did they take out the scenes with James because they didn't want him to be seen as a good and honest character because dang man, he was a good and honest character
@TheWanderlustWolf4 жыл бұрын
I think it was less because they didn't want Norrington to be likeable and more because they didn't want to make Elizabeth outright UNlikeable. (I'd still love both regardless, but Elizabeth was already pushing some boundaries at the time and leaving these admittedly great scenes in wouldn't have done her any favors with critics.)
@BarrelsPolesandJack4 жыл бұрын
Probably. Even though he STILL gives that impression throughout the course of the film. They SHOULD have left that final scene in, for sure. Shows that Elizabeth DEFINITELY made the wrong choice.

Norrington did what he did to heed Jack Sparrow, not because he agreed to it, but because he loved Elizabeth more than he cared for a relatively fickle problem he has with pirates, especially such an ingenious one as Jack Sparrow. He did so many things out of love, and only because he often could not find a way to express such a love properly that's why he was caught out in so many situations. He's what every man should strive to be.

Norrington's face @ 4:59 is too precious and sweet. His smile, when she returned his earlier compliment, because he believes her... this is why they had to remove that scene. . Because it made Elizabeth look like a complete (deliberate deceptive) manipulative beyotch. Unneccessarily, too; given that this scene hints that Norrington would've rescued Will anyway (which is unlikely irl; it'd be a waste of the Crown's manpower and supplies for a 'nobody' citizen and an expense Norrington would be hard-pressed to justify when they returned, since Will's death would've harmed no one in Port Royale). . Whereas canon, left as is, only made it clear that she loved Will and accepted Norrington's proposal in exchange for Will's rescue, but Norrington recognized that, and ultimately put her feelings above his own and gave her a way out of their unofficial betrothal (which, note, she didn't herself break beforehand).

My favourite character in Pirates of the Caribbean no doubt will be Commodore James Norrington! He is a brave man. I liked what he contributed and the conflicts he had about his actions throughout the films. He certainly helped set up a lot of moments and he was an interesting character to keep up with. When he was killed, I cried a lot and to me he is a hero, yet he is the unluckiest in the whole series. His act of mercy has caused him to lose his job. The man he saved has took away his fiancée. His good deed only lead him to misfortune but still he fought on to redeem himself to be who he was again. He become a hero to me, a hero who would give up anything for his love, even if it meant to sacrifice his own life. I have been thinking if Jack and Barbossa can come back, why can’t James? Anyway, he is the bravest man I have ever known.

@hollandfray45212 жыл бұрын
That’s what unrequited love is, one sided. Elizabeth had loved Will since they were kids and it’s obvious he felt the same. Norrington probably hoped that once they were married she’d feel the same way about him he felt about her, but after he saw how far she was willing to go to save Will on multiple occasions he realized she’d never get over him. It isn’t unfair that James fell in love with her, but she didn’t; it happens all the time.

James had the suspicion she liked Will. He merely hoped she would end up liking him instead, and hoping for the love of someone you in return love is not stupidity. James proved her was not stupid when he let Elizabeth go to be with Will. James is not stupid, he's naive. He is a good man, whom I like, and will always post nice things about. It's better off he didn't get with Elizabeth, since she can't seem to choose Jack or Will, at times, and that leaves James for a woman who deserves him.

Always adored the dialogue used in these movies. To some they might have initially been seen as pirate movies for children and families based off of a rollercoaster but even something so simple (albeit essential) as the dialogue was always so good. It was so interesting, inventive and all around fun. Even just the above exchange with Jack and Norrington from the movie: Norrington: 'You will then spend the rest of the voyage contemplating all possible meanings the phrase: Silent as the grave. Do I make myself clear?' Jack: 'Inescapably clear'. The interactions are so full of well constructed wit that they really help the characters form a greater, more accessible identity. The best example of course is Jack who, while often seeming crazy, a daydreamer or an idiot, is clearly extremely intelligent and capable, a true chess master who uses a front of eccentricity (regardless of how natural it might be to him) to fool, leverage and generally outmanoeuvre his opponents and his long winded tangents and deliberate verbal dead ends are a perfect example of the power of the script of these movies.
