I've heard of people just using a hose with a small fuel filter on the end like the kind you would use on a lawn mower. Don't do this because the fuel filter actually traps moisture inside the diff and doesn't allow it to escape causing the oil to turn mud brown and break down.

Can you do a Jb 74 diff breather installation with the correct fittings ? Especially transfer / gearbox case.

Is the fitting the same legth/depth/reach as factory?

Got one those kits here ready to install on my 80 series! The factory breathers are garbage and when they get full of oil/mud/etc. they don't work at all. Just replaced the rear diff along with the axle and hub seals, and re-greasing all the bearings, so I want the rear axle to have as much protection from water ingress as possible. Craig.

Will your hose get brittle and crack?

putting an inline gas fuel filter on the end might also work well

Do you put loctite or teflon tape on threads?

If those blue caps are filters, why would you be putting them on with greasy hands? A must have product though for 4wding.

Can you explain please, if these breathers have a one-way valve, how can they possibly suck in water? Thank you for your time. Regards, Keith.

I would be more worried about the vent getting clogged up and not being able to let air and moisture out. These should help prevent against the vent clogging.

I did find this tidbit of info which makes sense also: The shortfall with the factory breathers is that driving through water crossings creates a vacuum caused by the drivetrain assembly being cooled rapidly by the water. This vacuum will tightly close the valve shut causing air to be instantly drawn into the assembly through the seals. Many times the seals are still submerged below water, leading to the water being drawn into the drivetrain. This will contaminate the oil and possibly damage drivetrain components or your Air Locker.

Sucks water in passed the seals in the diff by pressures in side the diff

Why do you need to put them higher? They have a one way valve, no water can get in???
@ballajustin4 жыл бұрын
Standard breathers that come from factory aren't 1 way valves as the air that leaves has to be replaced somehow else you will end up with a vacuum in your diff

So if the bonnet would be completely be under water, those blue thingies would not let water in the lines? Thanks Jan

Found it interesting that you don't have the proper tool for crimping the hose clamps

Hi how is it that oil does not pass out of the breather , and only air ! many thanks

Great idea, poorly executed. Those aren’t breathers, they’re pneumatic silencers for compressed air systems. That said, they will still allow contamination to ingress, and anyone who truly knows about maintenance wouldn’t contaminate a “filter” with dirty oily hands!? That just creates a magnet for more dirt. If your serious about filter breakers, look at products from a company called DesCase, they make a true filter breather that prevents ingression of moisture and dirt.

Home depot heavy duty rubber hoses + clamps + spong filters = easy and cheap cheap. No need for a kit ever.

Thanos Go for it...it's your car. I'd rather have the dry filter breathers....my car, my choice...your car, your choice:pay for your choice later with moisture breaking diff and transmission down causing damage. How much does a transmission and 3 diffs cost?
