old holoGraffiti episodes (now privated because the copyright mess hololive had in mid-2020) her name was romanized as "Akai Heart", which make it more obvious. Eventually they decided on the japanese transcription "Haato" which I think sounds cuter and hides a little more the pun.

A Calliope might be a church organ but it probably has roots in Greek mythology. Calliope is one of the seven muses. Muse can reasonably be connected as the origin word of musician. So Calliope Mori is some variation of 'musician death'. Thanks God of War for getting to delve deeper into mythologies.

Inugami Korone has some layers to it I think. An 'Inugami' is not really a "dog god". It's more like a volatile spirit which can grant wealth. It's pretty interesting. Look it up. 'Korone' ostensibly refers to the coronet pastry, but 'coronet' is in turn a reference to 'cornucopia' which which is like an overflowing basket symbolizing abundance. 'Korone' could possibly also be word play. I'm pretty bad with Japanese, but 'koro' seems to be a root word describing killing. All in all, I get the feeling that 'Korone' is a name that superficially seems very cute, but has some dark undertones to it. Much like Korone herself, I suppose.

Well sana is an anagram of nasa and her mascot the worm thing is the squiggle from the nasa logo. I remember kiara naming minecraft villagers the one time was like we need a blacksmith. She goes like here’s the word for iron or something and just put this bit on the end to make it tetsuo. And it fit that’s the main thing, it sounds ok. To us that sounds like something and I guess to Japanese sensibilities it makes sense?

well, the tetsuo one is akin to some last names that english people have, like "Smith", given that those were based on their job/family job and the like, similar to Baker for another example, so in general, does make sense, givne that in those times more flowery or impossing family names were reserved to nobles

Honestly that's just how Japanese people name their fictional characters it seems. I've read a few manga, and always the TL notes is like "This name is a pun. This character is lazy and his name translates to lazy bum". Imagine if we named our characters in stories like that. "Oh yeah, let me introduce you to my friends; This is my best friend his name is Childhood Friend. And this is my friend who lives next door, his name is Friendly Neighbour. And this friend here doesn't talk much, his name is Shy Kid."

I think that's just because it's very easy to understand the meaning of a name if you see the kanji. And you can change up the kanji to some that fit more to the meaning you're going for. With western names, you'd have to dig into etymology and such, or have them sound really really weird and unnatural.
