People need to understand that there is a difference between theatrical performing and signing in a concert. He's combining the hesitant characteristics of his role with the music to give a legitimate feel to an all around performance

Walk a mile in his shoes and you will see what it takes. The hours on stage are the least of it. Most people have zero idea about the amount of work put into a performance; physical pain, late hours, crazy life, and hard hard work Mad respect to anyone doing this, it takes so much stamina and courage. -musical mama

This guy (unlike Massey) gets it. This is THEATER, not self-glorifying solo concert. And he gave us a performance which shared what this character and this story is all about
@padraigpantoja83874 жыл бұрын
you guys can’t be so critical. him fiddling around with the tempo is an artistic choice and brings more body to the song. he is a little off beat but i actually quite enjoy it. I LOVE HIS RASPINESS. the raspiness may be from his voice being tired. he performed 8 shows a week, in a leading role, on broadway, hitting notes that are astronomically high, and some of you guys won’t give him a break. there’s a reason he made it to broadway as pippin. he has phenomenal technique and he has a wonderful tenor voice. he’s not acting as much either because this song is meant to show that pippin wants an ordinary life and it is not exactly flashy. please be courteous and do not judge someone unless you have been in their shoes. after all, he was on broadway (and i look forward to seeing him again), not you
@WaterEnjoyer31234 жыл бұрын
Sheesh! I like this rendition but some people don't and it's fair to criticise what people do and don't like about a performance even if you aren't an actor. I think you got the wrong idea of the song , it's supposed to show that he wants an extraordinary life. In the lines right before the song he says " I promise not to waste my life on commonplace ordinary pursuits, I'm going to live a life that's extraordinary!"
@padraigpantoja83874 жыл бұрын
@@WaterEnjoyer3123 but this song is about discovery and in the moments leading up to the song, pippin hasn’t fully adapted to the stage yet. he’s making discoveries as he goes on and that’s why the acting progressively gets better throughout the show.
@hstaff333610 ай бұрын
It’s not just a nice touch of raspiness; we get to see some real contrast between raspiness and absolute and utter Broadway clarity, which I’ve personally never heard before in ANY song. In the soundtrack, he’s mostly clear, which is why this sounded so astounding to me.

Everything has its season Everything has its time Show me a reason and I'll soon show you a rhyme Cats fit on the windowsill Children fit in the snow Why do I feel I don't fit in anywhere I go? Rivers belong where they can ramble Eagles belong where they can fly I've got to be where my spirit can run free Got to find my corner of the sky Every man has his daydreams Every man has his goal People like the way dreams have Of sticking to the soul Thunderclouds have their lightning Nightingales have their song And don't you see I want my life to be Something more than long.... Rivers belong where they can ramble Eagles belong where they can fly I've got to be where my spirit can run free Got to find my corner of the sky So many men seem destined To settle for something small But I won't rest until I know I'll have it all So don't ask where I'm going Just listen when I'm gone And far away you'll hear me singing Softly to the dawn: Rivers belong where they can ramble Eagles belong where they can fly I've got to be where my spirit can run free Got to find my corner of the sky

i personally like the little charm matthew james thompson brings to the role... but i cannot deny he his behind the beat and i can see why the raspiness of his voice makes him appear lackluster compared to the talents of his fellow cast members.. so honest question, does anyone have some input as to why they think he was chosen to play pippin? just curious.
@jacobsilver58448 жыл бұрын
where he's behind the beat is undoubtedly an artistic choice to give the song a contemplative feel. The music charges along behind him while he gradually comes around to expressing his feeling. When it's important for him to be directly in time with the music, it's completely seamless. It's clear from, for example, the several lines starting at 2:12 ("thunderclouds") that he knows precisely where the beat is, the way a good dancer always knows exactly where the ground is. You could make a valid criticism that he makes the choice too much, so long as you recognize that it is indeed a choice and not a failing of his rhythmic sense. The raspiness only comes through in his lower register, where he tends to be very conversational anyway. When needs to be a tenor, his voice is incredibly pure. Think 2:23 all the way until he goes back into "I've got to be," which is raspy again. The raspiness isn't exactly an artistic choice, but it suits my vision of a character full of youthful frustration and optimism.
@user-zi9tr1hp4r8 жыл бұрын
His raspiness might be due to a tired voice as well. It's hard to hit higher tenor notes at a Forte on a quick note.

It’s a musical they’re meant to do that
@sphenopalatineganglioneuralgia4 жыл бұрын
@@laurel222 ... what are you talking about? Because it's a musical, they're meant to sing in falsetto?? Um, you must not have much experience with musicals. You realize broadway musicals are one of the largest source of songs that are belt out at the top of your lungs, right? Which is the opposite of falsetto. This particular song is either written to be sung with falsetto on the last note (not sure, haven't seen the sheet music) or it's done by tradition (because everyone seems to sing this song that way), but I have heard one version (the most popular) where it's a stronger last note, and I think it really gives it more power at the end. I know it's preference, but mine is to not end a powerful song on a weak falsetto.
@laurel2224 жыл бұрын
@@sphenopalatineganglioneuralgia Whilst I can understand how you prefer powerful songs to have powerful endings, when I say ‘they’re meant to do that’ I mean, one of the feature of musicals is the wide range of vocals compared to usual songs which don’t explore such things so much.
