The most recent time I watched this movie, I think one of my biggest problems with it was that the East India Trading Company killed the Kraken off screen. Why in the name of Henry Phillip McCoy would they destroy the monster that could even further cement their hold on the sea? (I know the answer is so that the writers don't have to come up with a way for the protagonists to destroy it, in addition to Beckett). I get that they had the Dutchman, but that's like saying I have 2 super weapons, but I'm going to throw one away.

I feel like the round table scene is no more racist than suggesting that the British bad guys are obsessed with tea... sure they're stereotypes, but the film isn't saying that a French pirate wearing face powder and a curly wig is an inherently negative thing, and if you instead had a more progressive take where the Asian pirate lord is dressed in what we think of as normal pirate clothes or something then it wouldn't have made sense within the context of the time period or the overall tone of the film. If those stereotypes existed in history then it isn't racist just to include them, as long as its not exploitative... in my opinion at least!

See I didn't see the climax as Becket accepting defeat. I saw it as his being so unprepared for the very notion of losing that his mind breaks and he just wanders off (not far mind you, what w/ him being on a ship that's being blown up).

I may be the only one, but my favorite Pirates film is actually Dead Man's Chest, I think it's great to see them all go after one thing in common, and how everybody has a reason(s) to look for it. I also like the action variety but by far the best scene in the film is the sword fight between Will, Jack and the other guy in the mill.

So instead of having the Battle of Endor or the Battle of Helms Deep on the sea AND the fact that they built up most of the movie for the Brethren Court to gather all the pirates for them to only sit on the outskirts during the final battle is just a waste of potential. They mention you know, "Pirates movies are just good popcorn movies." That's the problem with at least the last 3 of this series and the Transformers movies. You know their are ways to make "good" "popcorn" movies. See Original Star Wars, Jaws, Raiders, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc.

I've been enjoying these Movie Talks and your in-depth analysis of the film's elements. However, Michael, I have one request: could you get guests who match you in terms of professionalism? It's jarring and somewhat frustrating to have you, who are very professional and have excellent insights and questions, paired with a guest who seems really unprepared and unprofessional. It's grating to have to get through giggles and "ums" and silly voices to get to your insights and exploration of the film's themes, which is really what we want to see.

I couldn't finish this past the 10 minute mark. This conversation with a lower I.Q. is so annoying to hear while I work. Clearly this is a person I would only talk to while drunk at a party or waiting at the post office and having nothing to do with my life but kill the boredom. Stumbling over miss-usage of grammar and conjugations just is hurting my brain.

There are definitely moments in Pirates 3 that are fun to watch. But for the most part it was a movie that dragged on for way too long and tried way too hard to be dark and complex. I would've loved to see you both discuss the first scene in the movie where they have a mass hanging that includes a child.

I'm probably in the .000000001% (times about one thousand more 0s), but this is also my favorite pirates film. I love the mythology of this series and this one and the second one really pick up on the worldy mythological aspect of the series. So yes, someone actually likes this film the best.

I actually enjoyed the first three almost equally. But they should have stopped there. They had a good ending point that would have left people wondering in a good way, rather than continuing the story because producers thought that Johnny Depp needed to be seen doing more Deppy/Sparrowy antics and Geoffrey Rush needed to be seen doing more Barbosa character hamming, and they needed to create a new villain that they could kill off at the end of the movie, and have a new sexy female co-star, and have mermaids, and a bunch of other dumb things that were completely unnecessary. I hope they quit while they are still making a meager profit...

The first was personally my favorite. But for what it's worth I certainly didn't hate 2 nor 3 as much as seemingly everybody else did. I still thought they were a good time and all. It almost seems like one of those things where a few really obsessive people decided they didn't like it, blew it out of proportion, and a ton of really bored people needed something to hate and just jumped on the bandwagon which then brought on everyone else who didn't want a tongue lashing from the hordes of media hate personnel..... Which seems to happen a lot, now that I stop to think about it. Anyway, I still like 3 as well (albeit it isn't my fave) and I do think it gets more flak than it deserves.

It comes across as distracting and makes me think taking a little more time to script a little (at least for your friends) might be well taken.

The biggest failure of this movie and the franchise was the hideously stupid story arc for Norrington. HE should have been the one to ultimately double cross Beckett and order the fleet to retreat. Why? Because there was no good reason presented, or assumed, that would turn that fleet back. And, Norrington was a Commodore so it would have been a great ending. Instead they went with the Star Wars ending. Which sucks. I love these movies but, they deserved better than to be given a Hollywood Ham Sandwich.

The ending was a total betrayal of Keira Knightly's character. She was motivated by not wanting to be reduced to baby-maker and wife, and that's what happens to her in the end -- she's alone with her son, she has NOTHING but motherhood, no life outside the child except for once every 10 years when she gets to be a wife, too. I hated the third film.

Yes, she's in love, but she's also her own person with her own life, that they have her sacrifice to be more of an appendage, less of an independent being, than she would have been in an arranged marriage. A healthy relationship is one where the partners balance their wants and needs -- this is a relationship where she gives up EVERYTHING for him while he gives up her (except for the very rare visit) to achieve his other wants and needs.

I never enjoyed the third one. I actually remember my brother and my mom took me to the opening weekend in 2007, I was a huge fan of the franchise (don't judge me I was really young). But even back then I knew the movie had lots of issues... I found At World's End so dull to the point I fell asleep halfway through the movie. I tried to watch it again in 2008 when my cousins came over my place for the weekend. I vividly remember that weekend, they brought 2 movies, National Treasure 2 and At World's End. Everytime we tried to watch them together I kept snoozing... so after countless failed attempts I managed to stay awake and watch them on my own. Aside from a couple of positives, I honestly didn't like the film, imo it took everything wrong with the first 2 and worsened it. Plus the cast was too freaking huge, a big positive of the original Pirates of the Caribbean was how small the cast was because it allowed the writers to make the characters more likeable. However, to the third movie's credit, it wasn't as bad as National Treasure 2. That movie was just awful and perhaps the main reason why I kept falling asleep when I tried to rewatch At World's End.

D.A.R.E. is sort of a, teach-kids-to-stay-off-drugs group. About six years ago when I was in elementary school, they'd send in an police officer once a week to teach all the classes about staying off drugs and whatnot

Lionet Soma Lord of the Rings was really one big movie, all shot at once, the entire thing. It's kind of an exception. Like it's more common for two movies shot back to back (Reloaded/Revolutions) than ALL 3 of them. In fact LotR is the only example I can think of along with its Prequels The Hobbit Trilogy.
