Also here is a simplified overview of pirate types: Pirates Regular Pirates are total outlaws that attack merchant and non merchant ships indiscriminately, they prey upon all without distinction of nations, religions and affiliations. Privateers Privateers are state sanctioned sea robbers. Governments commissioned them to attack and seize enemy nations merchant ships during war. Corsairs Corsairs might be state sanctioned or might not be state sanctioned. Regardless Corsairs attack merchant and non-merchant vessels based on religious and ideological differences. Buccaneers Buccaneers are state allowed sea robbers operating both in and outside war times. One or several states allow them to attack all kind of vessels of an opposing state or states. Sell Sails Sell Sails are mercenary seamen that operate outside any government and ply their trade to whomever can pay them, they can function as escorts, merchants, privateers or private marina.

A corsair comes from the French "Corsaire", and where State-sponsored pirates. They would raid enemy ships under a disguised banner, but would still be technically under the King's services

If not for you guys, I would have lost interest in the world of ASOIAF, everytime I'm about to lose interest because of the poor ending of the show or by GRRMs lack of interest in finishing the book series, you guys release a new video throwing light on previous topics from a different angle which piques my interest. I really like theory videos that add more than just talking about stuff straight from the pages. By chance have you checked out the Dunk and Egg novellas? The Audible " Knight of the 7 Kingdoms" is read by the guy who plays Visarys on Game and he does AMAZING

I guess the major difference between the iron born and other pirates is the practice of slavery. Thralldom is definitely slavery, but they don't sell thralls, and children of thralls are born free. This is a point of contention between Rodrick the reader and Euron in the books. Though I suppose slavery with a different name is still slavery. Slavery is a major theme in the books and I like that this thralldom is explored, and serfdom too. The justification for slavery and the marketing of the relative difference between the various kinds of slavery is an interesting concept that I feel gurm does a good job exploring.

I think he does a great job exploring it. I remember in a Tyrion chapter in Dance of Dragons, he talks to Penny when they were slaves to the big fat guy (sorry I forgot his name), and he says something along the lines of how they were being treated better than a vast majority of other slaves. And it got him thinking about how similar slaves in Essos are to servants in Westeros. They both have a lord, are forced to do what they're told or they'll be punished, make next to no money, and are treated terribly or decent enough depending on who their lord is. So they're basically the same, just Westerosi have a teeny tiny bit more freedom, but the parallels are really cool

@@Jake-gp1ik I agree. I sometimes wonder if he's asking us to keep our eyes open to our world and look for versions of slavery that we might call another name. Debt slavery is a popular one in western society. But in parts of the world you have more insidious versions of debt bondage, where workers (if I recall correctly a majority are from Bangladesh, India, etc) are tricked into immigrating for work. "The company" will cover the cost of the visa (usually around $10k USD) and they can "work it off." But the amount they earn and the amount they are forced to pay for lodgings and food, essentially make it impossible for the workers to ever pay off their visa debt. They prey on vulnerable people from poor regions, who will take any risk to earn money for their family to survive. We might call these things another name, but is it really that much different? I'm not sure. I love how I have come to look at the world through a different lens after reading asoiaf, and the supporting materials, a few times. GRRM might be called a literary activist, and that does seem to fit his nature. When filling his forms to withdraw from the draft for the Vietnam War as a conscientious objector, he submitted his short story "The Hero" with his application. I'll link the story, it's only about 9 pages long, but you can see how he uses fiction as allegory. Something to think about when reading his work, it's really interesting to ponder the extra meaning behind his words. Based on interviews and some of his written reflections, I do believe that's something that GRRM hopes people get out of his stories. The difference of a pirate an corsair is legality. Corsairs are the ones employed by governments, to attack there enemies. Pirates are the illegal ones who have no legal backing of anyone. An can't in be known as a pirate any where, without fear of being arrested.
