You know, if anybody has had good character development overtime besides Naofumi, it's the Blacksmith here. He didn't like the Shield Hero at first, but then he met Naofumi. He didn't trust demi-humans at first, and then he met Raphtalia. Now he treats them as equals and with respect. He's a bit underlooked, especially given certain things about him like his level.

Let's just Say that when he finds out, It is one of the best scene and the founding of their relationship.

That's not why he wasn't seeing her as a woman. It was because of how jaded and closed off to what was around him at the time that he still only saw her as child he purchased. After she restored some of his faith in humanity the next episode he started seeing her as an adult.
